As a public service announcement it's possible to limit the 5800x down to 5700x thermals by limiting tdp usage etc. It's better silicon. The main factor should be price difference and use case.

I have a 2700x, 32gb Ram and a GTX 1660ti and am looking for upgrade advice. Is it worth upgrading and prolonging the AM4 that I bought in to a while ago now or should I look at AM5 and even start exploring a new GFX too?

Depends on what you want to do with the PC. If productivity - what apps? If gaming - what resolution do you play at and what is your target FPS + what games?

AM5 can be an expensive choice. But if you have a decent AM4 board then investigate the cost of an AM4 CPU upgrade and video card choice if budget is limited. There is still plenty of life left in AM4.

Another vote for the 5700X, it uses so much less power & 1/3rd of heat!

    I'd only consider 5600x on a budget, 5700x mid-range or 5900x for mutlitasking or a 5800X3D for gaming high-end if AM4. (edited)

Not even close. Even though the TDP of the 5800X is somewhat higher (105W vs 65W) the actual power consumption is much closer. Under single core stress tests and typical multi-core gaming loads the difference is negligible, under all-core stress testing the 5800X consumes about 30W more than the 5700X. (edited)

It's not been much cheaper than this... IMHO it's worth going for the 5800x vs 5600x at this price point (provided you have adequate cooling) ...most will disagree, however (edited)

I only disagree with you using "vs".
Had to re-read your comment a couple of times.

Helps avoid that old sock smell

Decent price. I opted for the 5700X as it was cheaper, uses less energy and is only a tiny amount slower that the 5800X.

How much of an upgrade from Ryzen 7 3700x is this, do you think? Worth the time ? (edited)

Pointless really 3700x will even support a 3090 with little bottleneck

For price, I dont see it getting any cheaper than this.
