Windows 11 users proceed with caution - there is a current firmware bug with this drive and Windows 11 version 22H2 causing a BSOD/freezes. In some instances users who force installed Micron drivers seemed to fix it but WD are aware and an updated firmware is in the works!

oh jeez, thanks for the heads up, I was avoiding samsung because that had firmware issues

Purchased this from Western Digital in Nov for £159.99 with TCB which did track, great price!

Would this be best installed as the main OS drive, or because of that game drive feature (is that direct storage?!?) it's best to be the one that holds your games?

You can always partition the drive and have the best of both worlds e.g. 0.5TB for OS drive, 1.5TB for games drive (or smaller/larger split depending on how big you need your OS drive). I do this all the time to keep OS drive relatively small so I can regularly create a quick backup image of Windows/apps in case anything goes seriously wrong!

Also, DirectStorage for PC games won't be a thing for a while and it's not clear yet which hardware will give the best (or most cost effective) performance. This is a good video of a first look at DirectStorage:

How does this compare to the Samsung 980 Pro 2Tb that's for sale currently from amazon for £163 in another deal posted earlier today, put you can claim £40 cashback, so that price is £123 effective

Which is the better drive, or are there any pros and cons to either?

Sn850x is much newer and more comparable to the 990 pro than the 980 pro.

Can this copy a 100GB file at full speed or has it got a smaller cache system where is slows down? (edited)

Any point getting this if I’ll be installing this on a gen 3 motherboard? Also I’ll be installing this as a pcie expansion SSD As I already have a NVMe in my motherboard slot.
    Merlinnjs's avatar
Most users won't notice the difference especially on gen 3 tbh. If I was you I'd go for the SN770 which is still a great drive and I got my 2tb for under £115 a couple of months ago

Good deal. What would you people in the know recommend for game storage on a PC? I've read a people saying gen 3 is enough.

The cashback isnt tracking for me
    orangepants's avatar
I had to raise a missing cashback claim with TCB when I ordered just after Christmas, had it confirmed and paid within a fortnight.
  9. Maladog's avatar
Can take a few days to track, should never be on at them straight away this is what clogs up their customer service.

Does the firmware issue affect users installing this in a PS5 without access to a device to update firmware ?
    MasterCheese's avatar
No, afaik its only Win 11 22H2

Just bought it through topcashback, £149.99 with free delivery.
However, while the the cashback came through surprisingly fast, it was for amount of £7.27.
    This is to do with:
    - This merchant calculates cashback excluding VAT, delivery and any other charges.
asfound in T&Cs on vendors page in topcashback.
So totals £142.27 and still a great price.
    uF0n's avatar
Same for me, but it doesn't look right... the price is £125 + VAT, and delivery is free, therefore 8% cashback should be £10.
