Not a scam but a cost sunk fallacy project with perpetual scope creep. When SQ42 drops, depending on how well it does, that may decide SC's future.

This pre-game (alpha) runs like dog poop for me most of the time, despite the constant PC hardware upgrades since back in 2014. Don't get me wrong, I get 100~fps, but it stutters/fluctuates like crazy, especially when near cities or any A.I. Of course it runs smooth in space.

This game can offer an experience that no other game can currently offer, if the servers are not borking.

Here's my tip if you are interested: try the free-flight and if you like it, buy the base package and do NOT spend any more beyond that unless you are down for some blind faith. You do not need to buy anything beyond that. A lot of folk have fallen for the trap of a $10 upgrade here, a $30 upgrade there. This then results folk spending more than they probably initially anticipated.

It's still being developed but my desire for it has diminished greatly.

Wise words indeed, i would also advise giving the concept 6 months before you spend beyond a Starter Package. If your are a gamer that is willing to put in the time, use the FREE FLY event to accrue some aUEC and buy either a ''Vulture (Salvage), Prospector (Mining), Fighter, Cargo Hauler''. Stay away from CCU's or spending any more real money, as CCU's lock away potential Instore Credit, and set you on a path for continual spending Real Money.
After 6 months, and if your still playing and enjoying the concept, you'll have a more focused idea of the path you want to take.
Easier said than done of course. (edited)

Ponzi scheme that will forever be in alpha.
    kaisersolo's avatar
Er incorrect, if you going to use words make sure you get the right ones.

    Ponzi scheme - Wikipedia

"A Ponzi scheme is a form of fraud that lures investors and pays profits to earlier investors with funds from more recent investors. "

I backed the game since launch and I have not received any monies. lol

Who can tell, although Cloud Imperium are a business worth in access of $550 million, its development although slow, shows no sign of slowing down, the company is expanding annually, and has healthy sales.
Star Citizen is very much playable and diverse in gameplay, its early access (Alpha Concept) which is 9+ yrs and counting. For those that have the PC Hardware to play the concept, its far from VAPORWARE.
    Its here and playable.

Why would I invest time let alone money into something that has no guarantee of providing a finished product?
  9. Auric_Goldfinger's avatar
Correct me if im wrong but between Starfield and No Mans Sky this seems to be a diminishing prospect...?
    Helisexual_'s avatar
They aren't MMOs/multiplayer and Starfield has loading screens when going to, or leaving a planet.

    Same genres, different games.

Ah the old fund raiser free to play weekend.

incredible that this scam is still going
  11. WeeCupOfTea's avatar
This “game” is pretty much a scam. They have no intention of coming out of alpha, why would they? They spend their time creating ships to sell to new players and whales whilst the game is still, after all this time, broken and unplayable. Do not give them any more money (edited)
    Kazloav's avatar

Well nobody forces anyone to buy into Star Citizen, what i have observed is, a large majority of those calling Star Citizen a Scam have never played it, or haven't the hardware, nor the disposable income. You can invest as little as: £41.31 for the ''AURORA MR FOUNDATION FESTIVAL STARTER PACK Package'', and never have to spend another penny.

This is the No Man Sky debacle all over again. Don’t waste your money on it, especially since it has in game purchases, which makes it even more dangerous than NMS
    mcav's avatar
This is nothing like NMS. Sean Murray and Hello Games released No Man's Sky and turned it from a disaster into *the* standard bearer for this genre. It has had sequel-worthy updates many times over, not to mention full generational updates, all for free.

People need little excuse to spend money, it depends on what your paying for and what your buying. The one big difference with spending money in Star Citizen, is its microtransactions and Pre- Orders, and these Pre-Orders are termed ''Concepts''. There are still quite a few concepts that were sold in the very early years of Star Citizen that still have not been developed beyond concept art. If anyone needs a reality check, just browse this page to gauge CIG's development hell:

Banu Merchantman - Alien Ships - Star Citizen Base
Common sense, patience and a good basic understanding of the financial mechanics and the multi faceted . aspect that is Star Citizen, otherwise you'll just flounder. Its not a game most people spend large amounts of time in, unless they are willing to use the tools that are easily available to really take advantage of whats on offer. One such individual, along with her org/crew play Star Citizen to its current full potential:

NEW Crusader Security Missions - Public Enemy Bounties - Star Citizen 3.18 PTU FPS Wreck Site Combat - YouTube

Star Citizen and Squadron 42 have so much potential, but Chris Roberts has definitely mismanaged the project. I lost interest when they hired that terrible studio, Illfonic, to make the FPS module, that had to be scrapped because Illfonic made everything the wrong dimensions. It sucks for the 600+ people they have working on the game that they're constantly made to rework or redo entire sections of the game or engine because Chris Roberts wants the newest tech in, or is only 99.9% happy with the result.

