What's max miles doing 70mph vs max miles doing under 40mph ?? ??

Anything up to 60 in eco mode you can get around 4.5 miles per kw. I was averaging 3.3 miles per kw tonight with mostly motorway driving at 70.

There are a few software niggles to fix and some folks are getting an oil leak from the transmission box. Apparently a newly designed breather is shipping soon to resolve this. Overall it’s a brilliant car

How do these extortionate but cheap quality electric cars work on power? What if you have the heating on full, the music on, lights, window wipers. How many miles do you get then?

I average 5 mile a kw throughout the year with heating or air con on . It's great to get in warm already defrosted car on icy morning. Octopus charge 7.5 pence per kWh night time rate. Range drops around 5 miles per every 150 when using lights heating ect

Worth noting that quite a few of the first batch delivered have gearbox oil leak issues: mgevs.com/thr…41/

Was tempted to order one but going to wait a couple of months until the teething issues are sorted out, software updates are done etc. It's a brand new model after all.

The 400hp/awd is on my radar which should be due for sale next year.

I just picked up an MG ZS EV long rang, ordered 7 months ago, the new MG4 was at the garage.
I thought looks much better IRL (in real life) than photos suggest...
Driving electric MGs for over 2 years, electric all the way now!
Cheap to charge on overnight tariff, costing around 3p per mile, and saving 10-15p per mile or around £100 - 150 per month in fuel for 1000 miles.
    Free to tax
Cheap to service, no gearbox, no exhaust etc.
    Low depreciation
    No fumes
Low CO2 overnight electricity, often wind or nuclear powered, so repays the carbon cost of lithium within 1-3 years. Remember many "funded" comparisons don't count the carbon cost of extracting, transporting and refining the petrol / diesel, they cheat and just include the actual fuel burning in the car. Surprising because you would expect the oil industry lobby to be trustworthy!!

Do you think you'd have gone for the 4 over the ZS if you had the choice? I've been waiting for my ZS LR since January and think it looks a bit meh compared to the 4. Dilemma.

I don't get it with a lot of these EVs (and I do like this) but why are they designing them in the same way as the drawings we saw 30 years ago of what cars would look like in the future? I'm not saying it's bad design overall but they certainly look different to petrol and diesel cars

These appear have a common problem of oil leaks from the reduction gear box even at very low milage.

They not found the cause or solution yet so would avoid for now. Given how slow and terrible the MG dealers are I would avoid.

    DOI I have ZS EV

The problems been sorted, down to a breather pipe being to short and a slight over fill at factory. Easy repair no damage to any cars. You need to remember the car is a brand new ground up built car, nothing is ever perfect first time.

Anyone who has an EV and is not with Octopus should look again at both the Octopus Go tariff (4 hours at 12p per kw) and the Octopus Intelligent tariff (6 hours at 10p but restricted to just a few EV models unless you use an OHME charger in which case any EV can have this tariff.

Even with the new higher GO rates of 4 hours at 12p and 20 hours at 40p per kw - you should be able to achieve an average monthly cost per kw of between 25p and 30p depending on you ability to time shift heavy power users like charging the EV , using the washing machine and dishwasher etc.

Driving 10000 miles per year/ 830 miles per month and at 10p per kw this MG should cost you less than £25 a month in fuel (the same cost as about 14 litres of petrol)

And Octopus still give a £50 account credit to anyone who switches to them using a referal code from an existing customer.

If you cannnot charge at home then public charging is getting expensive, especially as Tescos is stopping its free charging w.e.f Nov 1st. However Lidl is still 'cheap' especially as they charge less on a Friday - 40p. Other wise look at the BONNETT app and their monthly bundles. Even their PAYG is "only" 50p per kw

Good luck with changing over to them. I tried just after the government price cap came in to force. They said I would have to pay the full uncapped rate £580/month vs the £290 British Gas were charging me. I would then get it credited back some time in the future.

Also don't take this out if you work from home in the day, as the day rate is a lot more expensive than a normal tariff. (edited)

I own a nissan leaf. This covers about 120 miles per week. Nissan let you charge for free at their dealers. I charge once a week there for 45 minutes and get a near full charge. I have owned my car for 1.5 years and only paid for electricity (fuel) about 5 times. No tax. No ULEZ. I also bought it 2nd hand for under £15k. I could currently trade it in for about £18k. (edited)

48538952-Y4a9d.jpgMy wife has had her MG 4 in Trophy trim for just under a month now. Great little runabout with zero issues so far. Good deal through Paul Rigby MG in Birmingham saw them take back her year old ZS with next to no depreciation on what we paid. She's never been a brand snob so switching to MG 2 cars ago wasn't an issue. Interesting to read all the neg EV comments on here - I'm sure most people sniping havnt even driven one 😞.

