What is the range of this car in terms of mileage?
    flyan's avatar
I've had mine since November last year. Summer driving I get 240-270 miles, winter I get about 200-220. It all depends on how I drive. If I hyper mile I can push the KwH. If I drive like a tit then obviously the battery will drain quicker.

I will say the drive is comfortable and very quiet. I gave my Volvo S40 to my parents and have had to borrow it a few times (got the MG ceramic coated etc.) and the noise difference is extremally noticeable.

Its still early days but I'm 99% sure I've never go back to ICE cars. Never had an issue charging and no problems with the car.

And VW are claiming they've got the advantage because of brand heritage. People aren't going to pay 10k more for a lower spec shorter range car you absolute lunatics
    Besford's avatar
Yep. The MG4 trounced the (£52k with options!) facelifted VW ID.3 in the AutoExpress comparison test. A btter car for ~£20k less!

Would never recommend this horrid brand. The Xiaomi of cars, so fit for Uber drivers only! (edited)

Xiaomi make amazing value for money phones that compete with the best Samsung has to offer. So your description reads like a compliment to me!

Not this exact model but I hired an MG EV last year. The build quality was appalling, from the flimsy plastic chargeport cover on the front to the interior. A first gen Nissan Leaf has a better interior and display and charged faster. I highly recommend hiring the car for a day or two to really experience living with it before you part with your cash (edited)
    Dejavu's avatar
Am sure what you are saying doesnt apply to this particular car, I have seen people give up their Leaf for this. Maybe you should take it for a test drive also, you ll be pleasantly surprised.

My car is getting old and I am very tempted to buy EV, but charging it is my main concern as I can only park on road in front of my house (if I am lucky enough). I have never seen EV parked on road and charging.
    blun's avatar
Running an EV without home charging is a little harder and more expensive, but I know lots of people who do it. The key thing is to work out where your regular charging spot would be for topping up once or twice a week. This would need to be somewhere that you normally park e.g.

On-street charger (much better in some areas than others)
    Work car park
Shopping centre / cinema / gym / train station

You should never need to make a special trip to charge, charging is something you do while your car is parked and you're busy doing something else (sleeping, working, shopping etc..)

Had a Merc EQA and hated it as it was a cheaply retrofitted EV design by Mercedes with a hefty price tag.

This on the other hand is built from the ground up and is getting excellent reviews. Looks like a car that you could own for 10 years with cheap motoring if you have a home charger. So hot 🔥 deal for me.

I've had multiple older hybrids and the batteries tend to keep going so shouldn't worry too much about battery age in the future. The RX400h was a massively underrated car - comfy, fast and reliable.
    fishmaster's avatar
A friend of mine (sadly has dementia now) he bought an RX400h, used direct from Lexus somwhere in the Midlands, maybe Coventry, the sound system was glorious the car was awesome, then a farmer friend of his offered him a Range Rover at a giveaway price at the time (£23,000), he bought the Range Rover. After a couple of years I said to him are you selling the Lexus (hoping for a deal for me! ) anyway he said no, the Range Rover is for going out and showing off and the Lexus is for daily driving and he said the Lexus is the better car which he preferred to the Range Rover. He said I am never selling that Lexus it is perfect.

So it must have had the the DVD with Mark Levinson audio system, my friend was very much an Audiophile so he had £20K system in his home. (edited)

Please can you focus on the deal. Not your antiquated views that you're being fed by certain media about evs. Please don't bombard the post with bs about fires, floods etc as actual stats and facts prove other wise.

If you think I'm being harsh on media, please take a look below. The article made out evs are the only cars that can flood if submerged. Simply not true- all cara would. But closer inspection of the car shows it to be a fossil fuel car. Just consider this when you're saying myths aboit evs or better still... stick to the deal itself.

Personally back in 2019 I had a test drive in 10 PHEV (plugin hybrid electric vehicle) cars under a company car scheme that allowed us to test a car for 5 days or a whole weekend, and back then when I chose the Kia Niro PHEV. In that 5 years of ownership I have mainly used the 36 mile electric range 95% of the time I've done the 35,00 miles in this car, with the petrol tank giving me around a further 500 miles in petrol fuel range when required on longer journeys. Average journey for UK folk to work if they drive is around 12 miles each way, easily covered by this Kia Niro PHEV.

When my company car came up for return recently after 4 years, I had the option to buy it for half the RRP at around £17,400 and I snapped it up. You can get these on a 2019 plate for around 19k from dealers and with a 7 year or 100,000 mile warranty I would say its a brilliant and very capable car. No range anxiety whatsover, no worrying about where you can charge it next, and if you do run out of juice, you have a normal petrol tank that automatically kicks in so you don't even realise.

I fill up with petrol once every 4-6 months, or whenever I go on longer journey up North, otherwise almost 95% electric miles of this 35k miles I have driven this lovely car. Round London there are too many 20 and 30mph restrictions and cameras for me to need a faster model 3 Tesla, plus I don't need to queue up for 6 hours at peak times for a Tesla charger on the motorways so I've saved myself the extra 30 grand and that has gone on to save me a lot of money as I haven't spent 30k on extra fuel, nowhere near it!

