Guaranteed you'll need tyres, brakes and shocks after this test, even if you don't...

Just adding my experience as people seem paranoid about the cheap price. Mines just passed with no advisories, great friendly service. All for £27.42,… bargain (edited)

Never, ever had an issue, but I am not naive when it comes to preparing a car for its MOT test. So these cheapo tests are probably not for the mechanically inept. If you are car savvy, and let the tester know not to quote for any repairs the car may require should it fail, then the chances of a dodgy fail are lessened. Anyway, at the end of the day, all MOT tester and testing stations need to keep thier licences, so makes no sense for them to continually shaft their customers. The bogus companies will soon be found out.In all my almost 50 years of dealing with the annual MOT lottery, I don't believe I have ever felt shafted. Not really sure what the answer is other than having a system like they have in N.I.. Where the centres are really independent

If I recall correctly Groupon take 50% up front leaving the business to pay the tax. (Was like this years ago when a business of mine dabbled with them). The MOT test centre received about £7-8 for their efforts. You'd be crazy not to try and recoup your losses on that.

I'd download the voucher now as I think this deal might get taken down soon. Just booked mine at this price but advised that as they've been taken over by Halfords the price will be going up to £35

Also check which branch you're speaking to if you ring the 0800 number. I'm equidistant between branches and didn't realise I'd been connected to a different branch to my preference. (edited)

Can I ask why? You don't have to get any work needed done by them.

    Ive tried Halfords,Kwikfit,ATS and National.
All found work that was not needed.
I now only use No pass No fee mot centres or the garage my mechanic uses.
As they will not find un needed work. (edited)

You could argue that they 'might' be tempted to let things pass that shouldn't.

Used Halford last year, passed no advisories. Worn front tyres noted verbally. And the MOT was free from a previous HUKD post. I'd not use this type of service if my car was a marginal pass and u were hoping the tester was a bit blind.

    A little story..

Back some time ago my mum got a half price MOT voucher sent to her for National Tyres and Autocare. I pleaded with her not to use it and pay the £10 extra to have it done with the service at her normal place. She went anyway.

When she came back I noticed her bumper and grill was covered in oil. Someone had taken the oil cap off and left it off meaning the cams flung oil all over the engine bay, bumper etc.

She said she remembered the guy saying something about the oil and I mentioned they shouldn't be touching the oil at all, she said she thought that and remembered having a bit of a disagreement with them at the time. (They obviously tried to find un needed work

In the end they had to pay something like £60/£70 to have the engine bay steamed cleaned! Can't believe they get away with this scam still.

Guess it depends on garage. (or maybe because mine was couple weeks ago and). I didn't mention voucher until I collected car. Showed them voucher and the guy typed in the code which reduce the price.

    £35 not bad anyway though.

At least you have to got in and get an mot, In the old days £35 and a phone call got an mot. So ive heard.
If Mot stations make up work they dont get punished by VOSA.
If they pass a vehicle with defects, they can loose their Licence.

I took my car into a Peuget main dealer last year for its MOT.
They passed it, even though the washers did not reach/ spray screenwash on the screen.
Main dealers doing dodgy mot's. (edited)

£25 at Mr Tyre . Is the second year when I use them and they've been gentle with my wallet until now although my car is 15 years old.

I had a bad experience with a Groupon deal for half price MOT, where the garage claimed a headlight bulb needed to be changed when it was fine prior to sending the car for MOT. That bulb cost me £10 and most likely didn’t even change my bulb. I have been going to National Tyres for MOTs with my two cars which are between 5-10 yrs and had passed without any work needed every time. I think it all depends on the garage you take your cars to. I think if the garage is very busy and can’t fit new cars for urgent work, then the workers won’t bother since it is not their own business and they won’t want to do more work for the same wages. Whereas if it is a private garage, any work done means more income!

Really want to try that, sadly the one in my city don’t do MOT, sigh.

Took my car to National with a steering knocking problem and was advised it was a problem that was beyond repair and that the car should be scrapped.

Took it to a professional garage/mechanic who diagnosed that it needed new rear brakes - £120.

Previous experience with Halfords: they broke the fuel injector when changing spark plugs - seriously.

Kwik Fit: £170 for unnecessary top mount replacement.

My wallet has been traumatised by "deals" like this and I wouldn't trust these chain centres to change a tyre without buckling the wheel.

Mine was last week. Apparently they're having Halfords systems etc and they said the discount code for the coupon was no longer on the system when checking out.
