Laptop advice - used/refurbished or go for new?

Hi All,

I would like some advice please. I posted a discussion 3 years ago (hotukdeals.com/dis…713) but it's time to replace this especially considering the screen fault and battery issues. Not worth fixing given the quote I received from a local shop so would rather buy a used/refurbished or a new laptop.

My laptop is 7 years old. It's an Acer Aspire ES 15 ES1-572-33TU i3-7100U (2.4GHz) with Intel HD graphics 620, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD.

I'd like the replacement laptop to be as capable as this has been with similar specs so minimum i3, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. I would prefer a 15.6" laptop but wouldn't mind a 14" laptop. Thin bezels would be good but not a deal-breaker. I only use my laptop for office work (word and excel etc), checking emails, internet browsing, YouTube, streaming and listening to my music files. There are no intensive/demanding applications nor games.

I will never be buying Lenovo/HP products due to my past experiences so would prefer to go with Acer/Asus/Dell/Samsung. I would also prefer to buy from eBay or Argos as I have nectar points that I would like to use and I would say budget is no more than £225 as it seems like there are quite a few being sold by newandusedlaptops4u from what I've seen on their eBay store.

Shall I get a used/refurbished laptop within my budget or go for a new one for a similar price between £350-£400 the same way I purchased my current laptop back in May 2017? Would love to get a Zenbook or Galaxy Book but both probably overkill given my usage/needs. I had a look on different websites such as laptopsdirect etc but would be grateful for any particular recommendations given my needs/usage.

Thank you in advance for all helpful tips/recommendations.

I can only share my personal experience with my mother who didn't agree with a chromebook.

I got her a dell 5480 and put windows 10 Ltsc IoT on it which is supported until 2032.

Great laptop, used on a dock all it's life. No cosmetic damage, no keyboard use signs.

It also fitted the specs you wanted.

This is a golden age for refurbs if you don't mind using Linux and / or Windows 10 Ltsc IoT as tonnes of machines don't support Windows 11 because of Microsoft's ruling.

If you want to save a good chunk of cash and have a very capable laptop it's well worth the sacrifices. Windows 11 is terrible anyway.

This is not longer in stock but serves as a great example:

Thank you for the suggestion. The laptop on Morgan Computers looks decent enough even though it's out of stock.

I did think of possibly getting a Chromebook but decided against it in the end.

Also, I had to Google Windows 10 Ltsc IoT as I'd never heard of it. While I can comfortably work my way around installing apks on my phone, I wouldn't know where to begin with installing this on a laptop. If there was an easy guide detailing each step in a simple how to then maybe I could do it. Guessing it's something like this?

Personally, probably would prefer something all ready without having to install anything myself.

    Lenovo Thinkpad T14 G1/i5-10210U/8GB Ram/256GB SSD/14"/W10/B £220

Search on ebay to check if you can find something similar. (edited)

Thank you for the suggestions but as I said I will never be buying Lenovo/HP products ever again because of the experiences I've had with their products/service.

I'll have a look again later and share some links to see what everyone thinks.

Found 2 but links/comment got removed. Had a look at suggestion made by wonger73 but their laptops didn't appeal. 2 I found that I'm looking at are Dell Latitude 5420 i5-1145G7 16GB 256GB £220 not including postage and the other is Acer Aspire 5 A515-56G i3-1115G4 8GB 256GB on auction.

Chromebook all day long with your budget and requirements.

Cheaper, more responsive, longer battery life, less hassle, more secure. For your budget you'll get a mid range Chromebook which will easily outperform any similar priced Windows machine. (edited)
