The AMD 3rd Generation Ryzen CPU Lineup

The AMD Ryzen 3rd Gen CPUs feature higher performance gains over its predecessor lineup. With higher speeds, more memory and wider bandwidth the new Ryzen CPUs look to improve on and upgrade the way you relax, work and play. The AMD Ryzen 7 3800X processor includes 8 CPU Cores with 16 threads and a base clock of 3.9GHz that can be boosted to 4.5GHz. The 3rd Gen Ryzen CPU's are backwards compatible with older motherboards thanks to the same AM4 slot socket however with the X570 chipset motherboards you can maximise the power the Ryzen CPUs have to offer. Support for DDR4 Memory continues but with the new Ryzen CPUs comes the new PCIe 4.0 Version which has improved the speeds of which your PCIe components such as graphics cards and some storage solutions communicate with the motherboard. Blur the line between elite gaming performance and workstation-class content creation with the most advanced desktop processors in the world.

The 3000 series zen2 (2000 series were zen1+, go figure) are not doing so hot in AAA games this year. So, for instance, at any resolution you'd get a fraction of your 4090 performance in Starfield using a zen2 CPU.

As a general CPU, or for (much) less demanding gamers, this is good value- maybe. Problem is, after years of stagnation, the CPU wars are red hot. Zen3 was a big leap over zen2, and zen4 is out now, together with vcache versions of zen3 and zen4. Zen5, a massive leap over zen4, is just around the corner.

BTW, as with all AMD CPUs, do not allow the power use figure influence your decision. This is an out-of-the-box metric you can immediately change in the BIOS and/or Ryzen Master. This chip will do 65W or twice that- your choice. Much less power means a bit less performance.

Good points, but it's 80 quid man. Don't think people in that budget range are paring this with a 4090 lol

Any point in getting this for editing photos and video currently running Currently running GIGABYTE GA-AX370 amd 4500 and rx 550 4gb
    32gb ram ?
    komi's avatar
    I would say no
  3. Tej_Singh1's avatar
Would this be something that could be paired with a 3060ti FE? Currently have a ryzen 2600 and looking to get a bump in performance
    fishmaster's avatar
Yes 100%. The overall compute of this CPU is enough difference to be worth it. Single thread isn't massively better but it is still worth the upgrade. Sell the Ryzen 5 2600 for £25 to CEX for voucher or sell it on eBay (which is usually more trouble than it is worth).

    noooooooooooooooo order cancelled

ancient tech at this point, very poor single core compared to modern architecture
    fishmaster's avatar
Post a suitable alternative for £80 then which doesn't mean changing your whole AM4 system. No? Thought so.

Heat, just bought one to replace my little boys 2600 for hist birthday next week.
    Whatwhat's avatar
If he's upgrading from an Atari 2600, he'll see quite the performance boost 😁

Thanks OP. Order in. Had been looking at 2nd hand 3600's for around £50-60.
    Upgrading my 1600 AF.
    Salad_Fingers's avatar
I've got a 1600af too. Wondering if this is worth the upgrade or just holding out a bit longer.

    Oh wow that's mental.

Current CPU I got in my PC that I built back in 2020, pretty dang good I'd argue but for 80 quid?

    My goodness what a steal.
  10. mikefs's avatar
Thanks op, ordered to replace my sons 3100 for his birthday on Tuesday, I swore I wouldn't buy him anything else but £80 and I'll get £25 back on the 3100 (edited)

Good deal this. I still have a 3700X that I’ve paired with the 7800XT and I’m happy with performance at 1440p and even 4K in some titles.
I’ll eventually go to a 7000 series chip when this runs its course but that probably won’t be for another 18 months or so I don’t think.
    UKScottDeals's avatar
4K is less demanding on CPU than 1440p.
  15. plewis00's avatar
Despite being 'an older CPU', this is a bit of a bargain, my friend paid £250 for his back in the day and passed it on to me in exchange for some other hardware I needed and I have never regretted it. Zen 2 was a huge improvement over Zen+ (one of the biggest generational jumps?) and still shines today. Anyone on 1000 or 2000 series would be wise to snap this up for a cheap boost. Bargain!
  16. TehJumpingJawa's avatar
    Good price.
Other options available at similar price with debatable advantages. (5600/12100F)

What's certain is that this puts a real squeeze on the 3600X; what's that worth now? £40? £50?
Certainly not the ~£70+ most retailers are trying to flog them at!
  17. Groindz's avatar
Is this much better than a 5 3600?
    Stonegrasshopper's avatar
For gaming and most home uses there will be little difference.

