Can you remember anything about your holiday after that?

In all seriousness tho, agree. For an extra few euros 1st class is very decent indeed esp on long journeys.

very competitive ticket prices. Any suggestions about the availability of the train pass availability for two or three days? I am traveling to Spain in the first week of April. Thanks

The only train pass on offer from Renfe is the 'Spain train pass'. Details here: seat61.com/tra…htm

Unfortunately, the pass isn't for X days, but number of journeys. If you are taking a number of high speed trips and need flexibility, it can work out well.

Sadly, interrail isn't great in Spain, as you need to (i) pay a supplement per train and (ii) you can only make compulsory reservations in person (not online, like you can with the Renfe Spain pass). (edited)

In Spain in Sept 22 and for 5 months short and medium distance train were free for commuters to help with inflation and increased energy prices. Similar offers for most European countries.

In the UK instead train service is mostly privatised................... (abusing ellipsis)

Try getting a permanent job in spain though, it's awful. Just work from contract to contract in most good jobs, you are not guaranteed to have permanent work and the unemployment rate is one of the highest in Europe at 14% . Spain probably terminated 100's of train worker contracts to pay for those free trains lmao.

Are their train drivers due to strike over pay? (edited)

and nurses , ambulance drivers , RMT , firemen , the list goes on and on , Not forgetting barristers Oh they called it off after being given 15% pay deal but they need it with only £71,680 average pay , By they way most train drivers haven't had pay rise for over 4 years but fact is strike's are more about conditions and safety (edited)

Am I allowed to bash the Spanish? They spent 258m euros on new trains to find they are too wide for the tunnels. Doh! 😳

That’s not true. I’ve been on this exact journey and train. They have a display at the end of the carriage that tells you information like speed.

The train was doing 300kph plus. Or. 186mph. And it was buttery smooth and on time unlike the shocking rail network in the UK.

    Bring on HS2. (edited)

One last thing, I believe in high speed rail but you have to queue for a while to get on this train, it kinda defeats the object somewhat as it slows boarding down.

Probably only delays it by 5 mins but still.

And for all you people saying this is cheap, it's not normal for prices to be this low. I remember travelling on the AVE over ten years ago and the cheapest fare I could get in advance was 48euros for Madrid-Barcelona. (edited)

Just realise this is a new stripped down product. That's good. But the price is way lower than the AVE to account for that. (edited)

I am definitely going to use this - thank you OP. Can anyone tell me if there is a similar service from Madrid to San Sebastian as well?
    supermann's avatar

Won't be AVE or AVLO but can prob get the AVE to Zaragoza and get a train from there.

You can get a train from Atocha to San Sebastian though. Takes about five hours.

To be honest, the scenery is pretty nice on the way I think. If it was me I'd probably get the bus. Bus services in Spain are much better than the UK. They're the most popular form of public transport there.

It actually also says something about their regional train services too and how affordable trains are to the general population. (edited)
