I thought asking strangers on the internet is the default option these days.

we have sky broadband and haven't noticed any problems. may be something to do with your line. you will need to call sky so they can run tests, could be a damaged cable or a faulty router.

I read an article from BT & Sky that they recommended not to power off the router every night as it gets reported as a fault and will lead to slow downs...

"While switching off your WiFi overnight might save you some cash, it can cause problems with your broadband speeds and even make your internet connection easier to hack.

Most of the country’s biggest Internet Service Providers (ISPs), which include BT and Sky, recommend leaving their WiFi equipment on permanently, all year round.

Isn’t that something from the old ADSL days or does it still apply? When I used to have BT internet I remember reading about this as the backend profiles your line to work out the max speed it can drive it at and if you switched the router off it had to start the profiling again from scratch.

In Ye Olde Days with Plusnet., if you had an intermittent speed or connection issue, you could log into your account and run a test. You would get a line test log that Plusnet support could see. I was sorting out this issue for a tenant and went through this process, of submitting the log. For a start, it proved positive that there was a problem as the log showed disconnections and speed issues.

This put the ball firmly in Plusnet's court. Plusnet then commenced the Openreach dance and got nowhere further. This is all ADSL of course where 50 year old wires could be carrying your internet for the last hundreds of yards if not for a mile or two.

But at least there were solid diagnostics available with Plusnet. Surely BT Internet has something similar?

The idea of 50 year old wires on poles for internet is a bit LOL today. I'm growing this tremendous beard waiting for Fibre to the Home to reach my humble abode.

Meanwhile in countries where the political leaders actually care about modernisation...
