WD Red Pro NAS Internal Hard Drive HDD 3.5" 16 TB

WD Red™ Pro NAS HDD. For the Demands of Big Business.

3941221_1.jpg
Designed specifically with medium or large scale business customers in mind, WD Red™ Pro NAS HDDs are available for up to 24-bay NAS systems. Engineered to handle high-intensity workloads1 in 24x7 environments, WD Red™ Pro is ideal for archiving and sharing, as well as RAID array rebuilding on extended operating systems such as ZFS or other file systems. These drives add value to your business by enabling your employees to quickly share their files and back-up folders reliably in your NAS solution.

Exclusive NASware™ 3.0 Technology
Our exclusive advanced firmware technology, NASware™ 3.0, enables seamless integration, robust data protection and optimal performance for NAS systems operating under heavy demand. Built into every WD Red™ Pro hard drive, NASware 3.0’s advanced technology improves storage performance by increasing compatibility, integration, upgradeability, and reliability.

Built for Optimum NAS Compatibility
WD Red™ Pro drives with NASware™ technology takes the guesswork out of selecting a drive. Optimized for NAS systems, our unique algorithm balances performance and reliability in NAS and RAID environments. Simply put, a WD Red™ Pro drive is one of the most compatible drives available for NAS enclosures. But don’t take our word for it. WD Red™ Pro drives are a reflection of extensive NAS partner technology engagement and compatibility-testing.

Larger NAS Bay Shock Protection
WD Red™ Pro NAS HDDs are equipped with a multi-axis shock sensor that automatically detects subtle shock events and dynamic fly height technology which adjusts each read-write function to compensate and protect the data. This combination of technology further protects the drives in larger 24-bay NAS environments and helps increase hard drive reliability.

3D Active Balance Plus
Our enhanced dual-plane balance control technology significantly improves the overall drive performance and reliability. Hard drives that are not properly balanced may cause excessive vibration and noise in a multi-drive system, reduce the hard drive life span, and degrade the performance over time.

Error Recovery Prevention
Built specifically for RAID and NAS environments, WD Red™ Pro NAS HDDs come equipped with error recovery controls as part of NASware™ 3.0 technology to help reduce drive fallout in RAID applications.

Extended Drive Testing
A NAS environment that has up to 24 bays is very demanding on a hard drive with added vibration and heat. This is why every WD Red™ Pro drive is shipped with extended thermal cycle burn-in testing to help ensure each drive is tested for extended reliable operation.

Longer Warranty Coverage
WD Red™ Pro NAS hard drives comes with a 5-year limited warranty for an even greater peace of mind.

Desktop drives vs. WD Red™ Pro
Do right by your NAS and choose the drive purpose-built for NAS with an array of features to help preserve your data and maintain optimum performance. Take the following into consideration when choosing a hard drive for your NAS:

  • Compatibility: Unlike desktop drives, these drives are specifically tested for compatibility with NAS systems for optimum performance.
  • Reliability: The always-on environment of a NAS or RAID is a hot one, and desktop drives aren’t typically designed and tested under those conditions like WD Red™ Pro drives are.
  • Error Recovery Controls: WD Red™ Pro NAS hard drives are specifically designed with RAID error recovery control to help reduce failures within the NAS system.
  • Noise and Vibration Protection: Designed to operate solo, desktop drives typically offer little or no protection from the noise and vibration present in a multi-drive system. WD Red™ Pro drives are designed to thrive in multi-bay NAS system environments.

Play Well with Others
Broadly compatible with most PC and major enterprise operating systems. Specifically designed for use in enterprise-grade data centers and storage systems.

Leading the Way
Energy-assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) technology enables higher media precision and increases areal density. The triple-stage actuator (TSA) enhances the accuracy of head-positioning and delivers better performance and data integrity to also increase areal density. Both EAMR and TSA are available only in 16TB capacities and above.

5-Year Limited Warranty

There's a website called Dynabook that is Toshiba run for Toshiba drives. First thing I did was go on there and register the drives. Says 3yr UK warranty, even has an option to upgrade to 5yr for £9.99 per additional year. There is also 12 months warranty with Amazon warehouse.

