    Would this be any good in the sea, or is it designed for calmer water?

    It depends on the skill of the kayaker and the stability of the kayak. You want a nice stable hull, like a v-shaped one, and this one looks quite flat. I'm no expert though. There's a review a guy did for this kayak below where he discusses stability. He is only on a canal though. Best advice I can give is, if in any doubt about your skill or your equipment, don't go on the sea.
