Since you need to buy the actual cable itself first to have any use of this and said cable has terrible reviews I’m not sure this is really a good deal

For slightly more, do yourself a favour and get the whole setup from Aliexpress.
Here is a link to the excellent 'USLION' cable that is available in different lengths
and fittings at less than £4 delivered:

    aliexpress.com/ite…pVE

As for the reason for getting a magnetic adapter:
    1) Keeps dust and crud out of USB port
    2) Allows instant connection for charging and data transfer - they just leap together
    3) Prevents damage to usb socket from over-use from pluging/unplugging cable
    4) Prevents damage to usb when cable is knocked, yanked or phone dropped, as it just disconnects
    5) Increases water resistance as it restricts moisture and water ingress
    6) USlion has a nice, muted blue light to easily find cable in dark room
    7) Get various adapters and you'll only need to have one type of cable to charge all devices

    P/s supports fast charging too!

In short, I love these and charge everything from my phones, to headphones, to laptops, to torches,
to tablets, to kindles, to USB power packs using them.

Aliexpress is like a bigger eBay - but only for trade sellers - so Amazon marketplace would probably be a better comparison. You can see feedback and look for total orders, to give you an idea of the trader. Delivery is normally 3-4 weeks. It's safe as your payment is held by Aliexpress and only released to the sellers when you confirm delivery. Things can be waaayyy cheaper (but you gotta factor in VAT now and delivery (if it's not included) so it pays to compare with eBay prices before ordering. I've been using Aliexpress for years and have (mostly) had a great experience, things normally work out quite a bit cheaper (this and Alibaba - bulk sales - are where a lot of eBay sellers buy from) and you get to buy cutting edge things, like electronic parts, before they have been picked up by local sellers. I normally have a few orders on the go, so the wait doesn't seem too bad because something is always turning up weekly .
Dip a toe in for something small, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised! (edited)

This is adapter for charging cable. Magnetic one for specific magnetic cable.
Magnetic cables are (in theory) safer then standard charging cables because you can keep adapter inside a charging port, avoiding dirt, dust or damage.
Tbh I never used it and I don't need it, my over 2 years old phone used daily at dusty environment is still fine.
Just don't use phone once is connected to charger and you can avoid charging port damage without any fancy cable.

Does it the new port invented by Apple?
    hcc27's avatar
Apple will be the last manufacturer to adopt the USB-C port in their phones, under potential legal sanction by the EU.

Can you fit these when you have a case on your phone?
    adams54's avatar
Probably depends on the case you're using, but I have two mobiles and a little ipod, all in cases, all with magnetic connections. Have been using this method of charging for years because it saves physical wear and tear on the charging socket.

How often does the phone charging port break before the phone though? I still have a 2007 phone with a working port but terrible battery
    Wibblefish's avatar
With kids devices pretty much always broke the socket before the device was obsolete, especially using things plugged in.

One of these (c-type) actually broke my phones port when I dropped my phone. I was on holiday and after that it was a nightmare to charge as a regular c-type would only work at an angle until I was able to get a new port fitted at home.
