Alexa devices planned development obsolescence.

Is it me or all things Alexa are quietly ushered to " I hope you don't buy them anymore as we are bleeding money because we are selling them below cost and we hoped you used them to voice order and billionaire us".

I never knew that technology can get dummer as with the Alexas devices (before you say it, I own almost all the models and flavours and I know what I am doing).

For example I found myself insulting the Alexa culprit more and more because he/she is not getting my commands anymore (it was fine when they were very expensive).

Conspiracy cap on:
Amazon can't just shut them down, they will be pitch forks on Blue Origin lunch pad, so a smart (also evil ) way to do it is to dumb them down until they get a bad fame and no one will buy them anymore and they will slip in to obscurity with no public backlash to the mighty Zon.

That's why I would do it if I was a pirate and wanted to convince the plebs that "we tried but it didn't work out" or "is not you it's me " without the huge public backlash, hell I probably own more that a few of these so I will threaten limb and life if Amazon kills the line.

I am already a victim of the above as a 1st Gen Echo (one of two) I own is unable to register to my account no matter what I do. The first one is registered (done a while ago) and working but probably will not do it again if I deregister it.

Side by site trial: two bedroom clocks both by Lenovo, one with Alexa the other one with Google Assistant, in controlling the same light, Google is snappier than a viper in getting the commands, Alexa on the other hand is dumber than toast.
I use Alexa first and then when it fails (and it does most of the time), for a sure result I fire shot Google.

I wish I invested in the Google environment devices first, they seem to be much better (I only have three of them against nine Alexas).

Google phone assistant still works on an Android phone without any interaction whilst Alexa only works if the app is on and fired up.

And no, don't TLDR me, you better not, read this pamphlet, it definitely affects you, you telling me you don't own any Alexa devices, right?

You probably have more than all your light bulbs in the house

Yes, obsolescence makes perfect sense for the vultures at Amazon.

Also, tldr. No, I don't own any Alexa devices. I was given one once and sold it without even removing the plastic around the sealed box. They're a ludicrous bit of corporation worship and I'm delighted they're dying a death.

Good to hear I am not the only one suffering from Alexa "dumb down". There is a slight yet noticable delay with Alexa commands and also a requirement to repeat them a few times before they are performed. (compared to a few years ago when everything was snappier and didn't need repeated!)
I guess they are trying to get rid as the overheads must be huge! By default every command to Alexa is recorded and stored in your account history - imaging the amount of data that consumes - and it needs a backup too!

Standard big tech business model. Sell hardware or services below cost to attract large user base then try to find ways to extract cash from that user base.

Trouble with digital assistants seems that it’s hard to sell anything through them that people want. There’s always paid ads or a subscription model but can’t imagine that would be warmly welcomed - I’d stop using mine for sure.

Alexa and other such things will likely remain loss leaders by design. Their main value is gathering data which can be used in myriad ways, including train LL models. So while advanced software development may be tapered down for actually using Alexa as a personal assistant device, the hardware will continue.

    TLDR

In all honesty though a lot of my home automation runs via Alexa, from voice control of lights and devices to Ring and Hive integration with Alexa. I have rooms that power lights and devices on\off as you enter and leave using Ring alarm motion sensors, it's all instant.
All still works perfectly just as it did from new, maybe you could try retraining your voice with Alexa or removing unused Alexa Skills?

Not just Alexa, I really regret buying into Ring security and doorbell rather than something self hosted.
