Single board computer for emulating PS2?

hi,

I want to build an emulator console.
preferable a single board or something small.
I've seen the raspberry pi and some mini intel computers.

however, does anyone know if there is an inexpensive option to emulate PS2 as well?
I know the raspberry pi struggles with PS2.

there are some Ryzen mini pcs which cost around £400! which is out my budget.

your suggestions or input are much appreciated.

thank you

    PS2 can now be emulated on Android quite well so any reasonably high powered android box may be worth looking at. AetherSX2 is the new emulator. (edited)

    My memory is a bit vague as it's been a long time, but I seem to recall that at the time the best approach was to get a fat PS2 & a 'network card' interface that allowed you to put an IDE drive in it. In conjunction with a certain physical game disk & a very small capacity USB flash drive (perhaps 16MB!) it would boot a homebrew loader that allowed selection of ISO images on the hard disk. Apols for vagueness, but google will help.

    Edit: usual disclaimer about copyright, owning the physical media etc

    Edit2:This looks v. interesting....

    Personally I'd also go for the second hand PS2 and then the network adapter to install a hard drive. The above link to Ebay is a good example, however I would pay slightly more for a SATA version;

    ebay.co.uk/itm…685

    The extra £5 spent on the adapter will be saved by being able to buy a SATA drive instead of IDE.

    You will also likely need a HDMI adapter;

    ebay.co.uk/itm…742

    Again, not absolutely essential but for the sake of £4 it makes it easier to plug into a modern TV.

    And of course, you can then install emulators on the PS2 for earlier systems;

    The memory card option is a lot easier than it used to be, I can see them on Amazon Prime.

    If it's just for ps2 might as well get a ps2.

    Raspberry pi4 is awesome but for ps2 and dc and wii etc i use a pc with virtualmans retrobat. Problem is if you haven't already got a pc it will send you overbudget.

    I've very little knowledge on the ps2, i'd check out youtube. It may be that ps2 stuff has to be burnt to disk still in which case that causes you another issue.

    No real experience, but from what I can see the Raspberry Pie uses ARM chips - not Intel and that then causes problems for the PS2 emulators that are out there. So, the big question is which is more important - emulation of PS2 OR utilising a SBC? If the former,simply get a cheap old laptop, install say Ubuntu and PCSX2.
    I assume you have typed "linux ps2 emulator raspberry pi 4" or similar into a search engine.

    To emulate PS2 I think pcsx2 recommend a cpu with a single core performance of 2000 minimum to play at native resolution. And not all games will work properly.

    I have an i5 6500 with 8gb ram and it plays some PS2 games fine but you do get dips and stutters with a lot of the harder to run games. Although I don't know if I was using optimised settings so potentially could have got better performance.

    cpubenchmark.net/sin…tml

    That is the link to search for the single core performance of CPUs you're looking at.

    Also currently PS2 emulation doesn't make use of more then 2 cores (I think) so having 8 cores instead of 4 won't help, assuming the same single core performance.
