Not a single post about buying from a Shanghai based memory company? When it comes to hard drives, I wouldn't trust anyone other than the main producers. Saving a few quid just isn't worth the risk imho. I remember reading about netac, a similar Chinese brand having significantly more failures than the Korean made drives.

Actually the fanxiang drives are all manufactured by BiWin.
Same goes for Netac, ADATA, Lexar, Integral, and many others. All BiWin.
Biwin also supply HP with the SSD's for all their PC's/laptops, as well as Acer (and again, many others).

They're actually very good drives. Really only cheaper because they are produced on a huge scale with the NAND coming from YMTC and the controllers usually being Maxio (but you do get some with Innogrit or Phison controllers too like the Netac NV7000). (edited)

looking for some recommendations from you knowledgable folk, please

my mobo's m.2 slots are all populated so I tried a couple of PCIe m2 cards that would allow me to have more m.2 drives, but neither worked.

I do not need them to boot, but has anyone found a 2 port or 4 port pcie card that works

Which board and CPU are you using? You may have ran out of pci-e lanes?

Those reviews must be for something else, this isn't a PCIE 4.0 drive. Also the TBW seem low for a TLC 2TB drive.

This one has 1280TBW, it's the 1TB that has 640TBW

Good idea. Hopefully the wait won't be too long. The S770 without a heatsink is currently £76.49.

Are we going to see sub £50 for 2TB, probably

Grabbed this to go with a cheap £5 NVMe USB enclosure from AliExpress. I'm looking to replace 18TB of mechanicals, but it's still a year-or-two away from being ideal, price wise.

In the meantime, this is just the right size to hold my Jackie Chan Blu Ray rips

Unless people know something I've missed, no point getting this drive and putting in USB as you will lose all of the performance.

Is this any good for a ps5
    deleted2921808's avatar
It’s gen3 so sadly not compatible.
  10. Ryan_MasonSla's avatar
Is much/any speed lost if used as an external drive with a housing?
    The.Lone.Ranger's avatar
Via USB? Quite a bit as that will limit speeds to 1,000 Mb if 3.2 or 500 odd if 3.0.

Will this be compatible with motherboard Asus Tuf gaming X570 - Plus AM4 Motherboard I know I have 2 slots 1 for Gen 4 which is above the GPU and the other which is compliance with gen 3 but not super sure (edited)

Your motherboard has 2 x M.2 x4 PCIe Gen 4 & SATA mode. PCIe 4 is forward & backward compatible with Gen3 PCIe, so short answer is yes.
  12. Captain_Le_Chuck's avatar
Any good as the OS drive?
    James_Harking's avatar
    I can't see why not.

Trust in what sense? Reliability or security? - Seems like reliability is your main concern. For any data that's important to you, you should not solely be relying on the reputation of a manufacturer irrespective how good they are - all tech hardware is prone to unexpected failures.

I had similar concerns to yourself, but after a bit of digging on the company and some reviews of the actual product (like this one), I've convinced myself enough that it's worth a punt, for my particular use case. Your mileage may vary.

At the end of the day - it's always a balancing act in deciding what's an acceptable amount of risk. Sometimes you get it right, at other times you learn your lessons and move on.

    Reliability, yes.

You're right, now days we have lots.of cloud based storage that lessens the potential damage of hard drive failures, unlike a decade or two ago when failure would have meant the graveyard. That said, I still believe that buying from the likes of Samsung, micron etc for a few quid extra is worth it. I'd wager that any long term test would show significantly higher failures over time with a Shanghai based company. Whether the data is out there, idk.

I'm not questioning it's performance. It's long term reliability that would be my concern. I'd like to see a youtuber getting a hundred of those drive and writing 500tb on each of them to see how they hold up. It wouldn't happen of course, but it would be interesting.

    £10 price increase now £66.98.

For some people they may have offer for voucher which gives 10% off (Total Price £60.29 so still more expensive)

History shows these at one stage was under £55
