With unique, 4-sided Ambilight, the Philips 55OLED856 draws you into the heart of the action.

Expanded vision with Ambilight 4-sided
Although this is a smaller OLED TV, 4-sided Ambilight makes it appear much more immersive. This unique Philips technology enjoys its ultimate incarnation, with 4-sided Ambilight. Using intelligent LEDs all around the TV, colour from the picture is cast into the room – in real time. Colour, vibrancy and excitement move beyond the screen and into your living room to bring you a viewing experience beyond the ordinary, with this extraordinary Philips 55 inch TV.

The ultimate picture technology - OLED
Delivering the ultimate picture quality, this Philips 55 inch TV uses OLED technology. Unlike conventional LED TVs, OLED doesn't need a backlight. Each pixel makes its own colour and light. When they are turned off, they are completely black. With deeper blacks you get enhanced colours and astonishing contrast that allows you to enjoy the purest, most lifelike image.

Introducing artificial intelligence, with P5 AI Perfect Picture Engine
The P5 AI Perfect Picture engine is the ‘brain’ behind the picture and even ‘thinks’ in a similar way to us. The powerful processor uses deep-learning AI algorithms to get the most lifelike images possible. Maximising detail, colour realism and smooth motion, the P5 AI engine optimises OLED and Ambilight for a brilliant performance.

HDR to the max, with HDR10+
For the highest quality picture, HDR10+ offers scene-by-scene HDR mastering for the truest, most accurate HDR picture technology to date. With HDR10+ each scene is optimised, meaning the maximum amount of detail is shown – even in the brightest or darkest moments. The 55OLED856 also supports standard HDR10 and HLG formats.

Gaming made better
With HDMI 2.1 connectivity at its heart, the Philips 55OLED856 has many features that makes it the ideal choice for gaming. Once connected to one of the HDMI 2.1 sockets, ultra-low-latency mode is automatically selected when begining game play. VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and FreeSync are supported, giving you the fastest and smoothest response possible. Unique to Philips, Ambilight’s gaming mode brings another dimension of immersion.

Dolby Vision for dramatic imaging
As well as supporting HDR10+, this Philips 55” OLED TV is also compatible with Dolby Vision - a leading format in Hollywood and cinemas around the world. Dolby Vision also adjusts the picture to take full advantage of each display's characteristics and presents an optimized picture for each scene in specially mastered content.

Dolby Atmos for enhanced sound
With a Dolby Atmos processor built-in, the Philips 55OLED856 decodes Atmos sound tracks - giving you the potential for an even more immersive sound. Featuring a built-in 2.1 speaker set-up with subwoofer and a 50 watt amp, it provides powerful, well-rounded sound.

Android TV for smart TV
In a complicated world of catch-up TV, Android TV makes sense of it all. Using a clear, intuitive interface, Android lets you effortlessly switch between Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Disney+ and many other services. Android lets you pick up where you left off in the latest series or check out new movie releases – all without getting lost within complicated menus.

Voice control with built-in Google Assistant and works with Alexa
Working via the built-in Android system, Google Assistant helps you find content, apps and even controls compatible smart home devices, such as the Philips Hue lighting system. All this is available by simple voice command. Alternatively, connect your Amazon Echo or similar Alexa device and use voice commands via Alexa (Works with Amazon Alexa).

Stylish design, with T-bar stand
Featuring a T-bar stand in dark chrome finish, the 55OLED856 stands out from the crowd. The quality of design extends to the remote control, which features a tactile, Muirhead leather-backed finish and backlit keys.

Whether you’re watching a movie, TV or gaming, do it in style, with the Philips 55OLED856.

I bought the 55’ 807 at 1289 a couple of weeks back - absolutely brilliant TV. The difference between this and the 806 is the additional 4th ambilight line at the bottom of the screen.

The 807 has the new EX panel and next generation ambilight - so each light is seperate. However there’s been close to zero sales for this just yet.. that is still retailing at 1299.

Only issue is gaming on 120Hz and having 4K for two ports. If you are into gaming that might be a bit of a problem, but I found this to be better than the C2 for my own needs/wants.

