Electric Fusebox / Consumer Unit - Cost to fit a new one ?

Just wondering if anyone had any idea of prices for fitting a new electric consumer unit (fusebox in old money!). It would probably be a 10 way board with the following circuits needed....

1 x electric shower (10mm cable), 1 cooker circuit, 1 kitchen socket ring main, 1 rest of house socket ring main, 1 garage socket ring main, 1 lighting circuit, 1 immersion heater circuit

Id be happy to have one of the existing designs with dual rcd protection that have been around for a good few years now

If all the wiring was in place and all the earthing to the kitchen sink and meters was correct does anyone have any thoughts on cost? Thanks.

Had one done in the summer + a outside socket added. Cost £800 at “mates rates” thought it was a bit steep. Every other sparky I knew said it was a good price and I’d struggle to find anything cheaper.

Depends on location. West Midlands £300

In my experience the Sparks I work with generally like to fit boards with RCBOs only, and from memory you're supposed to have space for three additional circuits. Materials +Labour+ Testing+ certificate would be at least £500 plus.

around £450 - £500. the electrician would need to do an Electrical Installation Condition Report as well, which would cost around £100 - £150, as well a new electrical install notification to the council or NICEIC

so i would say you are looking at £600 - £700 total

    Can I ask...

Is the Electrical Installation Condition Report necessary in a private house....its not a rental or anything?

Is the report to the council or NICEIC the certification part?

I must be stuck in a time warp because I was thinking of £500 fitted for a dual rcd board that costs around £80 to buy. Prices seem to have moved on....

I paid around £550 a couple of years ago. Prices have gone up a lot since covid and Brexit, so I think it will more likely £650 - £700 now, if not more.

I just had a full re-wire done, and one of the things sparks advised when we initially just wanted a new consumer unit and a new extractor and light wiring into a bathroom, that the new consumer units were not very tolerant of crappy wiring.

Guess what, we had crappy and in places dangerous wiring, hence needing a full re-wire. So just be aware new board may throw up other issues.

I would say that this isn't true and if the wiring is safe and tests fine then it will also be fine in any consumer unit.

A wire into a MCB or RCBO in a new CU is no different to the same wire in a MCB on an old CU. There is nothing for the CU to be "tolerant" of.

Personally, I had a new CU to go from MCB/RCD set up to RCBO due to lots of DC devices generating earth leakage and tripping one RCD from time to time which became a nuisance.......So effectlively the old CU was not "tolerant" to the devices it was powering but the new one is.....nothing to do with the wiring.
