Has anyone used portable wifi abroad - Is the signal strong enough to use with a laptop?

I want to go to my villa in portugal for a couple months in the summer but there is no wifi there . So i found this company portugalinternet.com/ren…fi/ where you can rent wifi for as long as you need it. I want to use my laptop and work from 'home' there but im curious to know if the signal would likely be strong enough. Has anyone used a similar product. Is the speed fast?

As long as you can get a signal you could just teather to your phone or use a hotspot. No need to spend extra "renting" wifi! With a Lebara SIM (up to 30GB of data on the Unlimited plan) you can roam for no extra charge.

The only way to truly answer this question is for you to try it yourself. To many variables involved, that only you can answer.

The speed will be as fast as the mobile network at your given location, don't be fooled into thinking you are getting some portable access to a fixed line WiFi connection, its just a Mobile Data Sim in a portable router...........

They just supply you with a Mobile Router with an unlimited data Sim card.

You could just as easily pick up a cheap 30 day unlimited data sim locally and pop in your own purchased portable router, or even in your phone if you have a dual sim phone and turn on the Wifi hotspot. (edited)

But it wouldn't be the same speed? It would still work out cheaper than a 4g plan.

What a great little scam that is, charging extortionate daily rates for a service anybody could get for a fraction of the cost without even needing any new hardware.

Why dont you see if you can double check the signal strength/which networks are available at the villa first as has suggested?

You mention its 'Your villa' so do you mean you own it or its your chosen villa for your short stay only?

If its your permanent villa that youre repeatedly return to it may warrant a different solution?
