I have a Virgin Media broadband deal where my contract finishes in April and the price is set to double. I'd ideally like to stay with Virgin Media and renew at a better price. When is the best time for me to get in touch with them, and what's the best approach to take on that call?

Probably 30 days before your contract ends. Bear in mind the cs person you speak to at that stage will have access to a few discounts/incentives in order to get you to re-contract but it is usually nothing in comparison to the outbound retentions team.

So, ring 30 days before and discuss your options, don’t let them pressure you into anything and if the deal is good enough for you, re-contract to save you any further hassle.

But if the deal is not good enough, or you want to see what else you can get, you put in a cancellation then and there. Give them the 30 days notice and you’ll get a date your services will end.

It’s then a waiting game for the outbound retentions team to call you, you can’t call them, they might call soon, they might wait until day 29, they might never call as you’ve set your preferences to no marketing calls etc

Last time I did it I missed two calls from them around a week before cancellation and then finally got talking to them 2 days before my end date. New contract was £20+ cheaper, and included Netflix and 2 updated 360 boxes. I’m fairly close to this dance again as my contract ends in June and I haven’t had a price increase notification yet.

I'm sure I have an annual post about this, but I put in my notice today with them due to the price increase. I'm currently on 200mb (?) But get the 500mb Volt for £28pm.

I spoke to them on WhatsApp but they was in no way interested in offering me a deal, the best they said they could do is "offer me a discount to bring the price down to £28pm until your contract ends in August this year".

I was half tempted, but I figured that this would be 6 months away, so if I negotiate something now at least I'll save 6 months on my new contract agreement.

I'll away the next phone contact... But as what happened last time on the phone. They basically know Virgin Media in my area is top dog with zero competition.

OpenReach only offer 60-70mb, so Virgin are in no way inclined to offer me a brilliant deal because they know I'll have no choice. Even the new customer deals with Virgin aren't so good this week

I wouldn't say it's because they know they're the best in your area. As I pointed out earlier in this thread, they offered me the deal of £43 for their 125M connection. While this is also above the average of BT's Open Reach in our area (BT's Fibre2 at 70Mb/s), we also have access to Full Fibre to the home with Lila Connect, and are enjoying 1Gbit up and down - something I took instead.

So, it seems Virgin Media's key motivation is profits (as with any business), but as long as the area you're in has a sufficient enough users, they don't mind dropping some if it means they're less likely to over subscribe the aera. This means they don't have to pay additional costs to fulfil a network upgrade. A lesser of two evils for them, in doing so they're retaining more profits.

I think Virgin Media know their time is coming to an end, as you said as Top Dog.
As more cities sign up to locally owned fibre connections, with the government run gigabit voucher now providing up to £4,500 to help install gigabit speeds with some areas getting up to £7,000 via gigabitvoucher.culture.gov.uk

As part of the government's plan to get everyone gigabit full fibre to the home, Ofcom has said they expects to pass the 50% threshold in March, and to reach more than 80% by the end of 2025.

Just five years ago only 6% of homes could get full fibre. Now cities are providing help and funding to local businesses, meaning last year in September that had reached 42%.

Hopefully your area is close to being completed.

For what it’s worth, I spoke to their retentions team via telephone today (after I got the email about £7 price increase). I was on their 150Mb plan for £29/month (so £36 a month with the upcoming price increase).

They put me on 264Mb for 18 months for £26/month.

Not the cheapest it seems reading in here but can’t grumble at speed increase and cheaper price. (edited)

Currently paying £55.65 for M125 and line rental. Went to cancel and got it down to £32 a month for M250. Still cancelled today though…wait to see if/when retentions ring me for a better deal. Hope they come through, especially as seeing deals people have been getting here!

What is m250 broadband and why am I paying £68 a month for 130mb, with a recent notification that its going up again by £12 a month in May?
    sajidtg's avatar
    sajidtg Author
£68 a month for 100mb broadband is criminal.
Do you have sports and movies as well?
Even then its too much, time to call and demand better deal.
If they don't offer anything, put in cancellation and wait for outbound retention to call you.

I cancelled last month, they got back to me last week with an amazing offer.

They offered me, for a one time deal that's normally £57 but they can do it for me at just £43 for 18 month contract.
It includes phoneline with talk any number at the weekends starting 0, 1, 2 and includes Virgin Mobile numbers and a "full fibre" broadband bundle M125 that has download speeds of 132mbps and a upload of 20mbps.

I'm getting really sick of these new customers only deals. Whilst they just seem to have a laugh at us long standing customers. It's almost as if Virgin incentivises the call centre staff to have a competition to see who can charge customers the highest price for the least amount of speed and services.

I'm currently paying £37 for just m200 bb no phone or tv. Why can't they just charge a fixed rate to everyone regardless, instead of this variable price and mid contract price hikes. Along with all the contract renegotiation every time.

Definitely cancel and switch. I'm with virgin and gona do the same tbh. Need a good cashback/gift card deal.

I went through Bluelight card and got this for £23.95 for 18 months a few days ago. Total cost about £431. No cash back though. The pain I had with them in the past is that I had to leave at the end of contract as they refused to give a discount and I certainly wouldn't be recontracting for the ridiculous £57 after 18 months

Does anybody fully understand the new price increases? The email I got says my sub will up by £7 a month but also says "this 2023 price increase won't affect you until your current price offer ends." As I'm on an 18 month offer until May 2024, does this mean my price is frozen until then?
    sajidtg's avatar
    sajidtg Author
Yes, if it says yours wont be affected then your price will not go up from April.

Got the "going up by £7" email. Phoned retentions. Price frozen at £24 for 370mb (with Volt) until end of contract in 2024. We are active with PCs working from home, simultaneous TV streaming, gaming, etc. and no lag so don't need more. A small victory today

Monthly price after the offer period is extortionate, no doubt VM are hoping people forget to renegotiate after 18 months!

We can't get virgin in our area though and last time I changed to Plusnet several years ago the service didn't seem as stable (edited)

I’ve just given notice to end my contract. They wouldn’t even match this deal for new customers. I’ve been with VM for 15 years. Going to try Vodafone 200MB for £27 per month.

Put in my cancellation due to price increase. Paying £20 a month for 250mb package for broadband only.

When I phone the automated system offered me a £3.50 discount till end of my contract. I declined and went with cancellation option. Hopefully will get a better deal from outbound retention team.

I want a faster speed for the same or lower price ideally. Otherwise I'll remove the cancellation and ask for the £3.50 discount till June 2023. Then try and get a better deal at contract renewal time 😬

Soooo I got an offer from their live chat - paying £35 M250 broadband, Land-line with weekend and evening chat and O2 sim with unlimited everything. They also had their gig offer for £40 a month with same Land-line and sim card but I didn't need that. 18month contract

(and specifically no price rise). We also have an o2 mobile in the house so am going to volt it up to M360! (edited)