For the price this is a steal - built-in ambilight is a game-changer and is so immersive! Way better than any 3p (Govee/raspberry pi) solution and the Philips ambilight box comes to about 350-400 quid to properly set up.

also its half vertical resolution when gaming at 4k 120z with vrr due to the SOC not being able to handle full res

I went and got one from Stockport today. Really happy with it. Looks good. Great picture and surprisingly good sound. UHD programmes look great as does the PS5. Only minor downside is it's in a fairly light room and there is a slight light reflection. Overall well chuffed with it though

I'm so close to pulling the trigger on this but did see a comment about VRR somewhere. Can somebody shed some light on this for me please? Is this good for 120hz gaming are will there be some drawbacks? I'll be using for our main TV and also have my PS5 connected. I currently have 4k LED ambilight Phillips and love ambilight. I've seen a few LG Oled tvs and my brothers B1 looks really impressive but really don't want to loose ambilight. My other alternative at this price range is a CS but again, no ambilight Thanks

Basically, the TV supports full 4k VRR at 120hz but only for monitor mode. If you use gaming mode you only get a maximum of 1440p VRR @ 120hz. If you sit further than 4ft away from it when you game then you won't be able to tell the difference as 20/20 vision won't be able to see the pixels at 1440p. I have this TV and can confirm this is the case. Also the number of PS5 games that can even run native 4k VRR @ 120hz can be counted on one hand I think, if any at all.

Native 4k 60hz is fine, native 4k 120Hz is fine. 4k VRR 60hz is fine, it is only for native 4k 120hz VRR content which is instead shown at Quad HD (1440p) resolution. Very very narrow use case. (edited)

Are people happy who bought this ? Really tempted but also might be regretting because of the size. I would like to go for 65’’ around £1.000- £1.200 but not really sure if I can get soon. Also what is the main difference between this and 807 ? Any comments would be really appreciated. Thank you.

I went for it and it's a beautiful TV. Just for perspective I'm coming from a 10yr old 43" LG that's served me very well. So to me, it's a huge TV. The picture is stunning, the sound is great and I love the ambilight. I purchased a open box in which my wife managed to get an additional £50 off over the phone. When in the shop I was cheeky and got an extra £10 off, I signed up for the VIP club that offers a £10 voucher and asked if I can add that on top. So £740 all in with the 2yr warranty. Very pleased so far. Richer Sound service is brilliant too.

I cannot comment the difference with the 807, but 1 thing I remember reading is it's 30% brighter.

Lg C2 or this one is good?
    basemaster's avatar
C2. I’ve compared the C2 with the Philips at my local RS. Bought the C2, apart from the G2 the C2 was the best in store.

Shouldn't be allowed to sell these ambilight TVs. They're not fit for purpose. If you want the hassle of having your TV repaired all the time go ahead and buy now and regret later.
    Kermatt's avatar
Strange, they've been making them for 16 years? And yet they still manufacture them. If they had such a bad rep, they wouldn't be selling anyway.

Not sure if you realise, but the Ambilight function of the TV, has no bearing on the screen and the realibility of it. the Ambilight function is merely a set of light that tries to follow the colour of the image relative to the signal fed to the screen. Yes there a bit of software and hadware magic involved, but a TV being an Ambilight does not make any less reliable (though you could argue on a technical level it's another PoF).

Don't tell me, you had one and it failed, or perhaps someone you know (probably down the pub) told you they are unreliable, or worse still a Samsung or LG fanboi once posted about how unreliable they are despite never having owned one, and you took it as gospel.

I regularly see posters on here saying they've had ambilight TV's for years, and wouldn't go to anything else. Fanbois perhaps, but there's an awful lot of them! (edited)

I own this TV and you can't compare it to other Phillips non-OLED models at all, the differences are night and day.

Picture quality on this model is amazing, and the UI is decent enough. It also has hdmi 2.1 compatibility which is a must for next gen gaming.

I have a Panasonic OLED too and this is comparable, only issue is sometimes the eArc function can play up but could be solved with a firmware update.
    Jace_Phoenix's avatar
still has half resolution on 4k vrr though

You could also purchase the LG equivalent OLED tv and fit one of those govee tv immersion kits (edited)

Not bought a TV for a long time. Would this be ok for gaming? Any burn issues with OLEDs?
    Greg_Greg's avatar
I got mine for a year now. No problems whatsoever. I think if you take care of it, not leaving static pictures for long, using screen saver and finely turning it off when not used you should be more than happy.

