bicarbonate of soda for cleaning washing machine

has anyone tried this and does it actually work. Most washing machine cleaner is £2-3 a pop where as bi carb is 65p. Don't want to waste time if it don't work.

I use citric acid every 6 months in my dishwasher, washing machine and kettle. Works a treat and costs about 20p per large appliances and 10p per kettle

I also use distilled vinegar instead of rinse aid as far far cheaper

Hi how much do you use for the washing machine, and do you put it in the drawer where you would usually put washing powder?

The best thing to use is soda crystals and distilled vinegar, soda crystals used to be cheap but now less than £2. You only need a cup full. Bicarb would work but no idea how much you will need.

    Best thing IMO.
Hottest wash with NO Spin and just a dishwasher tablet.

I use washing powder straight into the drum on the machine's Autoclean cycle. Works the same as Dr Beckmann's washing machine cleaner in my opinion. (edited)

Washing powder will just clean the pipes but do nothing to any internal limescale

Guess you must live in a softwater area

Sodium Bicarbonate is a bit too mild to do a really good job of cleaning a washing machine.

I use Anhydrous Citric Acid on the hottest wash cycle to clean and descale my washing machine (we have very hard water here) It is cheap if you buy 1KG+ bags from places on ebay, or Amazon. Works on kettles and dishwashers too.

Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate) would be another option just to clean it, it is a bit more caustic than bicarb.

Doing an occasional hot wash (60°C or hotter) using a washing powder containing oxygen bleach with a load of whites/light colour cotton towels and sheets or whatever is also a fairly effective way of cleaning it while getting a wash done at the same time. The oxygen bleach kills mould and bacteria and the extra heat helps to dissolve any build up of liquid detergent, fabric conditioner and grease in the machine as well. (edited)
