Excuse me for my stupidity... but what is this and what is it used for?
    wjw's avatar
Also, it's useful to clone m.2 drive.
  2. beaversrus's avatar
if you want more than 1 you need to add them all at the same time otherwise the voucher is only usable once

for those that want to add an old nvme drive to this, it may not work
I have an old Samsung SM-951 which is not recognised

    anything newer works perfectly

    hot (edited)

is that not because yours is the older quietpc.com/sam…sds ahci based one

Would an M2 SSD be any good for streaming 4k movies? Plugged into an Nvidia Shield
    dfunked's avatar
It would be massively overkill, but should work just fine.

Does anyone know of a good SSD that you highly recommend to pair with this? (edited)

    Does this overheat?
    Solee's avatar
It will be warm when heavily used. The drive will just slow it's self down to compensate for the heat.

I feel I should buy one but don't know what for and probably won't use it?? :/ :/
    DomDealyo's avatar
They are light enough you can velcro them to your laptop lid and boost the storage. That is my main use anyway.

Can someone please help me with a couple of dumb questions?

I was looking at buying a large capacity usb stick for general external usage, storage and movies on Nvidia Shield. Can I instead buy this enclosure and add an m.2 drive into it?

Also the Nvidia Shield only has USB-A connection, so how would I connect a USB-C storage device to the shield?

50541692-d0Z3f.jpgPlus a samsung evo 870 would be enough for your nvidia shield. They were £50 sold by amazon few weeks back for 1TB.

yooooo i've been waiting for one of these to go on sale. thanks op, heat
    hilari0us's avatar
Yet they've constantly been close to this price for weeks now. Many different model's by many different brands. IMHO the smart amongst will be waiting for prime day in 3 days...

For an m.2 sata card or nvme to create an external hdd
    CoolCab's avatar
yeah, or to be precise an external SSD. they're much much faster than external hard disks obviously but as importantly are MUCH more resistant to physical trauma, better than even the most ruggedized HDD outside of waterproofing or what have you.

People ask if these overheat. Continuous really fast writes would burn out the flash chips if the NVMe doesn't throttle successfully when the temps get too high. The common failure with NVMe is heat death, not flash cell exhaustion (too many writes to a cell)- this type of failure is uncommon, yet is reported constantly online with certain cases and certain flash devices.

Reads do not suffer from this issue. A pro-NVMe drive that can sustain 100s of gigs of high speed writes is going to have high end cooling, and enclosures like this don't come close. Personally I'd research potential NVMe sticks carefully to ensure they temp throttle reliably if a lot of heavy writes are likely.

Talks about heat dissipation while making the entire product black.

does the job. feels a bit cheap. FYI the end slides off, do not mistake the ribbing as a grip to pull the end off!! oops

Work sound these, just bought one for £15 though so yeah ran hot when reinstalling Mac OS but then runs cool when using it. Great item. (edited)

Been wanting one of these for a while but only for occasional use (lid will never be on as it is for extracting data from old NVME drives). Couldn't really justify the full price but this is a bargain so many thanks to the OP as I've now ordered. I've got an Orico USB 3.0 extension hub that attaches to the front of my monitor (all aluminium construction) and it's been fantastic, so much so I bought myself one for work too.

Cracking price. I paid 11.05 for one from AliExpress only 2 months ago.

Which drive would I buy for this? There’s been a few posted recently but am not well versed in the technology.
    daedos's avatar
Go M2 NVME. Stick to 2280 length and Gen 3.0. You won't get any improvement with Gen 4.0 and if you did I'd be concerned with thermals.
  22. slybunda's avatar
Last one i got was nvme only

  28. beaversrus's avatar
The speed results you mention are accurate for usb 5Gbps. Try it again on a different usb port. It may be the same if all your ports are only 5Gbps. If you have a for sure 10Gbps port and it still is @. 500/500 ish and you have tried more than 2 usb C to C or 2 C to A and have got rid of any C to A adapters then it's not looking good for the bridge in the caddy (edited)