Must fight the urge to modernise the LGA1155 system I have running for the kids..

    A B550 motherboard for £70, Ram for £30.

    No, must resist!!
    yiako's avatar
Can you share the link for a B550 mobo for 70 quid please?
  19. gobbhudk's avatar
I have the same problem. I could spend £200-£250 in going to a 3600x -> 5600G, using the 1660GT I already have but it's still be a budget 1080p gaming machine, that's on par with a Series S perhaps?
    morty's avatar
Your current 3600x outperforms series S that cpu is close to Series X.

The upgrade you mention makes no sense.

If people have the likes of 3600 or below you want to be looking at 5700 min otherwise no point. you are spending for little gains might as well try to max out that platform.

This 3800x is a good price and is fine for games if paired with other correct parts so it's good deal
  20. Alf.Garnett's avatar
any motherboard recommended looking to build budget build with possibly a 3050 / 3060 casual gaming
  21. stuellis's avatar
My old 3700X did a great job when I was running 144Hz but when I moved to 240Hz it was clearly lacking and I dropped in a 5800X3D. If not needing to push high fps this will do an ok job, but I’d probably just pay the extra for a 5600.
  22. LanB's avatar
They're OEM versions, so don't come in retail packaging.
  23. Fano's avatar
Seems a bit too cheap, misprice surely ?
    jimferno's avatar
They're OEM without a cooler, they also have the 3600 for £69.99.
  24. crack_shot's avatar
Gotta admit, its taking everthing ive got to stop myself buying this

just tell myself, its a 3600.... wait a few months and start a new AM5 build i can build step by step. wont lie though, the only reason i didn't pull the trigger was motherboards are too expensive
    jimferno's avatar
I've had to resist hard but it doesn't make sense to drop £250 on a secondary machine that the kids just use primarily for Roblox, Minecraft & YouTube.

£250 better saved to upgrade my main PC in the distant future.
  25. UKScottDeals's avatar
An i3 12100F at £80 will run rings around one of these in gaming. Perhaps of use for drop in upgrade, it's close to the point where selling the mobo and CPU, keeping the RAM and getting another CPU/mobo could be worth it. (edited)
    fishmaster's avatar
The i3-12100F has much better single core performance, but it is totally lacking in overall compute to a Ryzen 7 3800X, because it is a 4 core / 8 thread CPU whereas the 3800X is an 8 core / 16 thread CPU, so games that can utilise multicore will benefit. Also no one is going to ditch an AM4 system for LGA1700 when they can drop in a 5800X3D (depends on motherboard chipset) and have a CPU that is as good as anything else out there for gaming.
  26. ddaann_99's avatar
This is a lot of CPU for the money. Particularly if you already have a cooler you can use, and an AM4 motherboard, or a plan to obtain one cheaply. Best paired with some 3600mhz memory. Think you could get 16GB for around £30 recently. If you don't already own a cooler and can stretch your budget slightly then I'd probably still opt for the 5700x retail box as you'll get quite an uplift in single core performance and the difference would ultimately be around £40 when cooler taken into consideration.
  27. Toby_SmithmTG's avatar
I have this CPU, I bought used for £100 maybe 2 years ago

I have a 6700xt paired with it, I can run pretty much every game at 1440p above 60fps (minus Starfield)

If that's your target then it's perfect

  35. TehJumpingJawa's avatar
Reminiscent of the cheap(at the time) R7 1800X's from years ago that they sold, dispatched, and then recalled the courier shipments!

Scan don't knowingly sell anything for less than the going rate (edited)
