Update 5
500GB fruther reduced to £23.99

Upgrade to breathtaking NVMe speed

It's time to maximize your PC's potential with the 980. Whether you need a boost for gaming or a seamless workflow for heavy graphics, the 980 is the smart choice for outstanding SSD performance, and it's all backed by an NVMe1 interface and PCIe 3.0 technology.

Packed with Speed

The 980 solid state drive harnesses nearly all the speed advantages of PCIe 3.0 through HMB technology and dramatic NVMe efficiency. The DRAM-less design delivers exceptional value, achieving breakneck sequential read/write speeds up to 3,500/3,000 MB/s²³, over 6.2x the speed of SATA SSDs⁴

Maximum Performance with full power mode

Keep your internal SSD running at peak level for nonstop, consistent high performance with Full Power Mode. Switch it on through Samsung Magician software to always keep your SSD in active mode. Instantly jump right back to intensive work with huge files, graphic-heavy games, or even normal PC usage

Built to last

With up to 600 TBW⁵ and other features⁶, the 980 SSD comes with proven reliability.

Smart thermal solution

Embedded with Samsung's cutting-edge thermal control algorithm, the 980 SSD manages heat on its own to deliver durable and reliable performance. To minimise performance fluctuations in the long haul, Samsung's Dynamic Thermal Guard technology maintains the 980's temperature at optimal levels.

Reliable thermal control

High-performance SSDs usually require high-performance thermal control. To ensure stable performance, the 980 uses nickel coating to help manage the controller's heat level and a heat spreader label to deliver effective thermal control of the NAND chip.

¹ The NVM Express design mark is a registered with NVM Express, Inc.

² Performance may vary depending on the SSD’s firmware version, system and hardware configuration. Performance measurements are based on IOmeter 1.1.0. The write performances were measured with Intelligent TurboWrite technology activated. The sequential write performances after Intelligent TurboWrite region are: up to 250 MB/s(250GB), 500 MB/s(500GB) and 900 MB/s(1TB).

³ Test system configuration: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00GHz,DDR4 2133MHz 8GBx2 OS-Windows 10 Pro 64bit Asrock Z-170 Extreme7+

⁴ Results are based on a comparison with Samsung SATA SSDs.

⁵ TBW : Terabytes written

⁶ 5 years or TBW, whichever comes first. For more information on the 5 year safety, please find the enclosed statement in the package.

Not a spectacular price considering prices these days, not bad though.
It's a DRAM-less TLC NAND drive, nothing special.
Same price as the WD SN570 which is a similar drive -
    amazon.co.uk/WD_…-16

I'd still go with the cheaper Kioxia with DRAM over this (especially if using as an OS/apps drive) -
    amazon.co.uk/Kio…-11

If you really need the higher sequential speeds, this DRAM-less Lexar is cheaper than the 980 and the SN570 -
    amazon.co.uk/Lex…-19 (edited)

While that's all true, it's worth pointing out the 980 has a comparatively larger SLC cache than its peers like the SN570, which helps significantly with increasing the threshold at which sustained write speeds drop.

Is this compatible with a PS5 if I add a heatsink?

No you need a gen 4 ssd, the ssd in this deal is gen 3. (edited)

How does this compare to the Koixia EXCERIA 1TB?
    The.Fat.Cat's avatar
As above, if using it as your OS/apps drive the Kioxia is better.
For everything else, not much difference between them.

If your mix and matching a gen 4 os drive and this as a secondary, would the gen 4 run at a slower speed (like ram does) ? (edited)
    DaveRay's avatar
No, you can mix and match generations on the same board without sacrificing speed - RAM is a different beast because it's treated as a single contiguous blob of storage. Different SSD slots are likely to have separate lanes (or the gen 3 slots may not even use PCI at all).

I'd check your user manual and BIOS to confirm.

Decent real-life Gen3 if you don't need the fastest. Paid nearly £75 for this in 2021 and it was the lowest it had been then. Nothing but reliable for me, with 40TB writes on it.

Runs pretty cool too so I'd say it's a nice choice for an external enclosure. (edited)
    Zahs_Nhak's avatar
Could you recommend an external closure please?
  6. ColdDeals's avatar
Using this with an M.2 Encloser is life-saving. much cheaper than an External SSD

What enclosure would you recommend, please

Looking for a cheap 2tb m.2 for photo and 4k videos backup. Anyone recommend a cheap one?
    The.Fat.Cat's avatar
This is probably cheapest one that isn't a completely unkonwn brand (newer brand, but decent) -
    amazon.co.uk/fan…8-6

If you want to stick with a more well known name, there's this Lexar gen3 -
    amazon.co.uk/Lex…-16

If you want gen4 (though it isn't the fastest gen4 in the world) -
    amazon.co.uk/Int…-21

How well does it deal with 4k files? My current Crucial can't handle them at all, and stutters to the point of them being unusable.
    USERTEMP's avatar
This is likely not a SSD issue. Even a old style hard drive should have plenty of speed to play a pure 4K remix straight off a UHD.
  9. dcx_badass's avatar
Decent drive, paid £54 in March and had no issues with it since.

Thanks, ordered. Will go nice in my refurb Dell Precision.

Anyone know if this runs on amd Ryzen laptop, read somewhere, Ryzen CPUs with Samsung m.2 SSD have issues?
    gnsks's avatar
    Ryzen Legion here, no issues.
  13. Miguel_Viana's avatar
Which one is a better deal this or a Crucial P3 Plus Gen4 for £42?
    thelagmonster's avatar
This - the P3 uses lower quality QLC NAND, whereas this should be superior TLC.

Unless of course this has become another drive that manufacturers are changing the NAND flash on under the table.

Currently have a Crucial P2 1TB in my pc build, was thinking of getting this and cloning it to boot the OS, but seeing some people say an SSD with DRAM (but slower write speeds) would be better? Would using this Samsung for OS not yield much/any benefit? would I notice a big diff with something with DRAM?
    The.Fat.Cat's avatar
The P2 wasn't a great drive even back then, slows down a lot when nearly full.
The Kioxia would be the quickest out of the ones mentioned above for the OS and it's less that this 980 too.
  15. scotinthecity's avatar
Not sure if it's this but since I installed this I've been having major issues booting from sleep. Buyer beware.

Also keep in mind this ssd runs hot (edited)
    deleted9453's avatar
Mine is sitting at 36c, all +-1c to the other mechanical drives in the system.

Hi, bit of advice please? If I build a little home server that will be on 24x7 but not used intensively (no db, but could be windows or linux) - would this SSD be ok for the OS drive? Or should I be looking at something else?
    All thoughts and advice appreciated!🙏🏼
    TIA 🏼
    USERTEMP's avatar
I would expect it to be fine. I have had much worse SATA ssds running server OS without issues for years.

What is it that you've done so far?
Did you go into the windows Disk Management settings?
  21. mohsin_nazir's avatar
After cloning its not recognising by hp 14. Note book. Cannot select this in bios as still showing old harddrive. Changed legacy settings still no luck. Tried to boot manually still no luck.
Am not sure what to do
    driver8's avatar
    Oh I see, yes... Tricky!
Thankfully, I had a spare socket for a second NVMIe drive, so I didn't have to do this.
Did you clone by using Macrium?
Maybe is prowling around and can advise? (edited)
