A ridiculously low price for an entry level NUC. Just add RAM (2x 8GB for £30quid would suffice) and a 256GB M.2 SSD for another £20 and you've got a nice media pc for about £220

2 Cores is very limiting in these days for media pc. Need at-least 4-6 Cores

this can still easily run 4K films locally or streamed

Can also do 4K120Hz HDR (4.2.0) over USB C in DP mode as it supports DP 1.4 - you just need to buy that Cable Matters USB C to HDMI 2.1 adapter (albeit you won't get full HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and 10 bit 4.4.4 chroma) (edited)

any of these NUCs come with USB C power DC? or is minisforum the only good ones offering this? very handy for monitors that support typeC output. gets rid of one less plug.

There are quite a few mini PCs that come with Type-C power port, mostly N5105. Unfortunately they require 12V power supply instead of USB 5V, so you have to use a dedicated power adapter anyway.

On the other hand, a lot of monitor Type-C port only supports 5V 2A power out, which is only good for Raspberry Pi. Even if the monitor supports Type-C PD, the PD protocol does not support 12V.

There is one potential solution to this. You can purchase a Type-C emulator adapter to power a normal mini PC including the Intel NUC. Like this one:

    amazon.co.uk/Cab…8-2

You can find either 12V or 20V version. Then you can use the Type-C PD of your monitor to power a mini PC. Bear in mind that NUC is more power hungry than other N5105 mini PCs, so you may need to apply a custom TDP limit in BIOS to avoid any instability.

Anyone know what the power consumption is like? I want something to power a monitor to watch CCTV on preferably as low power in watts as possible as it will be on 24x7

I installed 2 x 8GB Crucial DDR4 2400MHz RAM and a 256GB PM981 NVMe SSD in it. When in standby, it consumes 6 watts, but it can consume up to 30 watts when running at maximum load.

I have an older version that I flashed a type of Kodi. The sound went and its now a piece of junk

I didn't realise I would get replies. the sound is there but very distorted. I haven't used the NuC in a few years and have since bought a firestick. much easier in my opinion (edited)

Awesome bit of kit these things - people trying to compare then to raspberry PI's are waaay off the mark here...

After an 11th or 12th gen i5 though for a gaming setup and been watching ebay just need the price to come down a bit

Im not sure about the i3's but the nuc bios has a setting to run it in performance mode which will increase power to the cpu
    BrokehDM's avatar

I totally get what you mean. i5 nuc are way too expensive. I ended up getting an i5-1135g7 Lenovo laptop linked with Thunderbolt 3 graphics card for gaming.

I wanted a media player forever, got a £40 obsolete Chromebook off HUKD, it does what I need to brilliantly. Literally playing media and outputting over hdmi is the only two things I need. The Chromebook is silent as fanless and does the job tremendously.

Still want one of these though!

Interesting, do you have PlexPass for hw transcoding? Or does i3 nuc8 manage without....including for 4k streams? Or perhaps multiple 1080p ones? Surely....it doesnt do remote access Plex as well? Ecucate me!

    (much appreciated

I've had a few of these, only dodgy chinese ones though. Still have one or two lower powered one, but was using one for a few years and it went pop whilst idling basically, never found out what was wrong with it, wouldn't turn on again but SSD and RAM were still OK. So then I decided to build a mini ITX PC instead as at least I can replace whatever part goes wrong then, it's a lot bigger though. This deal seems good though.

I'd recommend getting one of the HP prodesk i5 Gen 7's. Very capable machines and can be had relatively cheap.
We run 6 cameras at 2k resolution and it runs at 25% and 2gb ram with Blue iris 5.
Ours cost us £85 plus 1tb hd for £25

Yup I run 3 in my house with a main pc. I even use one as a server, 2tb storage that is basically my cloud. Built for only 60ish not including storage. The m700 is good but no HDR. So you'd want the m710 with 7th gen intel (edited)
