Carpet tacks

Hi all,

I live in rented accommodation and one thing that’s been problematic is carpet tacks sticking out of the carpet on the stairs, mostly in the inner edges of the stairs.

I’ve lost numerous socks & tights to them and still continue to do so (just lost another new pair to them today). I’ve hammered them in more times than I can count and I’m at my wits end with it.

The carpet is quite worn but the landlord very likely won’t replace it any time soon as they’ve had other expensive repairs/ replacements to deal with.

I thought about trying to install a runner on top of the carpet but I feel like it would make the stairs more unsafe (they’re very steep as they are).

Can anyone suggest any ideas of how else I can deal with the carpet tacks?
