Exclusive NASware™ 3.0 Technology
Our exclusive advanced firmware technology, NASware™ 3.0, enables seamless integration, robust data protection and optimal performance for NAS systems operating under heavy demand. Built into every WD Red™ Pro hard drive, NASware 3.0’s advanced technology improves storage performance by increasing compatibility, integration, upgradeability, and reliability.
Built for Optimum NAS Compatibility
WD Red™ Pro drives with NASware™ technology takes the guesswork out of selecting a drive. Optimized for NAS systems, our unique algorithm balances performance and reliability in NAS and RAID environments. Simply put, a WD Red™ Pro drive is one of the most compatible drives available for NAS enclosures. But don’t take our word for it. WD Red™ Pro drives are a reflection of extensive NAS partner technology engagement and compatibility-testing.
Larger NAS Bay Shock Protection
WD Red™ Pro NAS HDDs are equipped with a multi-axis shock sensor that automatically detects subtle shock events and dynamic fly height technology which adjusts each read-write function to compensate and protect the data. Not to mentioned I bought a EUFY speaker that said 2 years warranty and died after 16 months. Eufy refused to honour and were then banned from Amazon. I went to amazon and said they were advertising on their site as two year warranty and they refunded me instantly. Given these drives literally say 3 years in the title I can't see any issues....
Plus ironically for this post the only NAS drives I've ever had fail were WD RED's, My last 4tb HGST ones (on ebay now) are still perfect after 8 years.

Be very wary of buying Internal Toshiba drives in Europe. They are good drives, but the warranty will not be honoured for retail customers only OEM's, it's a bit of a mess legally. Great elsewhere, but Toshiba are really not being a nice company.
This only applies to Internal drives, they have a warranty process for external drives for consumers they just refuse to have one for internal drives in Europe. (edited)
Wd red = smr 5400rpm
wd red plus = cmr 5400rpm
wd red pro = cmr 7200rpm
wd gold = cmr 7200 rpm
In April they had a sale on these and external drives so I managed to grab the 18tb Elements external drive for £232.04 once a 15% code arrived via email after I left the drive in my basket (when logged in obviously).
** Warning ** There may be a small amount of gloating in this comment ** **
There's still some amazon warehouse Toshiba ones but without the 20% off anymore... If you're not in a rush I'd be tempted to wait for the warehouse 20% offer again. I bought 4 and they all arrived brand new / sealed.

Correct, so the only warranty possible is with the retailer itself. In the case of Amazon:
Amazon Warehouse: First 30 days OK, first year possible with some effort, no subsequent years*
Amazon: First 30 days OK, first year OK, subsequent years possible with major effort*
*Results will vary depending on luck/account status/effort. It will usually be a "one-time exception" per account.

SSD are hugely overpriced, if you just need data storage and/or backup solution and don't need rapid read access then you're better off getting a conventional HDD such as in this deal.
Chinese whispers don't really help anyone. They distribute/ship from the Netherlands. Like many others including Logitech, HP etc. They pay the import duty in the price you pay them and it shows up on your invoice very clearly. Returns are to an address in Slough. Replacements may come from the Netherlands, but again no issues. Turn around times during covid have been variable, but so have they been for many companies. 30+ purchases from them in the last year and all have been delivered without a hitch. Last lot was 8 X 18TB HDDs.
I thought the same and kept wasting money till I braved a 10TB shuck around 5 years ago. At the same time I purchased a10TB HGST drive. Both in the same NAS. Both are equally healthy today and I have pased these on to my parents. My current NAS has 8 bays and the savings from 8 X 18TB is significant. Plus I have retained the enclosures in case I ever need to make a warranty claim. But a near £100 saving per drive X 8 is a lot of money.
I tend to use the Reds for my Plex server, they are quieter and use less power than the Gold as far as I can tell. Otherwise they are very similar. Any drive will be compatible with Synology.
Use them with anything that has the appropriate SATA support. They are often described as 'NAS Optimised' to be more resistant to vibration issues, firmware may be optimised to try fewer times for read errors so that you get a failed read as opposed to drive/array failing etc. (edited)
Never had an issue, unless "major effort" is just literally speaking to Amazon and tell them its failed under warranty?
Bought two to replace a couple of 4 GB Ironwolfs in my NAS.
I got a 15% discount code in April during a sale then, it worked on already on sale items unlike the newsletter one but they could have changed the rules since then.
I caved and went for an x300 @ £150 as it's never been cheaper but not a NAS drive if that's what you really need. Better than I was paying for 3TB drives but this is a better deal. Depends if you need that much really.
I'd avoid seagate and second hand drives though.
Toshiba is not Dynabook, and dynabook is not Toshiba. Toshiba span off several parts of their business as they were in financial trouble. They sold their laptop division to dynabook that is actually part of sharp corp. They also span off their memory and storage divisions (exceria now branded kioxia) Also their audio visual business (they don't make tv’s anymore, just re-badged or rebrand them).
You need to append "performance class" to the first two "rpm" values
As they are not necessarily the motor spin rate as your post implies
tomshardware.com/uk/…ned
They all do that. Which one hasn't? And I hardly think you not buying one or two HDDs from them will make any difference to them in the slightest. And it is like cutting your nose off to spite...... Buying a Seagate with poorer reliability to spite WD will only cause your more grief with warranty claims and refurb replacements. Toshiba drives are super noisy and they too have hidden SMR drives till recently. WD currently have the best reliability record and so I will still buy from them. (edited)
Received a 10% off code this morning but it doesn't seem to work with this deal unlike in April.
I think WD are the only ones to hide SMR in drives specifically marketed for NAS usage aren't they?
Im hoping by the end of the year
Im looking to replace 2 x 4TB drives in a RAID0 configuration with 2 x 16TB RAID1
Dangerous to wait. (edited)
I’ve had red drives for years touch wood never had one fail still got 6 1TB ones 4 in and old NAS and still work great.
Regards Tosh drives I bought 4 a few years ago on offer and 2 packed up within 2 years will never buy one again no matter what it’s for. (edited)
As I stated, results will vary depending on luck/account status/effort
If you already have warranty claims under your account, it becomes progressively more difficult depending on your account history/status. (edited)
I read somewhere that enterprise drives can be noisier, but don't have any personal experience of this.
Can anyone confirm/deny this?
Yes, enterprise drives are louder because noise isn’t much concern in a datacentre. You can probably search to find more specific information for individual drives
I tried the senior and newsletter discount on these and it didn't work