For 4 years I have been lucky enough to park the car at Tesco while I go to the gym and it was free until October last year, so I had almost 4 years of free electricity, but now I charge mainly at home, as chargers on the road can be very costly, to the point it could be the same as petrol in some places like Shell (44p per kwh at 7kw chargers at Tesco PodPoint now). Octopus Agile tariff at home sometimes has a minus 12p per kwh tariff meaning they pay me to charge my car!

It has lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, heated seats and steering wheel and a fantastic Apple Car Play/Android Auto Infotainment system that you can talk to and it reads out messages etc too. Best car I have ever owned, never let me down once. Get one, as you won't regret it, before everyone else works it out! (edited)
    deleted9453's avatar
I have never had to queue, let alone for 6hrs for a Tesla charger - lol.

As you say the turn off lane assist etc will become as standard the more you become used to the car..in terms of driving a petrol car to driving an EV is there much difference?

Cracking car, I just wish they hadn't used the wrong chemistry in the battery for the long range version! You shouldn't be charging these to 100% which defeats the purpose of getting the long range instead of the standard range model. There is also the issue with fast charging and damage with NMC batteries. If I was to get an MG4, it would be the standard range (LFP battery)... or the bonkers hot hatch x-power version!

    recurrentauto.com/res…100

A frequent question about lithium-ion batteries and EVs is whether or not an owner should occasionally charge their car all the way to 100%, or do a full discharge/recharge cycle. Recurrent and other battery experts generally recommend keeping your state of charge between 80% and 20% for cobalt-based (NCA or NMC) lithium-ion batteries - which is the most common battery used in EVs.

Note that for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, it is OK to charge to 100% every day since the chemistry is more resistant to degradation.
    (edited)
    blun's avatar
It’s fine to charge the NCA batteries to 100 when you need to, just best not to leave them at 100 for a long time.

I just charge my car to 100% before setting off on a long trip, charging to 80% for day to day running around.

I bought one of these a couple of month's ago from New Car Discount. Lovely car and I look forward to driving it every day. No problems with the transaction. I was a little nervous paying full the day before delivery but I paid from a Nationwide account. The building society have a service where they checked out the payee and they took the risk if my money disappeared. The car arrived as promised.

Don't mind my car being built in China, but wouldn't touch a Chinese car company. It is very clear they are using the gadgetry to spy on the world and collect data. It's enshrined in Chinese law which all corporations must comply with - nobody is safe from the communist party's data collection. TikTok didn't accidentally provide continuous mega feeds of user data to the communist government.

Avoid. Wouldn't buy Hwawei, certainly won't be buying a car that has microphones, GPS and data galore about you. (edited)

    newsgroupmonkey's avatar
I'll tell you what's worse, is the borefest that these threads trot out the same tired cliches.

They really need to get their own little forum and sit and tire each other about how rubbish EVs are, how bad they are for the environment, how long they take to charge and other nonsensical rubbish.

I picked up an MG4 Trophy in June on lease. I really like it thus far. Came from a Volvo S90 (also leased and Chinese lol); thought I'd sacrifice some ride etc., but it's actually very smooth and comfortable. I enjoy driving it every day I'm in it. Some owners don't like some of the safety features (in particular LKA) but I've had no issues with it. I miss lumber support, but other than that, it's a lot of car for the price. I home charge, do around 800 miles a month and it costs me less than £20pm to 'fuel' it. My S90 was nearer £130pm. Public charging (will probably never need to) still seems a bit like the wild west in terms of pricing! (edited)

What's the comfort like, internal space and suspension? When I've taken MG Ubers any pot holes or bumps make me believe the word 'suspension' is a dirty word in Mandarin/Cantonese. I ask because at points I will need to transport an infirm parent who has osteoporosis and high pain caused by jolts and bumps. Many thanks for your thoughts.

Audi E-Tron for the money £26K for a used one with 25,000 (nowhere near battery killing mileage)

Just a heads up for those asking about a rear wiper.
I asked the question and had this reply:

"the only rear wiper spec cars we have on the stock car offer are metallic orange . All the other cars dont but they have the tu tone black roof which most people seem to prefer . All are the same price and metallic paint is free . The cars have to be registered and delivered this month for the offer to apply . Hope you like Orange"

So if the refresh model is what you are after then you can only get an orange one from this dealer. (edited)
    CraigFerguson's avatar
That may be the case for that particular dealer i.e., they only have Mk2s in Volcano Orange, but all Mk2s, irrespective of colour, have the rear wiper.
  21. porkchopkid's avatar
How long does the battery last before it starts to noticeably deteriorate? And I wonder what second hand value would be.
    blun's avatar
As long as it’s not badly abused it might deteriorate 10% over 10 years, but then after 20 years it might be a further 5%.

But still, a 20 year old 200 mile EV will still be totally usable with a good second hand value.

