Earn 6% cashback (average) at some retailers with the TOTUM cashback prepaid card

The card costs £3.99 and pays 6% (on average) cashback at a range of retailers including Sainsbury's and Asda. You get the cashback added when you topup your (virtual) card. You have to have valid TOTUM membership.

Is this a decent alternative to Amex for cashback purposes?

Only free for the first year, then £2.99

The 6% is average rate. It would be great to see the actual individual rates before buying one. ode/spree/pluxee usually pay 2.5% for asda etc.

Interesting, do you have the full list of retailers by any chance? I can only see selected retailers on the sign up page.

It appears this card is only for students, though I could be wrong.

I would suggest you get the actual rates. 20% on Laura Ashley & 2% on asda makes an average of 11%. But how often would you benefit from that average?. This is similar to the Ode card.
Stick with gift cards, where there is no admin premium, or look into bank cards with cash back, such as Chase or Santander.
You need to recoup the £4 before you even start to come out on top, and at 2% with asda that's a £400 spend.