My partner has an MG zs ev.. it will say about 180 miles on full charge, you’ll drive on the motorway at a steady speed, keeping within the efficiency. You get about 80-90 miles, and that’s without using heating or aircon.

If I ever bought an electric car definitely go for one that has a high mileage range, unless you’re just running about town.
    Dejavu's avatar
    Dejavu
This doesnt add up at all. On the MG4 forums loads of users getting 3.6 to 4.1 miles/kwh so not sure where you got your 80-90 miles from.

Great reviews but I can't say I like the look of the car. I'm just not convinced by current EV's. Too expensive (mind, all cars seem too expensive to me) and after seeing the recent Dispatches programme, I wonder if they really are that environmentally friendly.
    Ega_Hacass's avatar

Do your research. Especially look at electric car recycling(look what tesla and redwood materials do). Then have a look on how much cobalt is needed for petrol refinement. I am sure you will get very clear picture. Btw how many companies out there recycle used petrol or diesel from your exhaust?

There still isn't an electric car with a decent range (as opposed to a range which assumes you crawl along with none of your inbuild gadgets or lights on) and a short enough charging time to make the technology worth buying in.

    Battery tech - VHS.
    Hydrogen Fuel Cell - Betamax

We'll end up with the EV as the path ahead because of the lie the infrastructure to make the change exists.

I've spent my entire working like on prototype car production and dealing with the Chinese the last 10 years and I wouldn't have one of their built cars if it was free. Even the Chinese don't want Chinese-built cars. Don't let the badge fool you into thinking its an MG.
Sorry folks but you've been warned

Unfortunately the data doesn't agree with your comment that the Chinese don't buy Chinese cars. 4 of ten new cars sold in China are now EVs, and of these, only 2 in the top ten are actually non-Chinese (both Tesla).
    48541556-wCvFp.jpg
And why wouldn’t they buy their own? Cars like the BYD HAN (no. 4 In popularity above) are every inch the equal of Tesla, just cheaper and actually, no gaping panel gaps for the kids to play hide and seek through haha. 500HP dual motor, red leather reclining seats, rotating centre console display, rear centre armrest digital console...just wish these brands will get here sooner so we have some real choice in the market.

Long range that's nothing like long range.
At least half the range of an ICE car and 100miles short of a proper long range EV.
Quite how they get away with calling this long range is beyond me.

Always have to smile when I see quotes, 'only costs 3p a mile'! I assume that the owner is not taking into account the extra 6 or 7 grand over an ICE equivalent. Try getting a cheap Night Rate now.
    paulde2007's avatar
    paulde2007
Well pence per mile has nothing to do with the cost of the vehicle... so you're correct, no one has taken it into consideration

As for the extra 6 to 7 grand, the ice equivalent aren't equivalent in most cases. But studies have also shown that if you don't just look at initial coats, but factor in all costs including maintenance, insurance, depreciation, etc. The ev versions work out cheaper.

Lastly, there are still peak deals. Mine admittedly went from 4.5p to 7.5p. So now gets me a 1.8p per mile .. just to give you a quote ha ha ha

Went and saw one on Friday. The back end looks a real mess IMHO with what looks like a big, chunky, plastic shelf across the middle of the boot lid. The one we looked at was white & my wife commented that it looked like a Darth Vader helmet from the rear! The inside looked spartan but OK.

Another thought - what happens if China invades Taiwan and there's a trade embargo and no spare parts available or warranty claims as a result? (edited)

In case you didn't know. I had one on order since August - just cancelled due to the oil leak issues. Neither the dealer or MG want to acknowledge this is a wide spread issues but 32k for a leaking EV was a nono. The fix apparently is a slightly longer breather tube

The Standard Range can easily get from London to Birmingham without needing a top up, its 120miles.
The Long Range might get your there and back if you drove like a Saint.
But even if you decided to top up you could stop for a toilet/coffee break and add some charge. You'd put about 80 miles of range into it in 10 minutes.
