Spend nectar points on gift cards

Does anyone know what the score is with redeeming nectar points on gift cards instore?

A couple of years ago I was able to spend my nectar points on some Currys gift cards, but when I tried to do the same today the till staff said this isn't possible anymore.

The nectar website / app is pretty vague and not giving a clear answer.
