Tesco Long Eaton - only 3 us there at opening, store had 20 in stock, we all took one and a few others wandered in and got them. Can't see them being there very long.

Voted hot, but I just can't get excited about this model. Even at this price. I just don't see the point of a console that cuts out quite a few games that aren't available digital. Plus digital prices tend to always be more expensive than physical and then you also miss out on the even cheaper second hand price of games, effectively half the price of digital and less after a few weeks. So is this really a saving over time?I dunno, taking into account the price of a controller on its own, it's obviously a great price, but I just don't get it. Maybe I'm just too old fashioned and I'm not ready for an all digital future 😔 (edited)

Am I the odd one out? Purchasing digital is crazy. Used games are so cheap to buy on disc, and will be cheaper still once the new console comes out next year.
Why limit yourself / lock yourself to a digital version where you are ransom to whatever price Microsoft sell your chosen game for? Crazy. You could end up losing all your saved money on the first game.

The long game of MS (and competitors) is to phase out all disk drive consoles.... and as fast as possible. There is much more money to be made in digital delivery. Firstly you can't sell a game on, with a chain of secondhand owners who might have paid more for it on an individual basis.

Secondly you don't have all the costs of production, distribution and third party retailers taking their cut. Thirdly you get more accurate point-of-sale data on folks who are stumping up the cash (rather than little Johny who is the main end user). The list goes on and on, with very few downsides for MS.

Also with the PS5 waiting in the wings, inevitably more powerful than Xbox One X, MS need to make a play to dominate this market. So stack em high, sell em cheap will need to be the philosophy going forward until their foothold is too large for Sony to topple. I doubt you've seen the last of these One S deals and I'd wager a bet that the PS5 will be similar...and the price might sursprise us.

    Tesco staff HATE this website.

I was in the Edinburgh Corstorphine branch once looking for a steam generating iron that had been listed here and I asked a member if staff. She went to ask her manager and, thinking I couldn't hear, started a rant at him 'he's been on that cheap deals website, all xxxing day people coming in looking for things we don't have'.

    Similar to this

Based on my previous experience id be worried aboutbeing in tesco at midnight, with no one else there, asking a member of staff to check the price on an Xbox at 12.00....then again at 12.01. And so on til they find me the next morning in the freezer with an Xbox controller stuck in my head.

See, I'm of the opposite opinion - non-digital content is actively *annoying* for me now. No video game cases or DVD/Blu-ray boxes taking up space on shelves. Faster load times. Not having to swap discs all the time, or worry about them getting damaged (especially if you have young kids). Plus the subscription model (e.g. gamepass) means that I can play and try out tons and tons of games for the same money. I mean, sure - I bought Prey when it was a year or so old for about a tenner. Played it, really enjoyed it - great. But now I'm done with it, and I might get a couple of quid for it if I tried to move it on, so it's just not worth the effort. But in the last month, I've played through Gears of War 5 and the Outer Worlds (which under normal circumstances I wouldn't have gone near for at least a year, yet), tried a bunch of other games out, and the monthly fee was less than a tenner because you can get deals on ultimate passes all the time. Three months for £16, at the moment, I believe.

You also need to consider it from the point of view of the publisher, the game studios, and the console owners too. With a subscription model like gamepass, it takes away risk on all sides. Why pump millions of pounds and years of effort into a game and take the risk that it tanks? That's crazy, but that's always been the model. One badly received game (e.g. Mass Effect 4) and you risk taking down the company. But with a subscription model instead? Well - risk averted. You've got a market shelling out for new and novel content, so you can even afford to take risks on new and interesting and *different* games that aren't franchises, too. And as for you as a user - how many times have you bought a game and thought 'this is crap'. You've just wasted £40-50 on a new release. That would have bought you, say 6 months of game pass. For example, I tried sea of thieves - played for a couple of hours, didn't get on with it at all, so deleted it from the console and tried something else. I've also tried other games that I perhaps wouldn't have bothered with - Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, for example, which was brilliant, or The Outer Worlds which I doubt I would have gone near but really enjoyed. Also, there's an argument that game prices have gone up due to the second-hand market - the publisher/creator get one sale, but it's passed around multiple people so the initial price is higher to deal with that. Without the 2nd hand market, there's a chance that the prices will naturally fall, plus you're actually supporting the creator/publisher directly with your purchase, too.