With Squadron 42 removed from purchase for the last few months, the general consensus is that they're going to share a release date and price increase at Citizencon this year.
    Gkains's avatar
    The wrong dimensions!
Maybe they're were trying to take realism beyond silly by trying to replace Lockheed Martin's approach to "engineering":
    en.m.wikipedia.org/wik…ter
Unbelievable that any "engineer" would ever use imperial measurements, but there you go!
  20. Icedream's avatar
Tried it, refunded it. Considering the state of the game it would have been way more friendly retaining items/quests on death/disconnection. My ship randomly blew up just leaving the hanger for no reason in the tutorial, and I had multiple issues of dying / losing quest progress. Just got really frustrating fast.
  21. Bazallworks's avatar
I'm gonna go slightly against the grain here and say that I do see the possibility of the scope creep winding down towards making a final product but only when the whales stop funding the game and the Devs realise they have to make money the normal way i.e. by making a video game and selling the video game.

Looking forward to that in 2055
  22. slybunda's avatar
not surprised considering starfield will out do this in every way so they may as well make it free to get any players.

The game development its the most interesting bit about this game.

My lad paid 45 quid for this and said its shockingly loose as a game wished he hadn't bothered.

One to AVOID until it's finished as expect your money to go to waste. (edited)

I tried it - It took an age to download game. Then when I ran it, it said "easy anti cheat" wasn't working for some reason. Spent hours looking up this issue. Eventually found I had to navigate to a folder and delete the easy anti cheat stuff, then re verify files.

Then ran it again. easily 10 mins before the game actually boots up.
Get to character creation screen, which is really nice and got me excited to play.
After creating a character, I again wait an age for anything to load.
When it does finally load, It looks beautiful, but frame rates are literally all over the place, for me from 75 to 0. It was unplayable.

Reading in forums explain that the game runs very poorly unless installed on an SSD (mine was on HDD), and that you probably could do with at least 32GB Ram.

Decided to uninstall. No simple uninstall buttons here. Could uninstall the launcher from control panel, but then had to navigate to files all over my PC to remove the nearly 100GB of stuff it left behind.

Can't say it isn't fun - it looks amazing. But my experience was not much fun at all.

    Star Citizen Recommended Requirements
    • Target Quality – High Preset: 1080p 60 fps
    • OS – Windows 10 64-bit v.1803 or higher
    • Processor (CPU) – Intel Core i7-9700K / AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or better
    • Memory (RAM) – 16+ GB (preferably 24-32 GB)
    • Graphics (GPU) – NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 / AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or better
    • DX (Version) – DirectX 11
    • Storage – 65 GB, SSD

    1. Well for what its worth, whenever their is a FREE FLY there tends to be server issues.
    2. Always install to an SSD, that goes for the OS/Games/Applications....everything really, its 2023, SSD's are
dirt cheap. If your not using an SSD in 2023, you should not be PC Gaming PERIOD.
    3. Your PC needs to be setup and optimized for gaming, especially for gaming.
    4. Flight Sims/Space Sims should not be compared to most other gaming genrer's, 30fps in flight sims can give smooth performance and is very playable, your ''75 to 0'' tells me a lot about your situation.

    5. The issue with ''"easy anti cheat" is easily resolved:

''Delete the EAC folder located in the Roberts Space Industries'' folder. Fully close the RSI Launcher. Use the task bar and/or the task manager to ensure the process is killed if need be. Re-open the RSI Launcher Click the SETTINGS option Press the VERIFY button next to "Analyze game files". Allow this process to finish''.

Apart from the odd issues server side, a lot can be done player side to give the best experience in Star Citizen.

    Good post by the way.

I ploughed my money into Star Citizen years ago, i can now buy any 'ship/vehicle/paints' in the sales, special events, up to a certain 3 figure price, and they literally cost me nothing, not a penny. I don't spend any real money in Star Citizen ever. There are differing ways to back the Concept, buy:
    1. (Starter Package) and leave it at that.
    2. Decide to invest small amounts beyond the SP, until you have a more flexible base to play from.
    3. Decide to stay for the long haul, CIG's development is snails pace, and invest to CONCIERGE level $900, you will have certain benefits, including: Not needing a game package to play, 2 Buy Back Tokens instead of just one, additional package options only offered to Concierge, access to the PTU (test builds) and more.

But there are possible hundreds of Early Access games, and you should always read the EULA before investing in any software, ''informed choice'' makes the decision simpler.
