Cheapest deal on this to be fair, so I’ll vote hot, but realistically the 1TB should be this price

Really its personal preference i run an samsung evo 2tb but they are pricy buddy any ssd will work tho

I saw it mentioned that you could store games on normal external hard drive but you couldn't play Series S/X optimised games from an external drive. But you could transfer them from/to. Like how you can transfer PS5 games to external drive but they can only be played when you you transfer back to the internal drive. Saves on re-downloading games if that option is available.I also think I read something along the lines of Seagate have an deal with Microsoft for 2 years exclusively for the external hard drive, and once that's over which is soon apparently other manufacturers will be able to release alternatives. Anyone heard about that?

Yes you can you just have to move games back and fourth when wanting to play series s/x games.. games that are still awaiting x/s upgrade can be played off a hdd.. i personally use a 2tb external ssd and just transfer back and fourth when needed

I know that, if you put in an additional 1TB into the PlayStation now and in a couple of years you want to have extra storage you have to take out your 1TB and put in your 2tb which you then can’t use to run PS5 games. With Xbox you can hotswap the memory cards so you can essentially just add storage for games and swap them out or even take them to another console to play them.

No, you're mistaken here. The PS5 expansion port is for an expansion …No, you're mistaken here. The PS5 expansion port is for an expansion drive, just like Xbox. The stock storage on the PS5 does not get replaced, as again, just like on Xbox, it's soldered to the motherboard. The only difference is that on PS5, you need to get inside the PS5 to install it, whereas on Xbox, you can just plug it in from the outside. And on PC, you have multiple slots for storage. Many motherboards even have multiple M2 slots for more than one NVMe drive specifically, along with all the SATA ports for HDD's and SSD's. So no, there is basically no world in which these horrifically overpriced Xbox expansion drives will work out cheaper in the long run than PS5/PC where you can get faster drives for quite a bit less money. Maybe if y'all stop buying these and thinking they're a 'good deal', they'd be forced to drop their prices on them and it'd at least be closer?

2 main points, 1. PS5 has only one expansion port (internal is soldered to the board and cannot be removed) if you add for example 1TB of additional storage and want to eventually up that to 2TB you would have to replace your 1TB of extra storage for a new 2TB NVME module, with Xbox you can just buy another 1TB.
    2. Xbox memory is not in fact soldered to the motherboard although it doesn’t currently seem possible to replace the internal memory.
You are right that some motherboards support multiple NVME drives but I would take a fairly accurate guess in saying that most people don’t have motherboards that support multiple NVME drives, you can get adapters but then you loose out on the speed advantage.
As an additional point the Xbox drives are the smallest form factor on NVME drives, take a look at Gen 4 NVME drives in the 2230 form factor add on the cost of an enclosure/heat sink then tell me these are horrifically overpriced. Expensive yes - overpriced - not really

Only these Seagate ones work if you want to play games directly from them, unless the game is from an older generation.

This is one reason why I prefer the PS5's M.2 based expansion storage, for not much more I got a 1TB SSD w/ heatsink.

IMO if you're considering buying a Series S and immediately looking at something like this 512GB storage, the Series X should be considered instead, granted it's not a 1:1 comparison e.g. the Series X only adds 438GB and games may be larger, although I haven't had many problems with my Series X.

I suspect even if Seagate doesn't extend exclusivity then there would still be validation with Microsoft tax so price will never get close to standard nvme.

They've started making third party expansion cards in China that you can put an m2 ssd into. Problem is, the price difference is hardly different from the official at the moment because you need a particular model of m2 drive. Still, one to look out for as the tech improves, or you see a deal on one of the compatible m2 drives...

Slowly coming down in price which is good, but it would take the 1tb to be £100 for me to shell out. I'll just keep moving games about from usb external to internal until that point.

You'll get literally 500gb on this (a small amount will be reserved for moving files).
The console has the OS on it which is why we don't get the full 1TB.

I'm continually blown away by how much people upvote these AWFUL prices for these expansion drives. One person even said this is a 'bargain'! lol

This is just a plain despicably bad price.

And for all the 'well it's a 4.0 drive so it's actually a good deal' - no, I've gone over this a hundred times by now. It is not a 4.0-speed drive. It's only technically 4.0, but not for performance reasons. Real 4.0 drives can be up to like 3x as fast as this and basically the same price! I've seen 1TB 980 Pros go for only a bit more than this 512GB drive that's like 1/3rd the speed. It's absolutely dreadful.

But hey, keep buying them at such prices and thanking them for the 'great deal', and they'll keep y'all over the barrel. (edited)

Xbox if you want more memory you buy and add a memory card and just hot swap them out as often as you need to, longer term the Xbox system of memory may not work out to be as expensive as they first apear
