About this deal

This is £115 cheaper than current best UK price. Price of £175 is inclusive of import duty, shipping and £6 for a UK power cable to plug into the brick. This should be more router than most people will need.

I'm going to use 2 as a mesh system but wired together (because of it being a dual band router it is not ideal for wireless backhaul.) Would also be fine for a smaller property used as a single router.

RRP is £340 and current Amazon price is £303.

Has had good reviews and can see some speed tests at different ranges here.

It also has VLAN menu settings for those who need it for their full fibre internet provider.

Also has 2x2.5Gb ethernet ports - not seen this on a router at this price.

What's the difference of this (4g-5g tethering, wifi) with the other one (ethernet)?

They are the same. It is describing one of the features that is in the firmware.

I have it on my Asus XT8 - basically you can connect a mobile phone in tether mode to the USB port and use that as a backup WAN if the broadband line goes down. It didn't work great when we had the floods a couple of weeks ago and our broadband cabinet was down for 2 days.

I bought this last time it was on offer, excellent router, big beast though so check the dimensions before buying

Still not as big and heavy as the GT-AXE16000!

This is a beast of a Router. One of the best out there. The price is good as well.

i'm contemplating ordering this to replace my RT-AX82U (AX5400) as it only has the one 2.5gbps lan slot, despite the wan only being 1gbps! very frustrating when my connection can gather a decent amount of mbps above that 1gbps.

is there anybody with a bit of a better clue on here who thinks it'd make a worthy swap out? will probably use the ax82u to combine with it as a mesh system.

    edit: cheers in advance!! (edited)

I'm swapping out from 2x Asus XT8s which are also limited to a single 2.5Gbps WAN port - by upgrading I'll go from 4 ports (1x2.5G and 3x1G) and go to 6 ports (2x2.5G and 4x1G).

If you have a faster than 1Gbps fibre connection it's a no brainer at this price, unless it's faster than 2.5Gbps and you need the AXE16000 for the 10G ports. Also remember you can keep the RT-AX82U and use it as an AIMesh device, which you can connect via Cat6 to the 2.5G LAN slot (assuming the run is less than 50m). (edited)

Just took delivery of two of these and paid significantly more than this!
As a heads up I found it wouldn't auto-update to the latest BIOS, Which I wanted as it has Guest Network Pro and VLAN within it, I had to update via the webpage

    rog.asus.com/net…os/

Also if you plan to Mesh note as default it reserves some bandwidth for wireless mesh, So if you wired backhaul like I did ensure you set to Ethernet Backhaul Mode in AiMesh > System Settings
(Might even be worthwhile if you use it as a standalone router)

Thanks for the tip. I'd never have found that setting without your post. It's not in the iOS app, but found it in the web settings as you described.

Makes you wonder if the backhaul might work better in some circumstances if using both wired and wireless to send the data?
  6. Filippchris's avatar
So this is better than the ethernet?
I mean tethering is an extra feature?
Because for the ethernet the price stays the same +50%
    Evil_Dan's avatar
    Author
It's just an extra feature - dual WAN with mobile phone tethering via USB - see my comment above.

It is an ethernet router as you would be used to.

What do u mean by a uk power cable..... I can't deal with adapter plugs?
    Evil_Dan's avatar
    Author
    Like this.

From a previous post you just need a C5 cloverleaf power cable (Mickey Mouse appearance end on) with a UK plug. This plugs into the power brick and into the wall socket. No adaptors. (edited)
  8. Danger_Mouse's avatar
It comes with an EU plug, but you can buy just the clover end with a UK plug, this is the one I bought: no adapters needed.

I did change the fuse to a 3A I think it was (maybe a 5A, can't remember without checking)

How long is the thinner cable the other side of the brick into the router, please?

I'll be putting it on a bookshelf about 1m high and the extension socket will be on the floor. Need to work out if the brick will be able to go on the floor or not.

    Thanks.

    Thanks.

Did you ever try the VLAN feature? Hoping to move to Connect Fibre, who use their own fibre network, next year when this will be needed.

Looks like with Openreach the modem handles the VLAN so just need a PPPoE login with Plusnet FTTP.
    Alvie's avatar
Just received mine today an it's working well with my VLAN 911 with PPPoE (an ISP that uses Cityfibre's network)

Just for info the routers I have received use a standard figure of 8 kettle lead. So either it’s been changed or the previous advice was wrong. Luckily I have a few of these at home.

damn I bought some clover ones

Took 40 minutes to unbox and setup the two routers in wired Mesh mode. VLAN is there in the WAN settings when I updated the firmware through the app (needs 3.06xxxx version).

If you want to turn off the flashing white lights on the front it is not intuitive - you need to select AIMesh on the side bar in the Router web app then select whichever device you want to change then click on Management at the right. You'll then see a toggle button for the LED lights. To turn the aura light off the button is just there on the main page. One is sitting on my AV stand below the TV so needed to turn these off.

