The only real way to play the game as intended is on PS1. Either real hardware, or via emulation. DuckStation is a very user friendly modern choice for most users. It can be configured to be as accurate as one chooses, but defaults are good, too.

The PC port, even with a few recent fixes, has always been rather shoddy. I can't recommend it, and I've played this port multiple times along with the PS1 original.

Yeah, Duckstation emulating PS1 is a better way to play on PC. This is a poor port.

The best interactive game ever, was blown away by how the controllers vibration and reading your memory card was used in the story. (edited)

We're not tools of the government-or anyone else! Fighting was the only. The only thing I was good for. But qt least I always fought for what I believed in. Farewell Snake.

Ended up refunding this version. Has some issues that make it sub par technically even to the PS1.
    Spark's avatar
Believe it or not, that was intentional. The studio responsible for the PC port originally improved it and Kojima forced them to change it back again. It was basically forbidden for the PC version to be better than the PS1 original.
  26. ZiggySTW's avatar
Anyone made it work on the deck? Litrus or heroic?
    FloptimusPrime's avatar
Probably easier emulating PS1 version tbh. Could maybe get this running through Heroic launcher?

Swear I have a copy that played on XP and win7 somewhere. I’ll try it on W11 later next week.

    Snake? Snaaake! (edited)

I remember getting completely stumped all weekend until back to school Monday to ask a friend what to do when he was saying check the box for the codec, wouldn't be so bad but i had the actual game not a pirate
    yemstar's avatar
I remember going days trying to figure this out. Someone had to tell me the same.

Remember having to swap the controller port to fight Psycho Mantis? (edited)

Would recommend checking out retroarch for emulating older titles like this. You can install it on just about any mainstream platform you can think of including Windows, MacOS, linux android, iOS, apple TV, Xbox series s/x/one etc, vita, PSP, PS2, PS3, PS4, switch, Wii, Wii U, GameCube, 3DS, 2DS, steamlink and many others.

A while back I played Crisis Core, a PSP game on my android phone as I never got to play it back in the day (PSP exclusive).

Got a clip to attach my phone to an xbox controller. Boosted the resolution of the game and it was a flawless experience. This was on a 2017 720p (xz1 compact) device. Keen to see how it looks on my new Sony 1 IV!

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Edit: forgot to say, you can emulate just about any console, from Amstrad to PS4. (edited)
    m.ad's avatar
I'm assuming that was using the DuckStation core... the standalone DuckStation is great, and you can up the resolution of PS1 games up to 4K and beyond.