When the car is finally end of life the battery is still good for things like home storage, so will still have value to sell for re-purposing. (edited)
  22. Mark_Hickman's avatar
Really like the front and side but they ruined it with that weird flat and wide rear end, however if i can get a deal on a twin motor id be willing to keep my eyes shut every time i walk past the back
The acceleration and power for 36k is crazy good, infact hard to believe, 34.5k and ill take one (edited)
    wonkothesane's avatar
Join one of the official MG owner's clubs for £50 and you get access to MG's "Affinity" scheme which can knock £2-3k off the price of an MG4.
  23. Besford's avatar
Suspect these may be the pre- facelift models from stock? Not a massive difference but the facelift adds rear wash/wipe which it really needs.

Update: Good to see post below from nictry - they ARE the latest models with wash/wipe. BUY! (edited)
    chaymation's avatar
I've heard from them direct, and only the ORANGE one has the new back wiper.

"the only rear wiper spec cars we have on the stock car offer are metallic orange . All the other cars dont but they have the tu tone black roof which most people seem to prefer . Excellent value compared to Tesla.
    paulde2007's avatar
They're different cars. I have an eniro and a model 3.

By comparison the mg as good as it is, doesn't come close to the eniro. Additionally the eniro doesn't come close to the tesla.
  27. kiteless's avatar
Good price, although note that if you need finance then MG's own offers could work out cheaper. Also the £545 metallic colours are just the very boring black pearl or grey - the (better IMO) blue or white are free, the red/orange are tri-coat and cost a bit more.
  28. Manbag's avatar
Props for putting your deal up. Much appreciated. Nothing attracts the "diverse opinions" of hukd like an EV post

You'll not get much better £/mile at the moment. You'd have to be very bold to buy brand new at the moment
    alchemistkevin's avatar

Great deal price with metallic paint included for the best value EV on the market currently ♨️
  30. MrKrabs's avatar
Great price. Even if it blows up in 7 years and becomes worthless, that's just £4k a year.

Would be interested in the tesla bothering xpower model but not for £8k more (edited)
    mutatedllama's avatar
"Just" £4k a year? Interesting perspective. £333 a month to rent one of these doesn't seem particularly good value to me, just "ok".
  31. TylerHalifax's avatar
Probably mentioned already in the thread, but the 77 kWH is hitting UK soon (if not already).
I personally would not be buying an EV with less than 77. Probably higher though, in 5 years. If I were to buy any EV now, it would be MG4 for amazing value.
    CynicalNurse's avatar
    Why?

77kWh = over 300 miles, more than most bladders will do and more than most people drive on all but a handful of days.

With an EV you're paying for the battery capacity and if you almost never use the whole battery you're wasting money. Better to rapid charge occasionally if you need to.

This "you need 500 mile range" is a dumb ICE hangover where you don't have the luxury of leaving home fully fuelled every day.
  32. blun's avatar
Nobody in the thread has mentioned that if you pick the right tariff you can charge this at home for about £5 which is around 2.5p/mile. That’s about 6x cheaper than an efficient petrol/diesel car. (edited)
    jonesm123's avatar
My ioniq is less than £3 to change to 200 miles and with diesel at £7 plus a gallon it means I am doing around 500 miles to the gallon equipment

If these depreciate like other electric cars you'll be able to pick up a low mileage example for about 13k in 3 years time.

Shockingly bad depreciation, and I don't see that figured into anyone's calculations of "savings" when they're talking about electricity tariffs etc...

The 3 year old example is certainly the better "deal" but those can't be posted here... (edited)
    Wadda's avatar
But this model car has only been on sale for about a year. So the chances of getting a three year old one are nil.
  36. VR46Tuff's avatar

  38. jonobailey's avatar
It might be an OK price, but considering the Tesla model 3 has come down in price so much I know which I would choose out of the two, or I would stretch for a used Polestar 2.

Also I wouldn't want to drive in something so horrendously ugly, it's like the equivalent of living in a bungalow with a little pond and gnomes outside

What mileage do you need to do to get a cost saving on the huge purchase price is my question (29 k New versus a 4k USED petrol) I currently drive a 3 cylinder petrol does 50 mpg spend £30 a month on fuel and £20 on tax per year - With this huge outlay required on a new technology EV it saves me what £360 a year if zero charging costs but the payback time is huge - big NO from me, Don't get me wrong but they are well over priced and not fit for the whole market and prices have to fall for anybody not doing high mileage, My previous car was 300bhp and I had a 70 mile commute and I sold that after relocating it made no sense, It maybe boring but get's you from A to B in the same time due to speed limits at a significant cost saving and at a far cheaper price than an new EV
    cbflazaro's avatar
I know when I bought my new ev for 18k and I compared it vs a 3 year old combustion car that the payback would be about 2 years, I was pretty much "better off" within 1 year as its used value was the same of what I paid for it for nearly 3 years., now nearly 5 years later is still worth 12k, saved me 10k+ in fuel.

So technically my brand spanking new ev with extended warranty included was cheaper to me (considering resale value) , than if I was given a free combustion car and just had to fuel it (edited)
