Luton to Amman with Wizzair.
Direct flights with understa bag only.

I suggest you get a Jordan pass for £78 as it covers visa cost.
I also suggest you rent a car and drive when you get there. These cost about £30-40/day.

Where should you park? APCOA Luton airport train station.

Overall, it is not a cheap holiday but it is a one off once in a lifetime trip and I hope the cheap flight helps you towards this goal.

Amman is good for 1/2 days for a bit of history, views and great food. Driving (as soon as you get out of the busy city) is pretty easy so def the best thing to do.

Head down to the dead sea where there are a few resorts from budget to 5*.

    Follow this by Petra.

Then wadi rum and stay in a dome room and enjoy the martian landscape and starry nights.

if you want to end at a beach then finish at Aqaba where there’s also great snorkelling/diving.

All stops just 2-4 hours apart and 1-3 nights each is plenty. Can add hot springs/spa at Ma’in or canyoneering at Wadi Mujib. also plenty nice smaller stops en route to break up journeys.

Can easily make an amazing 1-2 week itinerary.

Oct-Mar Easyjet run flights back from Aqaba to LGW if you don’t want to go back up to Amman. All car hire companies allow return there too. (edited)

This was basically my itinerary, the springs were spiritual

Someone with a modicum of sense, ie, at least one braincell, would avoid wizz air like the plague. It is absolutely not worth it
    Willy_Wonka's avatar
No. It is worth £31 to get 3000 miles away.

    1 pence per mile (edited)

My comment will probably get deleted again as on most of the wizzair deals. AVOID IT LIKE A PLAGUE Absolute joke of an airline, I’m surprised they are still allowed to operate

I was flying with Wizz 39 times so far - no problems at all. It was delayed only once. I will fly with them again in September. If you know their rules, there will be no surprises - same as Ryanair. Most of the time the cost of their tickets was less than a transport to the airport...

How much do the flights normally cost?
    zworlds's avatar

With propa airlines that offer you checked baggage, it's usually around £400!
If you go to Aqaba instead of Amman, you do not have to pay for a visa. Flights are also around £400. (edited)

Went for a week in may. Flew to aqaba then hired a car and drove back to amman. One of the best trips we have done. Happy to answer any questions

I did the same trip but opposite way around, Amman to Aqaba. Wonderful country. I also drove in Amman without any issues, felt similar to driving in Turkey and was fine in the cities.

    Why bother?

Most people bottoms can stand a flight to Jordan for £31.50 & manage a return.

What do you suggest? Business class by Emirates? (edited)

Amazing country full of friendly people. Highly recommend hiring out a car there. Traffic in Amman is at London level, and outside of Amman they have wide roads with not much traffic with abundance of parking.

I would purchase a local sim from the airport and while it doesn’t allow WhatsApp calls it is useful for data for navigating around the country. Approx £30-40.

As suggested grab a rental car and fuel prices are approx. UK early 2000 prices.

In Amman lots of options although there are some okayish hotels near the Gran Husseini Mosque which is near the markets and a little more authentic. Rainbow street which is or used to be touristy is overrated. Food etc is cheap around there - two places worth dropping into, one for hummus and another for Khanefh.

In Petra the Petra Plaza hotel was really good although a short walk or drive to the entrance to Petra. Get there as early as possible so you can get those nice photos and before all the other tourists. Takes an hour or 2 to get to the top.

The drive from Amman it Petra isn’t surprisingly bad.

If you get to Aqaba worth a night or 2 there and perhaps a short hop over to Eilat although depending on your ethno-demographic be prepared for some delays. (edited)

If you're feeling adventurous and travel very light i recommend - Gatwick (Easyjet) Paphos (Ryanair) Amman (Jett Buses) Aqaba (Easyjet) Gatwick staying at least 3 nights in Jordan to make use of Jordan Pass visa waiver. Petra is easy by bus, times for Wadi Rum buses were a little bit sketchy but do it if you can.

Flights on the 4th, 8th and 12th December respectively came to £70 (on Google Flights) but couldn't seem to load a proper image of that. (edited)

I remember asking a few questions about Jordan/Amman on Tripadvisor a few years ago. I did some basic research - and was put off by lack of responses and arrogance from the DEs there. If I knew anything about the place I wouldn't be asking in the first place.

I've been so here are my tips/recommendations :

Petra is a must see, also the ancient city of Jerash.

Mount Nebo where Moses is buried.

Bathing in the river Jordan is also healing for any skin complaints, cured my eczema.
If you do go to River Jordan, ask for the hotels where the locals go for entry otherwise you can pay quite a lot.

Church of the beheading of the John the Baptist is also quite interesting. Jordan is 50:50 Christian/Muslim, so quite liberal compared to other Middle East countries

Temperature reaches up to 45 degree in summer so pack sunscreen and have loadsa water.

Jordan is also quite expensive, so be prepared for that and always be ready to haggle without embarrassment.

Best thing to come out of Luton

It's nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be honestly. Still confused as to why, not worse than any London borough in my experience.

    Would love to go there

Incredible place did a road trip there paying an obscene amount for tickets so if you can do it please do!
    mgk's avatar
Do you mean obscene amount for flights or referring to something else?

Seems more obvious as I've started typing the question (edited)

I went couple of years ago in April and weather was good not too hot. It is expensive over there but worth every penny, book tickets to petra in advance (petra by night is amazing too) also spend a day/night at wadi rum too! Can't wait to back again one day

    Same! ❤️

It was from a deal on here for February 2020, and it snowed

Amman was said to be the most boring Arab capital. however with the influx of Syrian refugees opening restaurants and coffee shop bazaar culture cuisine and vibe has changed immensely

What's the best way to get to Petra and how much does it cost? Would Amman be the best base to go from?
    Don_Mega's avatar
Car hire is really cheap - maybe £30/day. You can drive down from Amman in about three hours (iirc). It's an easy drive, straight down a highway. Ideally you'd overnight in Petra and drive back the twisty route, maybe taking in a couple of the Crusader Castles on the way. Petra's really one of the wonders of the world - I've been twice and would go again. About £50 entrance for tourists, a good couple of hours+ stiff walking to the end, then same back, although you can hire a horse/donkey.

Doubt anyone's still following this thread... Cancelling trips to Jordan now? I'm booked for November, don't feel comfortable now with everything happening, stand to lose a lot of money but will very likely cancel now...
    Sam223's avatar
I wouldn't cancel, unlikely to be affected in Jordan. Get travel insurance now and if the FCO changes travel advice any time up to the date of your travels, your insurer should pay out the loss. (edited)