Any good with an Xbox one? Thanks
    cheliuta's avatar
Hi Tom, I'll PM you in a bit, just want to clarify the issues I'm describing above are with the Philips customer service technical support. Nothing to do with Richer Sounds, it's only their website encouraged me to go to Philips first to fix the issue so I did. (edited)
  13. spenspuma's avatar
Personally I'd have a look at the genuine reviews on the actual Philips website before making a decision.

Most reviews mention software bugs, as well as Surround sound and eARC issues.

Supposed to be a fabulous picture though and good experience with Ambilight.

All in all its not an amazing TV, but it is a great price point for this particular model TV. (edited)
    Deal_searcher's avatar
Yes the picture is great but you are right that android TV does have a few shortcomings and with like all android software some bugs that will come through. With the 2 year warranty and in store purchase for £800 not worth the risk
  14. JJJZ's avatar
    This is tempting
    Deal_searcher's avatar
It is except with the LG cs expected around this price point and coming with a 5 year warranty it is a harder proposition. This TV has better picture quality (very marginal) and Ambilight but then LG has slicker os, magic remote and better gaming capabilities. Both I would put at the same level unless you really value the Ambilight otherwise better to go with a TV that has 5 year warranty. I know TVs are pretty robust and reliable these days and 2 years should be ok but when it is at this price point I don't think it is worth the risk. Others will quote the sale of goods act but that is massive hassle and richer sounds could argue that it is a new tech and wasn't expected to last this long hence 2 year rather than their usual 6 year warranty
  15. Squaresausages's avatar
I bought the 55OLED854 two and a half years ago, and haven't had a single issue with it, hence why I'm considering this deal and moving the 854 into the bedroom. I love the Ambilight, especially when wall-mounted. I've always used a Fire stick to get away from laggy TV OS, but the Android on the 854 has been great, really snappy. Only downside to the 856 is it doesn't appear to have the qwerty keyboard on the back of the remote.
    Fizzybottle786's avatar
Isn't the stand beautiful too, did you keep yours once wall mounted or chuck it away?
Is wall mounted better than the look of the stand?
  16. spenspuma's avatar
Shame this is collect only...the box wouldn't fit in my car.

Says freeview only but looking at the connections it’s got freesat as well. Freesat is going to outlive freeview by the looks of it as they farm more of the spectrum out for mobile internet. Can anyone confirm does this have freesat?

It supports FTA satellite, It doesn't support the Freesat EPG though. So there is no auto channel ordering, and no guide
How do you change channel? No epg?

They do have EPG but it's just "Now" and "Next", you won't get the full day or weeks tv guide as you would with freesat

100 day trial means they have confidence in the product. However I have the Philips 4k led amibilight in 55inch and it's rubbish. As much as I think the 100 day trial is a great selling point, my previous experience with the brand has put me off buying Philips ever again.
    mutatedllama's avatar
I have the 55OLED805 and it's absolutely brilliant. No problems with it at all. Regularly get comments from guests about how nice it looks. Ambilight is a big deal imo, don't think I'd get a TV without it in future.

If it had the 6 year guarantee I’d of gone for this.

Still amazes me all those asking from their oled phone with lots of static icons if screen burn is covered/a concern on a oled tv.
    spenspuma's avatar
It's true...ive got an S22 Ultra and it has screen burn, so if a £1300 phone gets it, I'd imagine a £799 TV definitely will.

Everytime there is a Philips Ambilight deal, all I hear is 'Android is Buggy"
Mine has been running smoothly for 5 years and others I know have no issues.
The Android OS is the easiest I found to use compared to Samsung and LG

I stand utterly corrected from my previous comment. Took a chance and picked one up from Cheltenham earlier today. Blown away. I made sure I updated to the latest firmware before I set up my amp or anything else and I’ve spent some time fiddling with the picture settings - but with all that done I’m so impressed. Integrates beautifully with my hue lights too. Very pleased - the panel is fantastic. Even the backlit remote is a joy to use. (edited)

I bought this TV recently on the 100 day trial for my parents. It's excellent on HD content. My issue is my parents usually watch SD content on Sky and this TV is pretty poor at upscaling. I'm therefore thinking of returning this and getting the Sony A80 which is apparently good at upscaling.

