I use citric acid for my bean-to-cup, a 1kg bag is about £6 from Amazon and does the same job without all the marketing costs added.
    blahblahblah1234's avatar
    Exactly this.
The essential active ingredient is citric acid for descaling.
There's no need to pay for branding, and nothing in this HG product that makes it work specifically on coffee machines.

anybody used a on a delonghi bean to cup?
    TN567's avatar
Yes, this is absolutely fine, along with using citric acid and water mixture, just fill it to.the line as instructed, the machine can't tell that it's not expensive delonghi descaler lol
  3. Rkp's avatar
Can this be used for kettles? Or too harsh?
    TN567's avatar
Should be fine but again just go with the citric acid, works a treat

I always buy food grade citric acid and use it for all descaling needs. A table spoon full is enough for one descale. 1 kg is approximately £7.50 and it lasts very long time. For coffee machine I make a warm solution and run it through the machine. It takes few post runs to fully rinse.

No need for chemicals like this, just buy a big bag of food grade citric acid (cheap enough on Amazon and will last Months).
It works quicker and is safer. You really don't want to be breathing in the vapour of chemical descalers, especially those with lung conditions.

You can use it multiple times too, e.g. stick a few teaspoons in your kettle with 500ml of water and boil to descale it, let it cool for a while then stick it in your coffe machine/pod machine and run it through.
Obviously rinse the kettle and put water through other machines to clear it, but the worst that will happen if there's any left in is tangy coffee.

Or, straight from the boiled kettle and pour it over your sink taps to get rid of any scale.
Or pour it over your sink draining board to rid it of scale.
    So many uses. (edited)

Is citric acid enough even if you haven't descaled for a long time? I've been using a Sage Barista Pro for 6 months and have never descaled. I've noticed a funny/mouldy smell when making coffee and my wife says the drip tray randomly overflows. I thought of descaling it as a first course of action.

Reading the description on Amazon. Suitable for Gaggia coffee machines. Who came up with that brand name? 😁
    mikeyp's avatar
Achille Gaggia, an Italian barista who in 1938 filed the patent that signalled a revolution in the way the aromas are extracted from coffee.

Sure I seen somebody say they used this on a Tassimo!
    compadre's avatar
I use it on my bean to cup.
  8. Romasato's avatar
I used cider vinegar 1:1 with water mix as I didn't have anything else and it fixed my coffee machine steaming through filter side while frothing milk.
  9. taffyjock1's avatar
Lemon juice and water, never used anything else.
    The.Fat.Cat's avatar
Buy a big bag of citric acid, essentially the same thing, cheaper in the long run and easier to use.
But yeah, would still choose Lemons over chemical descalers. (edited)
  10. Silent_tr's avatar
Just use white vinegar, cheap as hell.
    compadre's avatar
Dont use white vinegar, on anything with rubber it distorts the rubber. Kettles ok, bean to cups not ok.

Is there nothing HG don’t sell cleaning products for?!
  12. pilky1968's avatar
Think I paid Nedpresso over £10 for two small sachets.
Think I'll this for the next time.

    Cheers

About £2 in Home Bargains for 400ml (not 500ml, my mistake) of Kilrock descaler. It is LACTIC Acid (as are the DeLonghi and Nespresso products). I use it in the same dilution as the branded products on my coffee machines. Good stuff, no problems. Not worth risking the more aggressive Citric Acid to save a few pence a year.

Do note that descaling is different to cleaning. Descaling takes the ‘fur’ off the boiler and water pipes (the back end of the machine), but it does precious little about the stale oily coffee residues that build up at the front of the machine!
That stale coffee affects the taste of your product. Try running just water through the machine and compare the taste of what comes out to that of the water going in.
Coffee shops will clean their machines (daily most likely) with Puly Caff or an equivalent. DeLonghi specifically don’t want you to use anything other than water for cleaning their bean to cup machines, BUT for Nespresso machines you can get CaffeNu capsules that do a great job. I run one after each descaling, and it shifts the muck impressively if you follow the instructions (trickier for the auto load Nespresso U models!) (edited)

according HG this is a mix of both Lactic Acid & Citric Acid

Such a poor deal. Use white vinegar.
Does the same job. 509 ml for under 30p in Lidl and does a safer job.
    Helfire13's avatar
Yep. I use 500ml bottles of white vinegar in both kettle and filter coffee maker and it gets them sparkling clean in seconds. Use in a 50/50 ratio with water. Stinks but works so well. Run the unit with plain water a few times after & you don’t get any residual flavour from the vinegar. Cheap & effective.

I use the satchets from home bargains, slam ones or killeock multipurpose descale liquid as both of these are lactic acid only. It tells you not to use citric acid
    The.Fat.Cat's avatar
It tells you not to use citric acid

No idea why not, citric acid causes no harm to machines (unless you use it every day and don't flush it properly).
Some coffee machines even come with sachets of citric acid to use for descaling.
  24. horace's avatar
My Delonghi bean to cup has a dire warning in the manual that use of any descaler other than Delonghi's own (which is lactic acid based) will void the warranty and potentially damage the machine. Of course, the descaler in question is about £12 for enough to do 4 treatments.

Are Delonghi simply talking nonsense to protect their margins (my best guess), or is there some truth in what they say?

    Yep.

can you leave the watertank filter in or need to change same times also?
    The.Fat.Cat's avatar
Take the filter out when cleaning, especially when using chemicals like these. (edited)
