Update 1
Price dropped on this one! Now £549 from £599

A small form factor with a decent 1920x1200 Wide Viewing Angle screen. 2-in 1 so it can be used as a tablet as well.
CPU is a 12th gen i5, should be good for a nice few years. Comparing the prices at the moment for a 2in1 laptop, I think the specs for this price is good.
According to Crucial you can upgrade the RAM up to 64Gigs. We have 2 slots.
We worked together with dell to offer a better value for our community.

Would not recommend this specific model, after around a year the hinges on the laptop will start clicking leading it to eventually break, also cracking the screen. Unless you are buying years worth of warranty the repair cost will be very expensive.

Mine is 18 months old and out of warranty, bought direct from Dell. Right hand hinge came loose and screen cracked when closing the laptop. To their credit, web chatted Dell support - went straight in with multiple reports of broken hinges online and that they are liable for 6 years under Consumer Rights Act expecting a fight but they offered to collect it next day for a repair. No arguing, no need to threaten Court action.

Would buy Dell again but steer clear of fancy hinges.

8GB ram which can't be expanded is cold, especially on a £500+ laptop.

On this one the RAM can be upgraded to 32 according to Crucial. Many other models have onboard RAM and the RAM if fix on those.

I picked up my current Ideapad laptop with very similar specs for about this price second hand. I'd say this is a really good price for these specs considering it's new, especially since RAM is upgradeable. Hopefully the SSD is too because 256 is weeny.

Downsides for me would be the weight and the lack of any kind of biometric login. (edited)

Damn - just recently bought a laptop - would have been all over this otherwise. I had an old gen version of this and access the HDD, battery and RAM were super simple.

Is this a good price for a laptop (don't necessarily need the tablet function). Looking for a laptop for my Son's birthday, to be used for college over the next 2 years (and hopefully beyond).

Budget is £500, but can stretch to £600. (edited)

If you are 100% sure he won't need the tablet-touchscreen function, then 100% you can buy a faster one at a lower price with 16GB ram, I believe.

I got this model only with an 1135G7 CPU for £411 from the Dell outlet a few weeks ago, which I thought was a great buy. It turned out to have a charging fault where it wouldn't charge properly from the charging port (but would from the USB-C). Dell offered a refund or a replacement with a brand new 16" 2-in-1, with the newer 1235U CPU, better quality screen (the 16" is 300 nits), bigger SSD and an active pen. I accepted the offer... The invoice price in the documentation was over £900, so for my £411 outlay I'm more than happy with the Dell service.

I also owned the old 13" 2-in-1 which served me well for 4 years, easy to upgrade the SSD and memory, as the new ones are. I even replaced the screen myself after I dropped it on morning 1 of lockdown! (edited)

It has been confirmed by Dell as well. The RAM is good to go up to 32 Gig. 16+16

Other differences for comparison between this model and some others at this price - and not mentioned in the specs above - are that it charges via USB-C (comes with a 65W USB-C charger) and has an aluminium casing, which feels very nice and sturdy compared to plastic models. For better or worse, the screen is the glossy Trulife type (being a touchscreen) as far as I can tell the other Dells around this price are antiglare (AG). Screen is 250 nits. Fingerprint reader in the power button doesn't seem to be indicated in the specs, though the one I had from the outlet did. I can imagine some other models have a better battery than the 3-cell one on this.

Can someone please answer: If I upgraded the RAM on this to 16gb, would that void the warranty? And is the SSD upgradable?

100% not. Wouldn't make sense (unless you physically damage something inside). This is my opinion on this.
