3 coats on an already white wall/ceiling, shows it's crap. I've found modern emulsion to be a shadow of the quality they used to be. They've watered it down to up the profits. (edited)

You need to get a decent paint and there's loads of options available but they're not cheap.
For ceilings you could try McPherson's Eclipse, Tikkurila AR2, Crown trade extramatt etc

We used this recently - it was crap - too thin , poor coverage

Buy Armstead contract Matt. It's cheap( around £15-20) for 5 litres and is great stuff . You should be prepared to coat a room twice minimum with any paint. Yes I am a decorator....if you can afford Zinsser paints go for that.

Flashes on ceilings so looks rubbish and if you put it on walls then you only need to walk buy it and it gets dirty, no chance of wiping it clean either

Spend extra and get something better

It's a cheap Bobby Basic paint covers ok ish.
A very soft dry chalky finish.
Forgot any bathrooms or kitchen ceiling with this.
Most decorators would tend to go something a little better even in contact grade emulsion like Armstead contact, Johnstones trade , MacPherson trade eclipse etc.

Hmm, pretty thin. But saying that most brands (including durex) are unless your buying the 'bare plaster' paint, which can be £40-50 for one 10l. I normally use this for the water coat on all walls. This took 3 full coats to the ceiling for me. I just got through 4 of these at full price. So thought this is a decent deal.

From comments on here, I got the impression this was one of the better mainstream paints.

It's OK. It's a good price. As long as you expect to put 3 coats on new plaster. It won't cover stains..but to freshen up a ceiling or to use as an undercoat It's fine

Word of warning on this. Don't buy it if your planning to use it as a watered down mist coat on bare plaster. As mentioned in some of the reviews, it has an additive that makes the next layer of paint not adhere to it properly. I found this out the hard way when peeling off masking tape when painting the skirting. Sounds silly I know, and I don't really get it, but it was the case in two rooms for me, and other reviews also stated this.

Other than that, nice white paint for the ceiling which I kept white

when I've been peeling the frog tape off its been pulling the paint off. I assumed it was because the room was cold.

Would be if it was Matt vinyl.

white matt gives a nice enough finish but it does pick up any mould in the air and blacken so have to keep an eye on it, done the whole house in this so will have to bear it...

Don’t know if anyone can help but we have had a room built and on the new plaster wall the decorator is meant to fine mist coat the walls twice. However he has applied by rolling a second coat of the paint today which is mentioned in this post. Does anyone know if there is any difference in fine mist coating or roll painting a new wall. Should I be concerned he has used the paint mentioned in this deal.

Hi, see my comment above. I found that painting on top of this paint (mist coat or not) does not work well. If I was you, I'd try your final paint layer on a small bit that will be behind some furniture. Allow it to dry for a day, then try putting some masking tape on it leaving it for a few hours then peeling off. If it takes the paint off, you've got the same issue I had. Then, I'd recommend using some fine sandpaper to scuff up the walls a bit to give your final layer paint more of a chance to adhere to it.

I'm no expert by the way, and happy to be corrected, but that's what I'd do

Cheers for your reply, we have had issues with the quality of the the material our builders have used compared to what we requested over the last 3 months. Just coincidence the day they are painting the walls I recognised it as same posted on here and then I read the comments.

Recently used this and it was fine. Looks thin when going on but good opacity once dry.

    It's rubbish.

I was given some free Valspar white matt emulsion. This too is like painting water onto a wall. I would normally use Dulux or better. Yes, it's more expensive but painting can be hard work, so why go for something cheap that needs 3 coats and still doesn't look great. The Valspar I have will be used just as an undercoat because I do not like to waste and i'm tight!!!

You don't need three coats because it's cheap. You need three coats because that's the science of painting. You can cut corners but you'll usually have some of the problems people have mentioned in this thread.
