I took all that time and effort trying to help and to make it CLEAR to potential buyers looking for a decent CPU upgrade.

I feel sorry for the OP to be honest...I only helped because I have good knowledge of PC hardware

Look back at my posts and you'll see that I did mention that this CPU is AM2 only NOT Socket 939 and that they've probably cut and pasted the generic marketing info from somewhere without even reading it first. Btw I have the same motherboard as you - again the fastest processor this can support is a Socket 939 AMD Athlon X2 4800 which is now discontinued....and only available on eBay for a small fortune.

We need to know what motherboard you have, so we can determine the socket, most likely Socket 939 or AM2. You can download CPU-Z, and if you take a screenshot of it running, we will be able to see the socket type.

If it fits, you would also need new thermal paste and maybe a new cooler.

I always buy retail CPUs as a three year warranty and heatsink / fan are a small price to pay...however CPUs are very reliable today and most people buying these would probably buy their own cooling solution anyway.

I will point out that this processor uses alot more power than an Intel Core 2 Duo equivalent (Athlon X2 6000 - 125W / C2D E6750 - 65W)...its not as efficient. Please no AMD vs Intel wars ;-)

A good price especially for people on low end Athlon X2s (3800/4200/4400) on Socket AM2 motherboards wanting a decent upgrade. As already mentioned this is not for Socket 939 motherboards. I do not know if lowestonweb have a good reputation mind.


Hixxy22 - if your motherboard is AM2 then please make sure that your motherboard can support it (should do). Usually some motherboards need a BIOS update to recognise a newer CPU (especially if released months after the board came out). This is more of an issue with motherboards with Intel processors however.

I would recommend finding the motherboard manufactuer (e.g. Asus/Gigagyte) and model number of your board, then going to thier official site and checking CPU support list.

Also there was an X2 3800 released for Socket 939 and then Socket 940...as suggested download and run CPU-Z

The fastest processor for Socket 939 was the AMD Athlon X2 4800 which is now retired - it still sells on eBay for a small fortune. There is a mistake in their listing which I assume they have cut and paste from somewhere. The 6000 is AM2 only

If ur 939 go Opteron Dual Core! They are server processors soooo higher quality silicon for high rate up time which means less power requirements and therefore Overclocking potential is high! 1.8ghz Opterons have been seen running at the 3.0ghz mark on air! With Water ur looking at more! AND ther cheap as well chips now too!

no. it's oem. you wouldn't want to use them anyhow -much noisier and not as efficient as spending an extra £10-£20 on a good fan.


was tempted to get the 6000 x2 but decided i'm not buying a new am2 cpu until there's a marked change in power consumption. all my adobe creative suite 3 programs run flawlessly anyway and that's with a 3500 (not dual core) and 4gb ram on vista ultimate!

Asus M2N-E SLI. Wouls this make a lot of difference -or would i be better adding more ram . Running Vista home premium.

I personally havn't used that one, but it looks pretty good, coolermaster stuff is usually pretty good quality...

The Coolermaster Hyper TX cooler performs on a par with the Arctic heatsink and is slightly quieter so I would go for the Coolermaster especially at that price, but be aware that these heatsinks are pretty big so make sure you have enough clearance in your case.

Woow, 65 watts more electricity, this means £30 electric bill a year if used 12 hrs per day.
However in the winter months we needed the heat anyway to keep warm so say £10 of the £30 is used to offset the gar bill!