Are there downsides? Sure - you're limited to what's on offer (although as of yet I'm nowhere near playing all of the ones that look interesting and they keep on adding more) and yeah, some stuff won't be on there when you want to play it. But on the other hand, my kids have plenty of choices of their own on there (although all they seem to play is minecraft to me) and I still have a ton of free games I've built up from the Gold pass over the years. And yes, in this particular case I'd still go for the standard S with the drive as I use mine as a blu-ray player (actually, that was the main reason I bought one - gaming was a secondary thing at the time) and I personally prefer having the *option* of buying a disc. But on the whole, I prefer digital these days and it's where the future will go, so I do think that this is a pretty solid option if you couple it with a gamepass and/or hunt down digital game bargains online.

I personally own both the PS4 and Xbox and have Gamepass on the latter, which I barely use - either I own or have played the games I’m into, or what I’ve found recently, the Xbox exclusives just don’t do it for me anymore. The recent X019 event put me off sticking with the brand long term, can’t see myself picking up the Scarlett at this point. Sony for me have by far and away the better exclusive games, Xbox doesn’t come close. Everyone has their own preferences of course, but Gamepass is worthless if there’s nothing that you consider is worth playing. (edited)

I’m looking to buy one and would much prefer one without a disc drive. Don’t want boxes and boxes of games cluttering up the place. Would rather pay a bit extra and just be able to choose them from a menu. Appreciate not everyone happy to pay the extra but I am and it’s rubbish to suggest I’m the only one.

I’d never buy a game or movie on disc so would rather save the initial outlay and not buy a model with a disc drive.

Well said I’m exactly the same it’s a initial saving on the console then with in 3-5 digital games it’s more expensive than the disc version, I’ve been hoping this console flops as I imagine Microsoft released it as a test run see how well it does, there second attempt to kill off the second hand game market, first one was the first Xbox one with the “always on”
  32. junxs's avatar
On paper looks a good price, but the reality is it will end up costing a lot more when you consider you have to buy games at full price through the online market. In the long run it will end up costing much more because of that. Better to pay the extra £50 and get the disc version, then you can share games with friends and pick up bargains on used games.

Not only buying games, but also when it comes to selling them. You cant sell a digital game - so if you buy a game for £50 and don't like it, or are finished with it in a few days, you can't sell it on to get 75% of your money back. (edited)

Absolutely. I get that, totally. As RudeDawg pointed out, this is easily …Absolutely. I get that, totally. As RudeDawg pointed out, this is easily better than the Stadia for example. Don't get me wrong, I'm not totally against the machine, (although I was on its release, £10 cheaper than the disc version, ridiculous) it's just for not much more extra, you can have the best of both worlds. As a second machine or one for a kids room, this is good value. I have no problem this being a second machine, I just worry about a time this being pushed as the primary machine, the all digital age. Microsoft are really pushing for that, fortunately Sony have made it very clear that they aren't convinced yet. But once both jump on board, that'll be it. It's definitely coming, but the cost of digital media on console needs to get real before this should be allowed to happen. Way more expensive than the home PC versions, which usual have a lot more going for their versions too. But as stated, this drastically cheaper than its release price, BUT it is a Black Friday deal. Once that's over, I'm still to be convinced this model is worth a purchase over the disc model. But I do, honestly, understand why people are defending this console.I also need a new controller, and this is tempting just to stick in another room, so I see the points being made but once Black Friday is gone, I'm not so sure again.

I think the fact that other entertainment medium have already adopted streaming the natural progression will be for the gaming industry to follow.
Personally I don't support it but that's the future unfortunately.

The price of games are bound to drop once it's been fully adopted, they've got no excuse to charge Retail price when there's no middlemen. I think that's what MS is pushing, along with Gamepass and the fact that they'll be providing gamers with choices.

Personally i wouldn't go for Digital (I collect physical games) but i'm getting one for my son. (edited)
