Which eReader

I have a large amount of pdf ebooks that I would like to read. I struggle to view them on my phone so thinking an eReader would be a good idea.

Fully appreciate that there are many readers available such as Kindle, Kobo and Nook. To be honest I started reviewing them online and gave up as there are so many!

So thought I'd ask on here what people recommend?

I'm happy to source an eReader second hand if there are any discontinued models recommended. Ideally want to keep costs down and if I end up using it a lot I can always upgrade later on.

Thanks

Kindle if you are happy tied with the Amazon ecosystem. Kobo for a more open, multi file format environment. Kindle can read pdf and txt files though.

PDF is a poor format for digital reading because of the fixed sized layout. Sometimes the text can be pulled out of them and displayed in a way that's readable at different screen sizes but many only really work when displayed at the size they were designed for.

In short, if it's not working well on your phone then an eReader may not be much of an improvement - the slightly larger screen being ofset by the screen being slower to respond, so panning and scrolling around the pages is more of a pain.

If the files are from small paperbacks then maybe, but if you're trying to read stuff designed to be printed at A4 or large hardback then you're better off with a large tablet, or maybe a portable monitor for your phone.

It's worth checking to see how many of the books are available in better formats like ePub.