Update was easy using the Asus Router iOS app. Can't check it fully works yet but looks fairly easy to change. (edited)

On a 50Mbps connection, when I’d just set up the main router, I was able to get 30Mbps at 13m through two brick walls and one timber frame wall.

Love the routers looks (Mainly because I've got a ROG Scar laptop) but not sure I'd see much benefit from it, this was from my Connect Fibre supplied router, tested on my OP Nord 2

This is an excellent wireless router.

As it is a dual band rather than tri band router (tri band will have two 5GHz bands) this will result in reduced bandwidth if using as a mesh on the single 5GHz band as you'd have to allocate some of the wifi bandwidth to the backhaul - wired this would not be an issue. You may be better off with a pair of Asus XT9s as these are triband.

Asus's AIMesh system works really well from my experience of using 2 XT8s. (edited)

Be the last thing I buy form amazon.de if it goes that bad for me as I can't walk far and no transport or close by post office/ depot etc to sort out this potential hassle when ill is no fun either. If I can't get CS support as if I bought from UK then never again and ASUS need a kick up the backside for spouting this grey market unauthorised seller carp as well it's AMAZON, have they not heard of them and no way Amazon should be selling if this is level of support (edited)
    Zerodnil's avatar
Agreed I'm not happy at all about it. Amazon said I couldnt do an exchange, had to return and re-buy, then pointed me to ASUS Germany, but I had to phone them.

They said I need to log it with ASUS uk, add serial to their website and it said warranty expired. I contacted them anyway and they hit out with this Grey Market rubbish.

Forgive the naivety, but I pay for 900mb with BT Fibre. Directly through the line I am getting full speed but using BT Complete WiFi disks I only get 300mbps in my office.

The other issue is that I have a summerhouse that even with the mesh wifi extender gets an extremely weak wifi signal.

Would buying a router like this benefit me in anyway?

Edit: Would buying two help in a mesh style system? (edited)
    Evil_Dan's avatar
    Author
This would work best as a mesh where the devices are wired because it’s only a dual band router and you would have to give up some of the WiFi bandwidth for the backhaul if wireless. (edited)

Thank you for posting this, I've been waiting for a deal on this exact router for a few months, I can finally chuck the crappy Virgin hub into modem only mode.
  29. TerryT's avatar
I've been searching for a router for a while as I use a Virgin Hub 4. I do not care for the 'gaming' branding, but what I do want is:

Wifi 6 for Oculus Quest PC link - is this capable of performance practically as good as using oculus link cable?

Network drives - can I use external HDDs/SSD with this and access over the network at uncompromised speeds? This is a big one for me, I want to be able to stream 4K / HDR media content from a drive to televisions / devices.

Superior Wifi performance - my entire home is covered ok with the Virgin Hub 4, however my car doesn't get Wifi signal at the rear of the house.

So, I'm an 'enthusiast', a 'power user' in most senses. But with this I am on the fence, since my basic needs are covered, but the extra bells and whistles above would be justification for an upgrade to this. I exclusively ran Virgin hubs in modem mode with routers in the past for the sake of reliability and performance, but it introduces another potential point of failure each time the internet goes down. Somehow, and somewhat surprisingly in this day and age, my Virgin Hub 4 seems stable so I'm now oddly reluctant to upset the equilibrium.

It’s Amazon so free returns. Same as if you bought it in the UK.
  30. Bane17's avatar
So I have purchased two of these.

One to put at the fibre point of entry (living room) and the other to go in my office upstairs OR potentially outside in the summerhouse. Connecting these via cable would be a huge job (and not something I'd be looking at right now) so I would be looking to 'mesh' them.

Are there any easy to follow guides on how to do this? Are there any limitations?

My main bug bear is that the current signal in the summerhouse is extremely weak meaning streaming is very temperamental.

EDIT: Also, is the router ONLY beneficial if you are going to plug it directly in to your PC using ethernet? Like I say, my hub is downstairs in the living room, whilst my PC is upstairs. (edited)

Mine arrived, I got it set up and it died after 24 hours. The device is non-responsive and the factory reset won't work. Amazon has said I need to speak to ASUS and ASUS has said they won't support it:

"Upon inspecting the serial number provided, we are regretful to inform you that the device is a Grey Good.
This is when a commodity is traded through the unofficial distribution channel(s), meaning that the goods are sold without the knowledge of the original manufacturer."

Amazon has accepted the return but requires manual postage due to being an international customer and my cheapest quote insured so far is £32.

So if it works it's a good deal, but it's now just cost me money and hassle to return it.

Also pretty disappointed with ASUS as they have an international warranty, so I will likely move brand with them now.

But they are refunding your postage, no? Try UPS - from my experience they offer the best value for these larger items you need to insure.

They have always done for my international Amazon purchases.