Not to mentioned I bought a EUFY speaker that said 2 years warranty and died after 16 months. Eufy refused to honour and were then banned from Amazon. I went to amazon and said they were advertising on their site as two year warranty and they refunded me instantly. Given these drives literally say 3 years in the title I can't see any issues....

Plus ironically for this post the only NAS drives I've ever had fail were WD RED's, My last 4tb HGST ones (on ebay now) are still perfect after 8 years.

In April they had a sale on these and external drives so I managed to grab the 18tb Elements external drive for £232.04 once a 15% code arrived via email after I left the drive in my basket (when logged in obviously).

Correct, so the only warranty possible is with the retailer itself. In the case of Amazon:

Amazon Warehouse: First 30 days OK, first year possible with some effort, no subsequent years*
Amazon: First 30 days OK, first year OK, subsequent years possible with major effort*

*Results will vary depending on luck/account status/effort. It will usually be a "one-time exception" per account.

SSD are hugely overpriced, if you just need data storage and/or backup solution and don't need rapid read access then you're better off getting a conventional HDD such as in this deal.

Chinese whispers don't really help anyone. They distribute/ship from the Netherlands. Like many others including Logitech, HP etc. They pay the import duty in the price you pay them and it shows up on your invoice very clearly. Returns are to an address in Slough. Replacements may come from the Netherlands, but again no issues. Turn around times during covid have been variable, but so have they been for many companies. 30+ purchases from them in the last year and all have been delivered without a hitch. Last lot was 8 X 18TB HDDs.

Tend to run it on WD reds and a Toshiba Nas drive assuming the ones that come in the external enclosures (white label) aren't exactly the best for constant Plex streaming....then again I bet they're perfectly fine.

I thought the same and kept wasting money till I braved a 10TB shuck around 5 years ago. At the same time I purchased a10TB HGST drive. Both in the same NAS. Both are equally healthy today and I have pased these on to my parents. My current NAS has 8 bays and the savings from 8 X 18TB is significant. Plus I have retained the enclosures in case I ever need to make a warranty claim. But a near £100 saving per drive X 8 is a lot of money.

I know others will work fine but all other aspects being equal, this just tips it over

I tend to use the Reds for my Plex server, they are quieter and use less power than the Gold as far as I can tell. Otherwise they are very similar. Any drive will be compatible with Synology.

However good the price is, it's pointless buying one. Having 16TB not in a RAID mirror config is too risky. The most unreliable HDD's I have known have been Toshiba drives in old apple macbooks. WD-RED have been the only drives I have used that have not failed. Oldest being 8 years.

Use them with anything that has the appropriate SATA support. They are often described as 'NAS Optimised' to be more resistant to vibration issues, firmware may be optimised to try fewer times for read errors so that you get a failed read as opposed to drive/array failing etc. (edited)

I ordered this on the last deal, and it never came after some back / forth - WD refunded us even though we asked for a replacement. Thought I was out of luck, but double win now as I can re-order, AND they gave us a 15% code which worked on the sale price here as a gesture of good will from the order mix up.

I caved and went for an x300 @ £150 as it's never been cheaper but not a NAS drive if that's what you really need. Better than I was paying for 3TB drives but this is a better deal. Depends if you need that much really.
I'd avoid seagate and second hand drives though.

Toshiba is not Dynabook, and dynabook is not Toshiba. Toshiba span off several parts of their business as they were in financial trouble. They sold their laptop division to dynabook that is actually part of sharp corp. They also span off their memory and storage divisions (exceria now branded kioxia) Also their audio visual business (they don't make tv’s anymore, just re-badged or rebrand them).

I'm not gone forever but it's always good to remind companies that these practices don't go unnoticed.

They all do that. Which one hasn't? And I hardly think you not buying one or two HDDs from them will make any difference to them in the slightest. And it is like cutting your nose off to spite...... Buying a Seagate with poorer reliability to spite WD will only cause your more grief with warranty claims and refurb replacements. Toshiba drives are super noisy and they too have hidden SMR drives till recently. WD currently have the best reliability record and so I will still buy from them. (edited)
