wow that’s awful to here - considering these were £89 pre covid (according to trackers).
ive noticed a lot of scalpers buying equipment and trying to resell for stupid prices. Even these 30kg Argos weights seem to be on gumtree for £200. Don’t think anyone would be desperate enough to pay over the odds for opti equipment - hopefully these scalpers get stuck with all these kits with no way to sell it, like them toilet paper hoarders
The bar holders and catch bars are both quite raw looking on this so I think it will be neccessary to add some padding.
I'm now lucky enough to have a full home gym set up; 7ft barbell, about 270kg in cast iron weight plates, flat bench and now rack. It has taken 3 months to assemble and a lot of internet browsing, but I got there in the end.
I don't think gyms, as we knew them, will be fully operational for quite a while, so i think it is worth the investment. I imagine when they do open up it will be restricted numbers, you will have to book a time slot, only 1 person to a piece of equipment etc.
Totally agree that it will be quite some time before gyms go back to how they once were. I think quite a few will disappear as well as they are usually run on quite thin margins. The money I would have spent on gym fees has gone into getting my own kit so I wont be returning, I'm sure there are many others doing the same.
Safety is the main one I think. While this has safety arms you could still collapse backwards in such a way the bar crushed you if you were squatting, a power rack virtually eliminates that risk. Again from a safety pov you can't bolt this down so it could topple whereas you can typically bolt down a. Power rack, but we are talking about heavy weights at/beyond the stated capacity for the rack
You can also use additional attachments with a rack. Or even make your own, like a lat pull down, you can use a rack as a post for band work etc. They are a bit more flexible. But their main disadvantage is their height requirement. (edited)
not pretty but do the job. have tested £125kg so far and holds great. solid timber build. Midlands based.
I got one for £45 pre-C19 from Ebay.
Unless you feel you really need one now, IMO waiting a few months for the second hand market to normalise is a better way to get a real deal. If you feel you need one then it's a good bit of kit, but the market is too hyped up at the moment to call any deal on gym equipment "hot".
It was for my brother-in-law. I only have a photo of the rack in his kitchen, not the bench. The bench is basically a a slim and short table that is quite sturdy.
We made the stands individually so he can move them around and use them indoors or outdoors. They have wide bases because we wanted 0 chance of them toppling over. We used my squat rack to check the height for his squat and his bench and them sized it up here.
2x4 treated timber mostly. Took about 12 hours to build this and the bench because we took time to think through things and made it up as we went along.. Will give it a sand and external paint for longevity.
I'm just seeing people taking the mick where I am (Scotland, still locked down). In fact I wouldn't be surprised to see some of these on gumtree for 350+ in the next few days. My gumtree is full of argos 'opti' sets being sold at 4x face value.
There's the occasional bargain - but I replied to an advert yesterday 3 minutes after it had been posted and I had already missed out on the item (an Olympic bar with 150kg of bodymax weights for £100).
I think alot will do fine.
Alot of independents are alot more than Just a gym to some, my favourite gym had to close a year ago due to redevelopment in the area.
I moved to a flagship pure gym the same day it opened (same day my old one closed funnily enough) but it's not the same, the quality and the diversity of kit isn't the same.
I wish they had more freedom instead of their own catalogue. (edited)
Double bonus that it is adjustable so I can use my cheapo bar on it, and further delay spending out for a decent 7ft bar.
Massive thanks for posting OP! (edited)
That was a different world..
No these genuinely were available for around £75 quid before covid started. This article In the sun from February shows an identical rack by the brand hardcastle as £89.99 new - Those are currently selling for £250 on amazon.
Edit - here's the camelcamelcamel price history for this item on amazon its been £80-90 pretty consistently for the last 5 years.
I'm finding websites aren't showing prices on stuff that's not in stock, so it's hard to know what comparable items are priced as, so much is oos at the moment. I assume the rrp for this has always been £150, but it was usually available on a 'deal' at £80, £90 etc. (edited)
Absolutely.
My dad bought a 5 bed house in Aberdeen City centre for £40k in 1992ish when he was earning £17k a year. He still earns about £17k a year but his house is now 'worth' £320k. He nips my head everytime I see him about getting a better, larger, family home for my kids, I'll just jump into my Hukd time machine then Dad and travel to a time when houses were a decent price relative to wages.
Time will tell whether covid permanently changes the way gyms work, the number of people working out at home etc. I genuinely don't see new or second hand gym equipment prices dropping across the board this year.
That said there will always be the occasional seller with no idea what their item is worth today but as I said earlier I saw an ad like that on Sunday and even though I replied 3 minutes after it was listed I wasn't quick enough.
Agreed. I googled M1 rack for the dimensions and the shopping ads across my page were all £250-350 for this exact rack and a similar hardcastle rack
It's not great that this (or at least the hardcastle) could be bought for £75 in February, but at least I didn't pay £350. I think the manufacturers are going to try and keep the prices high, at least at the RRPs. I don't think many of us will be back to the gym 'normally' til next year now.

Also power racks can usually be customised with storage for plates, landmine, cable systems etc.
Simple racks like this can be moved without too much hassle, where as a power rack is a bit more static / difficult to move if you had to.
I don't think that many people will be selling any decent kit, just the cheap stuff like iron 1" plates 🤮.
I think some will even more their Olympic bars to their gyms
