Is baking soda a good way to clean the carpet?

So my roommate has read that using baking soda on the carpet and thenvacuuming it off is a possible way to clean the carpet and boughtsome extra baking soda for that. I want to check if this would work, would a normal vacuum be able to deal with the baking soda (we have abagless one)? Also, is it easier to deal with the baking soda byadding in citric acid solution or vinegar?

Covering your carpet in baking soda will do one of three things and cleaning isn't one of them. It may remove some odours, some moisture but what it will do is clog up knacker your vacuum when you go to suck it all up. It's really only used as a home remedy for spills that smell such as urine, vomit etc and even then it's not that effective. If you want to clean a carpet you need to use a machine to extract the dirt that's the only way.

Is the go-to-guy for these types of questions and may be able to advise if he has time.

People use baking soda on carpets or beds, your supposed to leave it on for half an hour or an hour then hoover. Yeah any hoover will be fine to clean it up as its only powder.
You only need vinegar if you've got mould. I clean cars and had quite a few horror story's over the years of me opening a door to mould. And it stinks for a while even when really watered down (edited)

Worked well on a mattress to remove smells

Mixing acid (vinegar) with alkaline (baking soda) produces bubbles and salt and neutralises both original compounds. How this translates to cleaning seems to entirely divide the internet, but the more science leaning articles I've read say its a waste.

Baking soda, with salt, is often used as a home remedy for ridding the carpet of fleas. Whilst not doubting if it works, I think that it is because you want to spend more time and effort vacuuming up the powder, that the inevitable result is more pick of eggs and larvae than a normal vacuuming would lift.
Sort of like the Magic Soup Stone.
