About this deal
This is £115 cheaper than current best UK price. Price of £175 is inclusive of import duty, shipping and £6 for a UK power cable to plug into the brick. This should be more router than most people will need.
I'm going to use 2 as a mesh system but wired together (because of it being a dual band router it is not ideal for wireless backhaul.) Would also be fine for a smaller property used as a single router.
RRP is £340 and current Amazon price is £303.
Has had good reviews and can see some speed tests at different ranges here.
It also has VLAN menu settings for those who need it for their full fibre internet provider.
Also has 2x2.5Gb ethernet ports - not seen this on a router at this price.

sorted byI have it on my Asus XT8 - basically you can connect a mobile phone in tether mode to the USB port and use that as a backup WAN if the broadband line goes down. It didn't work great when we had the floods a couple of weeks ago and our broadband cabinet was down for 2 days.
is there anybody with a bit of a better clue on here who thinks it'd make a worthy swap out? will probably use the ax82u to combine with it as a mesh system.
edit: cheers in advance!! (edited)
If you have a faster than 1Gbps fibre connection it's a no brainer at this price, unless it's faster than 2.5Gbps and you need the AXE16000 for the 10G ports. Also remember you can keep the RT-AX82U and use it as an AIMesh device, which you can connect via Cat6 to the 2.5G LAN slot (assuming the run is less than 50m). (edited)
As a heads up I found it wouldn't auto-update to the latest BIOS, Which I wanted as it has Guest Network Pro and VLAN within it, I had to update via the webpage

Also if you plan to Mesh note as default it reserves some bandwidth for wireless mesh, So if you wired backhaul like I did ensure you set to Ethernet Backhaul Mode in AiMesh > System Settings
(Might even be worthwhile if you use it as a standalone router)
Makes you wonder if the backhaul might work better in some circumstances if using both wired and wireless to send the data?
I mean tethering is an extra feature?
Because for the ethernet the price stays the same +50%
It is an ethernet router as you would be used to.
From a previous post you just need a C5 cloverleaf power cable (Mickey Mouse appearance end on) with a UK plug. This plugs into the power brick and into the wall socket. No adaptors. (edited)
I did change the fuse to a 3A I think it was (maybe a 5A, can't remember without checking)

I'll be putting it on a bookshelf about 1m high and the extension socket will be on the floor. Need to work out if the brick will be able to go on the floor or not.
Thanks.
Did you ever try the VLAN feature? Hoping to move to Connect Fibre, who use their own fibre network, next year when this will be needed.
Looks like with Openreach the modem handles the VLAN so just need a PPPoE login with Plusnet FTTP.
If you want to turn off the flashing white lights on the front it is not intuitive - you need to select AIMesh on the side bar in the Router web app then select whichever device you want to change then click on Management at the right. You'll then see a toggle button for the LED lights. To turn the aura light off the button is just there on the main page. One is sitting on my AV stand below the TV so needed to turn these off.

This is on WiFi with this router, approx 8ft away on a Samsung Tab S8+ (edited)
As it is a dual band rather than tri band router (tri band will have two 5GHz bands) this will result in reduced bandwidth if using as a mesh on the single 5GHz band as you'd have to allocate some of the wifi bandwidth to the backhaul - wired this would not be an issue. You may be better off with a pair of Asus XT9s as these are triband.
Asus's AIMesh system works really well from my experience of using 2 XT8s. (edited)
They said I need to log it with ASUS uk, add serial to their website and it said warranty expired. I contacted them anyway and they hit out with this Grey Market rubbish.
The other issue is that I have a summerhouse that even with the mesh wifi extender gets an extremely weak wifi signal.
Would buying a router like this benefit me in anyway?
Edit: Would buying two help in a mesh style system? (edited)
Wifi 6 for Oculus Quest PC link - is this capable of performance practically as good as using oculus link cable?
Network drives - can I use external HDDs/SSD with this and access over the network at uncompromised speeds? This is a big one for me, I want to be able to stream 4K / HDR media content from a drive to televisions / devices.
Superior Wifi performance - my entire home is covered ok with the Virgin Hub 4, however my car doesn't get Wifi signal at the rear of the house.
So, I'm an 'enthusiast', a 'power user' in most senses. But with this I am on the fence, since my basic needs are covered, but the extra bells and whistles above would be justification for an upgrade to this. I exclusively ran Virgin hubs in modem mode with routers in the past for the sake of reliability and performance, but it introduces another potential point of failure each time the internet goes down. Somehow, and somewhat surprisingly in this day and age, my Virgin Hub 4 seems stable so I'm now oddly reluctant to upset the equilibrium.
One to put at the fibre point of entry (living room) and the other to go in my office upstairs OR potentially outside in the summerhouse. Connecting these via cable would be a huge job (and not something I'd be looking at right now) so I would be looking to 'mesh' them.
Are there any easy to follow guides on how to do this? Are there any limitations?
My main bug bear is that the current signal in the summerhouse is extremely weak meaning streaming is very temperamental.
EDIT: Also, is the router ONLY beneficial if you are going to plug it directly in to your PC using ethernet? Like I say, my hub is downstairs in the living room, whilst my PC is upstairs. (edited)
This looks like a lot of router for the money, well future proofed
Ordered on 7 November (edited)
Did anyone else have this issue?
for 2 years now.
Stupid really from companies. (edited)
I.e should I be using custom DNS?
Should I be using 160 mhz
Using wireguard etc... (edited)
"Upon inspecting the serial number provided, we are regretful to inform you that the device is a Grey Good.

Amazon has accepted the return but requires manual postage due to being an international customer and my cheapest quote insured so far is £32.
So if it works it's a good deal, but it's now just cost me money and hassle to return it.
Also pretty disappointed with ASUS as they have an international warranty, so I will likely move brand with them now.
They have always done for my international Amazon purchases.
But they are refunding your postage, no? Try UPS - from my experience they offer the best value for these larger items you need to insure.
