Had to bite at this price - if it's crap, it goes back.

My fourth Chromebook for me and the family - if you haven't tried one yet, you really should....

    Updates until June 2027

It won't be crap. I have a similar powered Chromebook which I just gifted to my sister as I have my own laptop with Linux on it. She remarked how quick it is compared to her work supplied HP laptop with Windows 10 on it.

The beauty of Chromebook is you can also run Android Play Store apps on it and Linux apps. It's very unlikely to get a virus. You can powerwash reset in seconds if you get issues. It's still a quick performing OS on low powered machines.

The bad is if you wanted to run Adobe software or iTunes or stuff like that, iTunes can't be installed but it would need WINE setting up and emulating. Too much hassle for the general user. (edited)

I'm trying to find a reason to buy one of these.. what can I use it for that I can't do with my tablet?
    morgie's avatar
More useful for productivity, with a physical keyboard, full desktop browser and 14" FHD screen. Of course comsuming media like videos etc is all possible too, but might come down to the best form factor for you to potentially rival your tablet. A 14 inch non-touch screen Chromebook like this one may not be the natural competitor, but maybe a smaller 11.6 inch convertible with a touch screen is.

    Showing as £299 now ?

There are plenty of HP 14a refurbs on ebay and they have the 20% off voucher at the moment. If you wanted a 14a I'd go for one like this with the Pentium Silver N5030 processor and 128GB storage, £127.99 after the voucher code 'SPECIAL20', you can also combine with TCB. ebay.co.uk/itm…676 (edited)

    Anyone run linux on this?
Is it usable for Netflix, amazon prime etc?
    Josh.Rogan's avatar
I've considered these before, but eventually think 'whats the point?' if you are running linux, getting a used thinkpad has to be a better option - an x240 can be got for hundred quid, and run linux superbly.

i'm quite sure linux would run on these, and maybe even better than windows, or it might not like the wifi card, or the graphics driver or... etc.

I bought old thinkpads for my kids when they were in primary school and they have been superb, run linux like a champ and are totally kid-proof. When they got to high school they installed windows on them, at which point i dusted my hands and told them 'you are on your own now, IT support is walking away from this'

Pretty impressive what 6 watts gets you in terms of processing power these days. Just a shame there is no HDMI output on many of these Chromebooks, would have been nice to have the option of hooking it up to a larger screen.

We have a couple of Chromebooks and use a USB C adapter that has extra USBs , HDMI and USB C charger port. They were about £12.99 from Amazon.

Thought it might scrap through on TCB 7% HP Laptop but don't think it's on the selected machines

Also what actually is the difference between this one and the one that's full price with a single digit difference in product title???

Am not very good with technology 😁 would this or argos.co.uk/pro…896 be better for my 10 year old using his Christmas money to replace his tablet. Many thanks for any advice!

The HP has a better screen resolution, the Acer has a faster processor.

Can these run windows and office. My wife has a 12 year old laptop that she uses to access her school server ( work -she is a teacher) where she logs in to a remote windows /SharePoint account.
    Would this work?

This chromebook is junk. I bought one of these and had to send it back twice due to it not being able to hold a wifi connection. Eventually got a refund and bought a lenovo Chromebook. Much happier now. Wouldn't buy another HP. (edited)

Well I've had various Chromebooks from Lenovo, Acer, Asus, etc. The only one I've had with WiFi issues was a Lenovo so you can't say for sure.

Having said that, my current is a Lenovo and it's the best one I've had.

I went into my local Norwich store and I spoke to a sales advisor about this particular Chromebook . He told me it was out stock but it could definitely be ordered for home delivery or to store as he checked stock on his ipad . I agreed to this straight away. However after waiting for several minutes and he told me it was no longer on stock. However on the tag in store it stated the deal was from 22nd Jan to the 16th Feb . I'm guessing that didn't want to honour it at £129.99 so told me it was out of stock instead. I could see his colleague or manager having a chat to him about it (the price online had gone up to £299.99) before he told me the news. (edited)

Right I reserved one a fair distance away last week and went and picked it up today.... thought something wasn't right as when handed the box something felt like it was shifting around inside upon opening it the book itself seemed secured in original packaging but the power supply had been sliding around in the seperate end compartment.... clearly originally would have had some packing item to secure it so this was a reseaked box as far as I could guess. Set up the chromebook and all seems well..... until I put it away... happen to turn it over now and do see lots of very significant scuff marks on the base and apparent wear/damage in the bottom corner of the silver side case.

Clearly a customer return or a bad refurb.... not happy that it wasn't marketed s such will be complaining to curry's and questioning what trading standards would think of such dishonest marketing.

In fact is the following sticker on the box suggesting this is a c grade item?

Anyone has issue where WiFi keeps showing as weak signal
    E_T_C's avatar
I have not seen any issues with WiFi on my one, I read that some USB WiFi adaptors do work with Chromebooks if the WiFi is causing problems or contacts Currys via Ebay to return the Chrombook.

2 months later and I can say I am pleasantly surprised by this! It's pretty speedy for browsing and day to day work. Would highly recommend if you need a no fuss laptop that gets the job done!
