Can someone tell me in simple terms what this does please?

You put a SIM card in it (one with a data plan, ideally) and then you connect to it with WiFi like you would at home, except you carry this out with you and effectively have WiFi everywhere you go. Ideal for going abroad where you might not necessarily want to roam with your existing SIM card but instead buy a separate roaming SIM with a data plan which could be more cost effective.

Don't really see the point of these when you can just turn your phones hotspot on

I just turn these on and turf them into my backpack while away on holiday. Constantly stays on and lasts a couple days between charges.

When I trialed using a spare phone the hot-spot would keep dropping out if nothing connected to it after a while. The battery wasn't as good, and I was constantly worried about breaking the phone in my bag.

These are cheap fire and forget devices.

I wonder when 5G ones will drop in price.

I've always just used a cheap 5G phone for this instead. It was very handy when I ditched Virgin Media for a while to use Vodafone 5G in London for my home broadband.

Would this run without the battery in? Want to have one at a remote site but don't like idea of battery constantly being charged.

Couldn't you use something like a physical timer. Something like those plug in units with the fins that you flick out.

Set it to charge the unit for 30mins every 2 hours (or whatever becomes optimal).

Seeing as it's running off a battery you could even use a WiFi switch to charge it and control it remotely, but if it drops out you lose that ability to communicate with the switch.

Id there a companion app with the router that you could use IFTTT or similar to get a WiFi plug to recognise the battery level dropping to say 20% and getting the WiFi plug to charge until it reaches 80%?

Just chucking a few ideas out there.

I have 250gb data on my mobile contract, would I be able to put my phone sim in this and use it to view Prime when in the caravan, does anyon know please? Sorry, am very ignorant on these things. Also, is it a fairly good device?
    Ash9694's avatar
Yes will work or you could just turn on the hotspot on your device, save you having to buy this and remove your SIM card, no comment on the quality of this device
  7. andrewworrall1's avatar
Can this be used as a "home WiFi" with a data only SIM card?
    Ash9694's avatar
Yes but will probably be limited on the number of Devices you can connect to it

I just have a router where I connect my phone into by USB to share WiFi at home. Good use for an old mobile
    Vinny-Eir's avatar
    That’s something new I learned

I have a netgear rebrand from well known Chinese site. Great for kids in the car no need to hotspot from phone and handy if I run into the shop and leave them in the car with the wife

If you have an old phone - use that on hotspot . Or even buy a cheaper old unlocked phone - as they tend to get better speeds than these MIFI devices ( as they can get 300Mbps).
    Speculator's avatar
Extremely unlikely you can get 300Mbps on 4G.

Anyone have any experience of using these abroad? I don't know much about 'bands' but it doesn't list them.

Thinking it would be a good addition for a trip to South America if it actually would work.

I currently use an old oneplus 2 on permanent charge as a hotspot, but it tends to overheat and cause trouble. Any ideas how this would compare when multiple devices are in use?
    A57ton's avatar
You should never continuously charge a battery. These things are known to swell the battery’s for that reason.

    Is it dual band wifi?

Is this better than the e5573b Huawei one?
  16. Stevie_mower's avatar
Is there a USB plugin version available please?
  17. fnorbika's avatar
What's the difference between this and normal mobile hotspot/tethering?
    Stevey83's avatar
Nothing. Wi-Fi signal might be better with a modem, but any phone with 5g that can hotspot will be able to do it.
  18. JonathanCassar's avatar
No real difference - battery life is often better on these devices than your phone as its only doing one thing and no screen etc
So it saves your battery on your phone
The downside is you'll need a dedicated sim
    Chris_R23's avatar
Lebara or Lyca it is lol

Ended up getting a Huawei..just prefer something branded..

Did anyone receive the order? I haven’t yet.
  21. earney's avatar
Had one of these for a while. Does the job.
  22. TotallyReem1's avatar
Well mine has turned up and I can’t get it to work with a smarty mobile sim, any help would be appreciated
    A57ton's avatar
You may need to add APN settings and login details manually.
  23. mattr's avatar
Anyone got these that can comment on the "standby life". Ie does it stay powered on, on battery, with no clients associated to the wireless until the battery runs out. I have two Huawei units that switch off when nothing associated, which means powering the unit back on.
  24. emeral's avatar
How can we tell if the device is on or off please
    mattr's avatar
If you press the power button once quick the 3 icons will light up if on.