    Any thoughts are appreciated.
    Kermatt's avatar
Harsh as it sounds, try and limit the amount of SD content being consumed on a 55" TV.

Most of the main channels are HD, especially with Sky. If you have anything bigger than a 37" SD always looks quite poor tbh. I used to upscale my SD back in the day via a Toshiba HDMI DVD recorder which was actually quite effective. But that was on a 42".

I mainly watch HD content (recordings via Freeview) on my 70" Ambilight, I've just watched the last series of Hunted which for some reason I recorded in SD (off Channel 4+1 I think) and tbh once I got over the fact it wasn't HD it wasn't really an issue.

But definitely get them over to watching the HD channels. My auntie is terrible for watching SD on her 55" because she can't get her head around the fact you press 101 instead of 1 lol. She doesn't use the EPG.

I too bought this in the Black Friday sale for £799. Upgrading from an old 40” Sony which 10 years ago cost about the same. Has all the apps I need - Disney+, NOW, Netflix. Apple TV and iPlayer. Just watched The English in UHD on iPlayer. With the ambilight I was totally blown away. For me this is a fantastic TV at a fantastic price.

I bought the Philips 55OLED805 around 18 months ago for £1,150 with 6 year warranty. Well worth it. Can't speak for this model but it's made me love the quality of Philips and ambilight.

Can you get the itv hub app OK?
  31. RiceeChrispies's avatar
I love my Philips OLED, best TV I've ever owned. Contrary to other experiences in this thread, I haven't experienced many issues with the Android TV and prefer it over LG's webOS. The Xbox Series X looks lovely on it, with green ticks across the board.

The only downside is the EPG is a bit cr@p, but who actually watches telly on a TV nowadays?
  32. Wonderer's avatar
I got one of these on the Black Friday sale (same price) and I think its great, especially for games. OLEDs aren't great for 24fps content (like films) because of the uber-high response rate, so the watching experience takes a little getting used to.

I really enjoy the ambilight too - once you get used to it, you really miss it when going to a TV without it.
    iby2012's avatar
Is this why the TV 20 years ago shows football better then our TV from 10 years ago and now? The ball on the pitch blurrs and your supposed to fiddle the setting but not sure it will ever be as good as he wants it.

Still give it another 20 years might have 600Hz TVs, problem solved. Upscale 24/25/30/60/120. Provlem solved. 24*25=600... (edited)
  33. Velete's avatar
One thing that might bug some people :

This model has a gap in the ambilight due to the stand (bottom middle section missing) is slightly noticeable/annoying with the stand on , but when mounted alternatively (wall mount) it looks dreadful! - I ended up the 806 model instead as it doesn't have one
  34. Nicholas_Carey's avatar
Better than the old ones that use to have white spots appear? Quality of Philips tv’s were not great. (5 years old)
    Nicholas_Carey's avatar
Anyone are Phillips tv better quality now?
  35. geekonthepc's avatar
I was seriously considering what looks to be an epic deal but if you read Philips product page there are countless reviews of Android TV being very buggy on this TV, not to mention forum posts etc. Might have to be a pass but damn the price is tempting.
    jjames87's avatar
I've read that Philips are quite poor at fixing issues / firmware updates as well, but I've no idea if it's as bad as they say as we don't get too many reviews on these units.

I am a bit of a tech nerd. I have this exact tv. Purchased from RS with 6 Yr warranty for £899. I am in love with it. Ambilight has ruined all other tvs for me. The support of all major video formats is great. Also great for gaming. At £799 I highly doubt anyone will regret buying this. I understand the 120hz VRR 4k debate but for a 55inch TV at normal viewing/gaming distance the difference is virtually impossible to resolve, 1440p is fine for me in this extremely narrow usage case.
    J40NYR's avatar
You know 120hz 4k VRR has been completely fixed now? Update to the latest firmware and make sure you are on HDR Monitor on the image settings.

Full resolution with all the bells and whistles I have checked this with 4k patterns to make sure it isnt downscaled and it isnt
