    Problems getting WD800JD SATA working

I bought this off ebay about 2 weeks ago and it arrived today. I can't get it working however.

If you only connect the power cable, you can hear it click a few times - but it won't boot the PC properly.

If you put a jumper in the 3rd thingy along, it'll still click but will be recognized in the BIOS - but as about 6gb lol....

If you connect both SATA and POWER then it won't spin at all.

    Help me please..... :-(

    anyone :-(

    What mobo do you have?

    Here are your jumper settings;

    http://support.wdc.com/images/kb/sata.gif

You should use default 2, are you powering it using a legacy cable?

Only thing I can think is that perhaps the motherboard doesn't support that drive? Or that the drive is faulty

Hi , i am not a computer whizz , but i have been studying it at college for the last 3 - 4 year
& by the sound of your problem , your hard drive is dead not good i know

Although i have heard that SATA Drives are harder to install than your normal IDE Drive , so you could look into the installing it properly before you decide what to do , im quite sure you will find that information on google.

But the reason i think it is dead, is because you shouldnt be hearing any noises at all , especially clicking.

    Anyways good luck

I've read about something similar on Experts Exchange (About the WD800), however as they are gay you have to pay to find out what the experts say.

    Damn them..

    Lol

    How are you powering it?

The connection on the left or the connection on the right

I've tried both the legacy and the SATA Power (Which is actually connected to a Molex anyway lol.) (Converter thing)

It looks as if your HDD is bust then but it may not be, Sata drives are quite funny

Try using it with no jumpers, powered by Sata.

Let me know if BIOS recognises that

VIA KT800... hmmm I have a via chipset, could that be why?

Did you try it with no jumpers

    Original Poster

    Yes.

Further inspection and its got the southbridge which on that thread everybody is reporting problems with!!! Ah... VT8237 damn you VIA you are all erm - they don't make motherboard chipsets any more do they..

Have a look in your BIOS and see if this setting is correct or even exists :

Please access "BIOS Setup" --> "Integrated Peripherals" --> "VIA OnChip IDE Device" to set "SATA Mode" to [IDE] and save the change.
Then check if the SATA HDD is detected after reboot.

I work at Computer Logic in Casper Wyoming and we are also having the same problem. We have two boards in question; an Asus A8V Deluxe and an Asus K8V-X. Both problems are related to WD800JD drives and VT8237. The first system we saw this problem with was using the A8V and we tried everything. Different drives, different cables, different motherboards, different BIOS revisions on the board; all to no avail. We ended up using the promise controller on that board instead in order to get the system out the door, but with the K8V-X we didn't have that option.

After reading this thread I see that this problem isn't limited to just us and it appears to have been going for a couple months now. In order to help, I come bearing model and serial numbers.

We don't like the prospect of replacing the drives we're selling with recertified drives as our names go out with these too, so we're hoping for some sort of fix from VIA or WD or both. I guess we shall see. In the mean time we're working with our distributor to find a suitable alternative for the time being.

sounds like it was either already dodgy before it was sent, or that it was damaged in transit
