Import duty

Hi bought a jewellery item from USA, it was £300. Don’t like it and seller has accepted a return. I have paid £75 in import duty. Will I get this back? If so what do I need to do? Will seller have to pay duty when receiving the item back? Many thanks

HMRC community discussion here. Basically, you will need to file a claim. As for the seller, there is no problem for them as long they can demonstrate that a previously exported item has now been imported. The CN23 form you attach to the parcel should include the details, assuming you use Royal Mail.

Bear in mind that if the cost you paid included any administrative fees, those will not be refunded. (edited)

And the rate of exchange has changed so you might get back less than you paid, in GBP.

You would be better of to sell the item in the UK. Claiming back import charges (VAT & Duty) is not always possible and you need quite a few forms.
