All of the base model M2 MBAs got reduced by £100. I was surprised to see that the Refurbished store also got discounted models, and is cheaper than even the Education store.

All four colours are on there for £979. These come with the standard 1 year Apple Warranty as well, and my 14" MBP was pristine when I bought it from the Refurbished store.

I bought this machine from the Costco recent coronation deal, new at £999 with a £75 voucher. Base spec model yes - but it is a beast of a machine that out performs my 16gb 12th gen 17 - those Apple silicon chips sip the power. Excellent design, build quality power and i've not seen an issue with RAM, if anything i've seen worse performance on a 16GB windows machine than the 8gb version of this!!

8GB RAM really is just criminal in 2023...

It’s not RAM, it’s unified memory. Knowing why it’s different, how macOS runs and ultimately what this device is designed to be used for? 8gb is perfectly fine.

I have the base model M2 MBA and I use it for occasional video editing with Final Cut Pro from a drone (hobby, not work related or time sensitive), and it can handle that with no issues; multiple streams of 4K footage, with music, effects and some title cards in the timeline without dropping a frame.

If you’re wanting pro level performance, there happens to be a device just for you, with Pro in the title. For most people? This device will do just fine. (edited)

Macbook PRO M2 2022 or this?

Unless you are going to be pushing your laptop hard for sustained periods of time, go for the Air. It has a newer design, and a slightly better screen. It’s thinner and lighter, and doesn’t have a Touch Bar (which is a good thing in my opinion).

The Air has the same chip but without the active cooling (fans). So after sustained loads for longer periods of time, it will throttle down to stop itself overheating, whereas the Pro’s fans will kick in to keep it cooler so it can go perform faster for longer. The plus side of the Air is that it is totally silent at all times.

How are the refurbished models? I’m very tempted at this price. Thanks!

    Jebus Price!
every single line in that overview is disgusting

priced up a 7700X with a 6700XT and 32 GB RAM, NVME 5000MB 2TB Hardrive on PC for less.

I guess we can all agree that Apple fans deserve this.

Always useful to compare completely different products when deciding value

Weyhey, making room for MacBook Air 15inch version!

Also it's about time they got the price lowered; it was cheaper to buy brand new otherwise from retailers.

Does it make sense to get a MacBook for DJ/media/video editing hobby if no other Apple devices are being used in the household?
    speediemc's avatar
I use either or for my work and I run a media business that entails videography and photography so it’s down to personal preference. I’ve always been a windows user but in the lockdown I got a MacBook Pro. Most DJs use MacBooks but don’t get one just to follow suit get what is affordable and more reasonable. My serato software works on both platforms too (edited)

Cracking deal, with these specs shouldn’t cost more than £400 . But of course after it is apple it costs three times more
    cigbunt's avatar
    oh Jesus Christ lol

you can really tell you have never owned a macbook

Why are Apple so stingy with RAM and storage? 8GB/256GB is ridiculous. It's a £200 upgrade storage upgrading to 512GB (but still with 8GB RAM) despite 2TB NVMe drives available for ~£100

Also find it funny how people defend 8GB RAM by not even calling RAM - it's 'unified memory.' If Apple have renamed it, it's apparently special (edited)

It’s obvious. The kit they sell does the job people buy it for, and does it well, it’s OS is a joy to use and rarely ever crashes (the kit I’ve had for years have never crashed and it’s all used daily). The are really well put together, hold their value like no other if you decide to sell and trade up, the batteries last longer than most other brand of laptops. I’m not fussed how much RAM or how many gigaflops of space a cheaper PC has, it’s irrelevant, as long as my kit does the job I bought it for and does it well, I’m happy. Which it does. Apple understands this. The fact that I don’t have to use Windows is a bonus too. If a PC user wants to feel superior over us poor sheeple Apple users, I’m happy for you, delighted that you having a good day too. Everyone’s requirements are different.

I love Macbook threads, full of Dunning-Krugers who have prob never used a Macbook and love to compare it to a Windows based machine.

Had a Early 2015 Pro with 8GB Ram, runs perfectly fine today... upgraded to the M2 Air this year and its runs sublime, with just 8GB of Unified Memory.. and I paid less than £900 for it with Very 20% off (edited)

I bought this as a "new" very customer with a 20% code.

It's my first Mac. Only other apple device I've owned previously were iPads. After an unfortunate incident in an Egyptian Taxi I lost my iPad and windows laptop.

I decided to try and combine both iPad and laptop in one as replacement.

For my needs its been perfect. Absolutely amazing battery life, nearly as portable as the iPad it's replaced.

As a windows user I to was worried about only 8gb ram. It's turned out to be no issues for my use. Obviously you are not going to be playing games on this. (edited)

Can the RAM and SSD be upgraded ? Both are way too low for this day and age ...
    PlayChase's avatar
Yes, buy a higher spec model for an upgrade. I don’t think you understand how Apple silicone works, it all comes on one chip - cpu, gpu and memory, if you want an upgrade you buy a different chip not the base model.

Actually this is a crazy price!

This is a cracking deal considering how good this machine is. Just waiting for a 16gb / 512gb in Midnight or Space Grey to come in and I might pick one up...

Yes, I'm in the same boat, or might just get the 256GB version as storage isn't a concern for me or my family's use-case.

The customised configurations aren't on the website anymore, so either some people bought them all overnight or Apple only selling the stock configurations. NVM, they're on there now. (edited)
  15. deleted2844744's avatar
The 8GB RAM I would say OK is a bit low. 16 should be the standard but Apple is being Apple again, but 256 storage is just ridiculous in 2023.
I appreciate the quality of Apple products but I hate when they rip off us and obviously they do it because people still buying it.
    steveieboy1's avatar
So you'd prefer the base model to be £1,649? Base model would be air 13" M1 16gb/512GB.
  16. DingoDirk's avatar
I'm really struggling to get my head around the UK price of the new MacBook Air. It's a straight USD to GBP conversion and then extra on top. Same for other MacBooks.

If people are thinking like I am - out of financial necessity - then the second hand and refurbished prices outside of the Apple Store are going to increase.

Now I think is the time to buy because new stock is prohibitively expensive for many people who a few years ago would have bought a new MacBook.
    PlayChase's avatar
Ours includes VAT, theirs doesn’t include tax. Pretty simple.

Yep, and I did this with my 14" MBP too as well. It's done before tax, so won't be directly 1.7% of the price you pay. I think I got about £34 or £37 for mine.
