Apparently, you place it on the sand with the rod alongside it - with a couple of inches gap horizontally between them. This device is bigger than it may appear - the club is supposed to hit the sand in the round cut-out.
If the club hits the rod - you've probably hit the ball with the shaft/socket of the club and the ball could go anywhere. If the club hits the plastic furthest from the peg and ball - you are going too deep.
The "high quality plastic" appears to be polycarbonate.
I guess that the idea is that you spend a few hours in the kid's sandpit - swinging away and flattening the sand after each swing. Ball optional. It's presumably cheating to actually use one when playing someone - they might get a little miffed if you do so.
These seem to normally be a lot more expensive than this - so happy to vote for it. Happy to learn something new, so now when someone mentions having repeatedly shanked their ball in a sand-trap, I can be suitably sympathetic and ask after their hosel.
