Stopped by a police dog while out shopping with my kids

Need some advice here , today I went to 4 yrs old birthday Party at a restaurant, on the way home me and the wife and two young children 10 and 13 walked back through the town centre .

This is where it gets embarrassing, a police drug dog started walking next to me , next thing I was detained under the drugs act !

Wow I was gob smacked , in front of my kids and wife in the middle of a busy shopping centre . I was hand search for a bout ten minutes!

Obviously found absolutely nothing as I told them I’m out with my family on a day out .

The search made me go over my car park ticket and miss my asda shopping it took that long .
Made to give all my details .

So annoyed with the police as another officer told my wife and kids there searching for drugs .

After my kids was asking me if I had drugs or take drugs I’m fuming .

Rather than getting upset about the police detaining you briefly for something the drug dog was alerted to on your person, instead use it as a learning opportunity for your kids. Explain what the police dogs do, how they are amazing, clever animals etc and how they help the police keep the public safe etc. You can’t reverse what happened so best to make the most out of it.

Are you sure HUKD is the best place for such well thought out and positive suggestions?

I'm sure most just want to know how much they can claim as compensation!

I don't get the point of the post.

It certainly appears that you have unwittingly picked up the scent of drugs at some point in your journey over the last 24 hours.

The police were doing their job - you were a little inconvenienced and somewhat embarrassed by the search. Me personally - I would have laughed it off and enjoyed telling the story - doesn't happen every day. I'm assuming they were professional throughout.

Your posting this because of what?

Would it not be better spent catching real criminals and not people out with there kids for the day off from work (edited)

No, you are not entitled to anything.

You’re entitled to a receipt for the stop search detailing the reasons behind it and legislation used such as s23 misuse drugs act.

You don’t have to give any details if nothing is found.

Not sure what you want advice for?

Did they give you a reason for stopping you? EG I am stopping you to search you because you stink of cannabis or stopping you because you match the description of? If they did then there is nothing you can do that will benefit you in any way.

Did you get a parking ticket? Did that 10 minutes really stop you doing your shopping?

If you got a parking ticket then tell the issuer you were detained by the police & it should get cancelled. If not then get it in writing from the police & it should get cancelled.

Having a wife & kids with you has no relevence. If it did then criminals would just walk around with their wives & kids doing whatever they wanted. (edited)

Despite what you make think of law enforcers, and the attitude that unfortunately often is worn with the uniform, it was the dog that was triggered. It would not have had a bias. You smelt of something it was trained to deal with. The officer reacted to the dog.
Regarding the question of should they have ignored you and gone off to catch "real criminals". The carrying of drugs is something that many criminals do, and it is often backed with a weapon. Now what you you have thought if they ignored that person as well?
You had the experience, and it sucked. Unless you felt targeted and discriminated against, then accept that the job was being done properly by the person that you pay your taxes for so that they could protect society.

Bit of random post for a deals website if I'm totally honest.

What advise are you looking for? The police were doing their job, a dog walked past you a picked up a scent so the police investigated. What would you expect the police to say to your wife and kids, they told them what they were searching for.

I doubt the Police will refund you for missed your parking or shopping.

Not sure all these reasonable and helpful answers is what the OP was hoping for. Doesn't appear to agree with them.

Nope haha thought I could rely on the hot deal gang to come up with better stuff than this Jesus . Must have family in the police and probably agree with stopping motorists on the way to work on the stop checks they do now and fining people for a bald tyre

All the auditors use H&K solicitors.
    Give them a call.
Did you or your wife think to record the incident.

Complain8ng via iopc is pointless unfortunately. Raise a civil claim against the police via a no win no fee solicitor

Well done to the dog, it's doing it's job. Clearly there was a scent on you and they are justified in stopping you. I accept it's not ideal in front of your kids but that can't stop the Police doing what they need to do.

Maybe have a word with the restaurant and get them to clean the seat you were sitting on as clearly a prior occupant had something in their back pocket!

Just reading they must provide a written reason afterwards I wasn’t given anything not even an apology just told to leave

Afterwards, the officer must give you a written record of the search, which should include: the date, time and place of the stop and search, the officer’s details, the reason for the stop and search, the outcome, and your description if you refused to provide your personal details. Make sure you keep your copy of the record in case you want to make a complaint.
