Let Epson invent it, wait for time to pass then copy
My Epson ecotank is amazing, best printer I've ever owned

The HP Smart Tank range has a much better design using a modular cartridge design when it comes to the printing nozzle/head so if it ever cloggs up or there are quality issues you just have to replace the special printing cartridge. With Epson they use a fixed in printing head which if it cloggs up isn't easy to resolve.

I was interested until i saw this

    Please note:

This HP printer is designed to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip or electronic circuit. It uses dynamic security measures to block cartridges that are using non-HP chips or circuits. Periodic firmware updates will maintain the effectiveness of these measure, and block cartridges that previously worked. Reused HP chips and circuits enable the use of reused, remanufactured and refilled cartridges. For more details, see HP's website.

But isn't this a tank printer? I think this might just be a mistake on the listing.
I had a look on youtube and it looks like you just pour whatever ink you want into the tank.

Any ink tank printers decent at photos too?

I have the Epson tank printer and it’s amazing , the ink is not priced expensively think I paid about £7.00 for each one bottle so roughly £28 for the four and it will last the average user years ( epson ink bought from Amazon )….I was like a few others with my old printer ink was dried up every time I went to use it but not any more , these are definitely worth what you pay .

so, 3 years worth of ink but what about the printer heads? I've had no end of issues with Epson inkjets and their printer heads failing/drying out if not used regularly. At least the cheap HP printer cartridges come with printer heads attached.

For low/infrequent use I'd personally recommend a cheap laser or if going for this, buy currys extended warranty, if it dies then they'll swap it for a brand new unit (with another 3 years worth of ink). (edited)

HP Smart Tank printers use two specially designed removable cartridges with the printer heads attached, they have holes in the top of the cartridges which when you slot the cartridges in the tank injects the ink into the cartridges. If the print head goes faulty or clogs on the cartridge you are able to buy replacement cartridges for the printer (I believe cartridge issues are covered during the 3 year warranty on these printers)

Cant speak for this particular model but inkjets in general dry up. The amount of times I need to print at home are few, but inkjet has always let me down.

Buy a laser they just work even if you only print once every 6 months!

I have this machine and the ink is kept in reservoirs with no dry-up.
Also, containers can be refilled using any ink you like and just pour in.

User of Epson Ecotank since Jan, good to see HP doing tank; that said, whilst all printer manufacturers (inc Epson/ HP) are anti-consumer at one point or another (to sell more first party ink / services, etc), HP is on a whole another level.
    theverge.com/202…ity

Given all the HP's recent anti-consumer practice on the inkjet & even laser side (not allowing 3rd party ink/toners), one probably wouldn't give their (HP tank) printer division a single more penny than I have to (not that it'll make any difference).

Will pick Epson Ecotank over this personally (works okay). (edited)

HP have been doing ink tank printers for a few years now and have a much better design than the Epson ecotank. Your Epson Ecotank uses non-removable printer heads which if they clog (and they often do) are a nighmare to try and unblock. HP have a much better design using removable catridges with printerheads on them that get ink injected into them from the tank. It means when their is a printerhead fault on the HP all you have to do is replace the catridge. (edited)

Has anyone got one of these ? Are they any good? Hardly do any printing but every time I do it’s £40+ on cartridges. They must dry out.
    Any help appreciated

I have the 570 version. It has been excellent. Never had to purchase any ink yet in over 2 years and even when I do it will be very cheap to do so. Highly recommended

Ive had one a few years now, excellent. Still on the first cartriges.

    How often do you print?
I print maybe once a month but want something that's going to last "forever" and in colour and have been looking at laser but maybe a tank inkjet could be the one for me.

I've gone for it, TCB doing 10% off HP printers at currys and TCB giftcards comes out around £135 all in
    tadam08's avatar
How do you get 10% off?

I've had a tank printer for 2-3 years now, I'm totally sold on them. I've never had to replace the colour ink and only had to add more black (it came with 2 bottles so still on the 2nd). We don't print loads but easily into 1500+ pages I'd think so far.

    It's an HP 786 model I think.

The ink is still reasonable and you can just print without worry as it lasts SO long. I've also done few photos, they aren't bad.

Wilkos had a tank printer for £100 last weekend
    sc597's avatar
I went for the Wilko deal, got it home only to find it had already been opened and used! I'm not a purist with things needing to be brand new but I wasn't going to take a risk with something as potentially flakey as a printer. Now they're all OOS everywhere. Tempted by this deal or a budget laser as I can print at work so it's just that very odd occasion when it would be good to print something urgent at home - school homework etc.

    Is there a duplex equivelent?

    Scrub that.

The video appears to only shows 3 inks. No true black. (edited)
    Bill.de.Sarce's avatar
There is a large black ink container on the right-hand side of the machine.
  14. Baldy_Dave's avatar
Wouldn't touch HP printers after their firmware locks your printer so you can't use 3rd party ink
    sc597's avatar
I agree. It's a shame as HP's engineering is often pretty good but shady sales tactics are a right put off, same reason I won't use Apple phones. I won't 100% rule out HP kit but it would have to be an outstanding deal to overrule my moral objections I hope these companies are realising the damage their greed is doing to their brands. (edited)

I keep getting the "Maximum Quantity reached" error message when checking out. It shows it is in stock in my local store.

Does that mean its out of stock?
    mad.dog's avatar
Same issue - could be the crappy Currys site or could be OOS

Do a stock searxch first before adding to basket (edited)

I just returned something similar to this because it doesn't do automatic double-sided printing...
I set the whole thing up and was furious to realise that they didn't bother to put that in, and expect muppets like me to sit there pratting about with manually feeding the paper...

is there an equivalent to this printer that does auto 2sided printing?
    jakeyjakey's avatar
Look for ‘ automatic duplex printing’ on product specifications for double sided print capability.

    This clearly says only manual.
