Are these still upgradeable? I have a 2013 Mac mini that I upgraded the SSD and RAM in, wondering if they've changed the accessibility to stop that.

To answer my own question, it is totally impossible to upgrade this, sadly.

Would love to pull the trigger for Web dev but scared about only 8gb of unified memory. Does this translate equally to traditional ram performance?

No, I do 4k editing on my M1 8gb 256 Mac mini and hasn't skipped a beat with everything I throw at it.

Don’t forget. If you have a Totum card (easy to get if you don’t have one) you can get this Mac mini for £539.  Also the AppleCare is cheaper if purchased at the same time.

Just two weeks ago I did exactly this.   It’s an amazing machine!

not sure why companies still do 8gb / 256gb ssd models. way way to small. needs to be at least 16gb and 1gb ssd

Because somebody that doesn’t need 1TB shouldn’t have to pay for it when 256GB would suffice for them.

Also 256GB SSD is slower so it would be more worth to pay for 512GB. (edited)

No - the iMac screen can’t be used as a screen only.. you’d need to buy a screen as well.

Criminal to sell a device with only 8GB of RAM that you can't upgrade. So wasteful. With more RAM this could last many years.

If you can, buy the 16GB model as it uses the non-replaceable SSD less as a swap file, compared to the 8GB model (in memory-intensive tasks).

Most of the negative reviews I read of this model are how incredibly slow the SSD is (in certain tasks) compared to Macs of many years ago (I'm not used to seeing Apple reviewers/users raging!) and that you should go for the 512GB model which is much faster in those particular usage cases but... the way I see it, as we don't know for certain how long the non-replaceable SSD will last, though it is presumed to be a good long time, but that it will likely last longer than if it's less used as a swap file 8GB model if you instead use the 16GB model (if you've bought said computer to do demanding, memory-intensive tasks), if I had to choose between 8GB/512GB and 16GB/256GB, I would go for the latter.

To try and preserve the life of the internal SSD indefinitely to ensure resale value, I looked into booting from an external drive and it works well, is faster than the internal drive, but in some usage cases it slows to an agonising crawl, so deemed by the initially very excited reviewer as not worth it, as a boot drive, at least.

A few days ago on an tech channel, someone was saying Apple have or reducing the price of the 512GB model (though again, I would prioritise 16GB over the larger/much faster 512GB SSD.

If anyone is interested you can get an Apple M2 Mac mini 8-core CPU 10-core GPU 24GB RAM 256GB SSD - with APRIL10 £75 discount code and an extra 1% through Quidco from Deecies eBay store(£954 plus another 1% off). The drive is small but you can just boot from an external NVMe drive(of whatever size you want) in a £20 10Gbps enclosure. (edited)

In 2023 it should be illegal to have 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of space. It’s a cracking deal, but those specs won’t last

Never had any problem with a Mac running with 8 GB though the Intel MM I had did have issues but I put it more down to the CPU than the RAM size.

I had the M1 and loved it. Toying between a Mac Mini and a MBP at the moment
One of my biggest slowdowns was the Logitech Options software (and, thinking about it, WhatsApp too). Used around 2gb of RAM for some reason, so killing it every couple of months made a big difference

I am using WhatsApp's native (Apple Silicon) beta. Uses 140MB of RAM. Their standard electron-based client which runs under Rosetta was pretty unusable, probably the slowest thing I could run on my MBP.
I guess they still have it in beta because it's a completely new design so missing some things here and there, but compared to the unusable mess they should really get on with it and release it officially. (edited)

I've got the 8gb/512gb. Pretty good for my usage. Browsing, occasional video editing (no issues using Final Cut) and watching streaming services.

I used to be a desktop buy late 90’s to late 2000’s. I was originally using hackintish setups. I bought my first official MacBook Air in 2013 and haven’t looked back since. I bought the Mac Mini M1 to and after three months of owning it realised it just sat behind my TV doing absolutely nothing. - So I sold it and when I saw a crazy deal for a MacBook Air M1 for £530 I bought it instantly in august 2021. Sold my Early 2013 MBAir for £210 which made the upgrade cost £320.

My entire personal daily setup is, M1 MacBook Air; M1 iPad Pro 512GB. iPhone, Apple Watch & AirPods Gen 3. I’d highly recommend a MBAir M1/2 over a Mac Mini just for portability factor.

As for Office; you can either use Office 365 subscription or Office for Mac 2019/2021. If you’re technical you can download the volume license edition and have it activated for free.

regarding 8GB/256GB. Docks exist, if you’re doing things like video editing, downloads etc most of the time the files won’t be living directly on your internal SSD anyway and will either be on a NAS / external SSD.

Eh, I don't think they did. I just found an order of mine from April 2013:

Mac mini £509.00With the following configuration:•2.3GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    •4GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    •1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    •User's Guide (English)
    •Accessory Kit

Though things were much better back then, as I added my own 256gb SSD and put in 16gb of RAM. Mad to think that was 10 years ago and they're selling one with 8gb of ram now!

The entry Mac Mini in 2005 at launch was £339 in UK.
Adjusted for inflation that is about £555 today in 2023.

Exchange rate was also about 1.7 to 1.8 USD to GBP back then. It was $499, which is $768 in today's money (US inflation), vs $599 in US today (though it is smaller and you don't get an optical drive, so makes sense it's come down). That's £615 at current FX rates (although US prices don't include sales taxes, so more comparable when you add that in).

At the moment maybe, but the performance won't be as good, and as more software shifts to be arm compiled, that will change.
